You know, I'm wondering about that too. Kasi nung nag-cough and fever baby ko, dinala ko sa pedia,
he gave my baby the PPD/PPT (not sure which is right), and it came out positive daw.
So he made us get chest X-ray for confirmation,
And it came out just bronchitis.
So I think maybe the BCG does influence the PPT result. I wish somebody could tell us for sure.
p.s. I later found out that the proper procedure for suspected primary complex would be X-ray first, then lab test for confirmation if the x-ray finds something. I never went back to that pedia again.
I'm asking kasi when I had my PPD (skin) test here (for work purposes), it turned out positive. Syempre kinabahan ako. Then I was asked if I wanted to take the TB meds which needed to be taken for 6 months and could have possible side effects of liver damage. Since I was fairly positive naman that I didn't have TB, I declined but they required me to get an x-ray which, thankfully, was negative. And THEN, saka lang nila ako tinanong if I had had the shots for TB and they said that's what probably caused the false positive.
Also, about that BCG vax, kasi since uuwi kami next year, I asked the doctors and the public health office here if my son needed to have this shot and they said that they do not routinely give it to kids here in the US nor is it available because the effectiveness hasn't been proven. Which kinda makes sense kasi I remember my nieces, complete ang shots nila but they still got primary complex. Why kaya?
From what I heard, BCG doesn't guarantee your baby will not get primary complex. The vaccine is to prevent TB from getting into the other organs. Meron kasing ganung case ng TB na malala na at hindi lang lungs ang nadadamage nya.
oh ok. that makes sense DaNa8, thanks!
i didn't know na it also affects the other organs. kakatakot naman!![]()
ptb ata ang tawag dun sa tb test, at hindi siya protection sa bata...mine-measure ng pedia ang test site at kapag lumaki sa certain size, meron primary complex (PC) ang bata at kailangan niya magpa xray at ma-prescribe ng pedia ng mga meds to take for the next 6-8 months. nagkaroon kasi ang anak ko ng PC when he was around 2 yrs old. 10mm yung size ng test site. 8 months sya uminum ng gamot followed by 6 months of B complex.
i was referring to the BCG vaccine which is given to almost all newborns (tama ba?) in the Philippines.
and the skin test is the PPD (purified protein derivative).
also, sabi nga pala sa akin since i tested positive on the PPD, to never have it done again because i might have a more severe reaction to it if done a second time.
thank you for your posts, this is a very helpful thread.
BCG's effectiveness has been debated upon for a long time in western countries. It's not SOP there probably because TB is not prevalent there, but it is prevalent in the Philippines. So if you stay there, I guess BCG is not so important, but if you're coming here where you'll probably meet a TB person whenever you go out of the house, I'd feel safer with a vaccine, even if its effectivity is not proven.
In any case, I get it for free at the health center, so why not?
^Same case as my baby, the TB shot isn't routinely given but the midwives recommended it when I said that we would be flying to the Philippines for the holidays. Libre naman so I went through with it.
sneezy that is strange, the shot is for full-blown TB and doesn't prevent primary complex?
questions, my twins are scheduled for chicken pox vaccine next month, its a good thing daw that its before march kasi madalas ang chickenpox pag summer, anyways, pag may chickenpox vaccine ba, does it mean na never silang makakaroon ng chickenpox or up to a particular age lang?
