Any new recruits, returnees, transferees, etc.?
^This is good news for the UP community. I can't wait to see him play this summer and in the coming UAAP season. I've read from gameface that he will be in team A. Hope that Asilum could easily adjust with the college basketball.
Magsanoc to take over San Beda
Jaemark Tordecilla, InterAKTV · Sunday, April 1, 2012 · 2:24 pm
PBA legend Ronnie Magsanoc will be taking over the reins of the San Beda Red Lions on Monday following the resignation of Frankie Lim.
Magsanoc confirmed the news to InterAKTV in a text message Sunday.
“Will be taking over the San Beda Red Lions starting tomorrow, April 2,” MAgsanoc wrote. “Hoping for your kind support. Thank you.”
A San Beda high school alumnus, Magsanoc first gained acclaim with the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, leading the school to its last championship in 1986. He went on to play 15 seasons in the PBA, where he was named one of the league’s 25 Greatest Players during its silver anniversary.
Since his retirement, he has served as assistant coach under Ryan Gregorio, first at Purefoods and currently at Meralco.
He will be taking over a San Beda basketball program that has won four of the last five NCAA titles, but is currently in disarray following Lim’s departure.
Lim was banned for two years for his role in a brawl at the San Beda campus last year.
He engaged in a heated verbal exchange with San Sebastian volleyball coach Roger Gorayeb that led to a fracas during an NCAA volleyball game at the St. Placid’s Gym in San Beda. Gorayeb, who was also meted a two-year ban, and a female San Sebastian volleyball player, Mae Crisostomo, were hurt during the incident.
The incident started after San Beda’s Nigerian center Ole Adeogun heard chants by male San Sebastian volleyball players that he perceived as a racial slur. But the spikers denied the charge, saying they were misheard and that they were only shouting a standard volleyball warm-up chant that was not directed at Adeogun.
Several members of the Red Lions were also suspended by the league.
Magsanoc’s choice came as no surprise, as he has been named as a likely candidate for the post. Meralco president Manuel V. Pangilinan is an ardent supporter of the Red Lions basketball team.
San Beda's new coaching staff:
Head Coach: Ronnie Magsanoc
Assistant Coaches: Benjie Paras, Xavi Nunag and Patrick Fran
^Wala pa siguro, the summer tournament shows na magulo pa ang rotation ng U.P. siguro the coaches are still looking for the right players to fill in the line-up. Sana nga makapagrecruit sila ng local, kahit ok yung foreign recruits nila UAAP only allow 1 foreign player playing at a time. Malakas talaga players sa other leagues like NAASCU etc. they play they heart out talaga kasi they want to prove something. Hindi lang talaga sila kasing laki ng UAAP and NCAA schools in terms of resources. Hopefully nga for UP existing players and coaches ng UP, sana open arms nila welcome yung mga recruits foreign or local. Sila sila din naman ang magsasama sa team. And their performance will reflect as a team not as individual.
one thing im excited about this season will be the return of some studs who can really play, alvin padilla and mikee reyes. also we got a nice rookie coming from cebu, though he's a little bit undersize.
though the roster is full of small guys, hopefully we can snatch and crack some wins this season.
gamboa / reyes /asilum
manuel / montecastro / lopez
silungan / padilla
romero / juruena
who else? wierzba, hipolito, wong?
Woah, this thread is for general news about UP ayt? I'm UPMVT fan here, I wonder if dapat nang gawan sila ng separate thread? Just sayin though. :/
Who knows? They might be the biggest surprise of the season.
Sam is now officially part of UP Team B. he started training with them kaninang umaga yata.
^ that will only happen if DLSU waived the two-year residency requirement for transfer players akin to what it did when Nico Elorde transferred to Ateneo. otherwise, Sam has to red shirt for two seasons before finally suiting up for UP in the UAAP.
