I say this is urban legend.

Holding the act of defecation has not been shown to cause appendicitis. The most common cause of appendicitis is a FECALITH. This is nothing but fecal material that has hardened inside the lumen of the appendix causing a small obstruction. Having a fecalith may be due to a prolonged transit time of fecal material in the colon due to many other factors such as a low fiber diet, megacolon, etc. A fecalith is not associated with "pag-pipigil ng dumi". When we hold our defecatory movement, the feces is already in the rectum, way past the appendix. The act of defecation is inevitable, even if you hold your bowel movement for the moment, there will come a time that it has to come out. This is an involuntary reflex and no one can effectively hold his or her bowel.

So, do not have sweat it out with your feces. It is naturally a no brainer activity of daily living. You may move your bowels as you please, no rush.

Hmmm... Inquiry lang po. I just had appendectomy recently. Is 90k for the surgeon's PF a fair price? I went to a rather high end hospital, but still didn't expect it to be that steep since it's a relatively simple surgical procedure. Another thing, is it rude to first inquire about the doctor's PF before surgery? Thanks

it is not rude to ask your physician about the cost of your treatment before it commences. You have a right. Most of my patients ask first.

About that 90K surgeon's professional fee, It is on the steep side but it is not incredible.

Another question. Is it safe to drink alcohol 6 days after an open appendectomy? Thanks

Really? I personally find 90k for an appendectomy as ridiculous. Maybe if it was a complicated case but for a routine appendectomy? I'm not a surgeon but I did assist in appendectomies when I was an intern and I saw nothing in routine appendectomies that would warrant a price tag even close to 90k.

Regarding asking a doctor's PF before surgery, to be frank about it I find stupid not to ask first. If you have no idea about the cost you're setting yourself up for a shock if you come across unscrupulous doctors who view patients as banks or ATM machines rather than people who need help. I don't mince my words because I and my other colleagues have come across them, those who wreck the name of the profession. I cannot forget one patient (a plain blue collar "trabahador) who got charged with an astronomical fee that was grossly disproportionate to the procedure involved, because 1) he didn't ask how much the procedure would cost him, and 2) because the doctor heard the patient's company would be shouldering the cost. Of course the company could shoulder the initial cost but they would deduct it from the patient's wages, which I figure would take him many many years to pay back.

I initially went to the hospital close to my house to have the pain checked and when we found out that it was appendicitis, that's when we transferred to the hospital where i got the surgery. I only had a short conversation with the surgeon as the tests from my previous hospital already gave diagnosis that i have appendicitis. I also had to wait for the surgeon for a few hours so i was already prepped by the nurses and ready for the surgery when the surgeon arrived. Asking for his PF must have slipped my mind also because i was in pain. He made me choose from either open or laparoscopic (i picked open) and went to surgery right away. The anesthesiologist's PF was 36k because they said it is a computation based on the surgeon's PF (40%). So all in all its 126,000 PHP only just for the PF of the doctors. I guess next time I'd know better and i will inquire for the doctor's fee before he does anything with me

May I ask if your abdominal pain is on the right upper or right lower quadrant? Is the pain on and off? Is it aggravated or relieved by food intake?

It’s been a week now when I started to feel an abdominal pain on my upper right quadrant and it is an on and off pain. I feel the pain every time I sit. The pain were aggravated when I am standing straight and when I have taken food but the relief lasts for only an hour or two. I am pessimistic that something bad may happen to me right away without being aware of what my condition is right now. This was also happened to me a year ago; I suffered with pain for a week. But I still have appetite and no signs of vomiting. Please help me conclude on my situation right now. Thank you.

The location of the pain is suggestive of gallbladder, liver or peptic ulcer disease. Please consult your doctor. Ask him or her if you could have an ultrasound done.

One night before eating, I had a sudden pain in my abdomen just below my navel and in the right side of my abdomen. It was really excruciating and it would hurt whenever I would try to stand or laugh. But it only lasted for like 5-10 mins. After that I didn't feel any pain at all. I slept worrying that it might be appendicitis. The next day I feel nauseous but I didn't vomit or something but I have this discomforting feeling in my stomach. Yes, stomach not abdomen. Just below my chest. It feels like I always need to eat or drink or go to the bathroom to poo just to ease the discomfort but it wouldn't go away. Today, it's the 2nd day I'm feeling the discomfort. I also feel an on and off pain/discomfort in my lower back. Sometime on the left, sometime on the other side. Is it appendicitis?

By the way, the day after the abdominal pain, I had my menstruation. So I'm confused if it's just a simple cramp but I never felt anything like the pain before or it's a case of appendicitis?

    Please help. Thanks!

I think you should've asked the surgeon first. It's just okay asking naman for the fee, care providers are responsible for giving information to their patients regarding the PFs and whatnots. Share ko Lang my sister had a major surgery from one of the world's best hospitals and all I can say is we did not pay any PF near to what you mentioned. Anyway, hope you're already well
