Palmar hyperhydrosis, which is the high-tech name for sweaty palms, is linked to overactivity in the sympathetic nervous system. Specifically, it is the thoracic sympathetic ganglion chain, which runs along the vertebra of the spine inside the chest cavity. This chain controls the glands, know as the apocrine and eccrine glands, responsible for perspiration throughout the entire body. Depending on which part of the chain becomes overactive, different parts of the body become affected.
Sometimes people will sweat excessively because of other illnesses such as hyperthyroidism, psychiatric disorders, menopause and obesity. These causes must first be ruled out before Primary Hyperhidrosis can be diagnosed.
How about in "normal" people, is it caused by anxiety, fear etc ?
Sweating can be a normal reaction caused by anxiety and fear, which triggers the sympathetic nervous system. Excessive sweating (let's say, your palms are sweating even when you live in Alaska) isn't.
Hi doc!
Am from Baguio and despite the cool temperature here I perspire a lot. I really dont perspire much in my body but only in my face. And when I perspire I really drip. One might even think that I just took a bath/shower.
I know that perspiring means a healthy body but is this so with my condition? Is there cause for alarm?
Thanks!!!
If you don't have any other symptoms except sweating, then that's fine. It doesn't matter if you live in Baguio--you are already acclimatized to the temperature there, so your sweating profusely is normal. It's just our body's way of regulating our inner temperature. Some people sweat more than others--that's how nature made us.![]()
doc,
what causes sweaty hands and feet (eto yung di na normal at hindi dahil lang sa nerbyos)? what would you advise to cease this "wet" query?
Hyperhydrosis, which is the high-tech name for excessive sweating, is linked to overactivity in the sympathetic nervous system, which controls the apocrine and eccrine glands responsible for perspiration throughout the entire body. You can stop this problem permanently by undergoing a surgical procedure where you cut the nerves controlling these glands. Short of that, you can either apply Driclor once a day until sweating stops, then reduce the application to 1-2x a week, or have a Botox injection to paralyze the nerves. However, the Botox injection for treatment of hyperhydrosis is still under study. But if it's not really a severe problem naman, just use tissue to wipe the excess sweat off, and avoid wearing confining shoes if you can.

In drugstores.
thanks doc! one soul saved! been my problem since i can remember. now, i'll try that driclor. no money kasi for surgical operations.
if your hyperhidrosis is anything as bad as mine used to be, i suggest you save up for that surgery. i went under the knife in 1993, and all my hands ever needed since were lotions and moisturizers =) the procedure is called endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy, and works instantaneously. there are complications (hey, nothing's perfect), but nothing compares to being able to hold or shake hands. if you're interested to know more, drop me a note. God bless.
doc, i bought driclor & i've already used it for around 5 days already (although i did not apply it on my hands for consecutive days because i experience itching), but i fear that it has a very minimal effect. my hands still sweat profusely, but i could notice some improvement. what should i do?
Just continue with it. The effect takes a period of time. If it still doesn't improve after a few weeks and it really bothers you, consult a neurologist. Maybe some of them are already offering Botox injections for your problem. Otherwise, I'm afraid you'll have to go under the knife for that.
thank you very much, i really appreciate the reply.
um, doc, if you don't mind...what's your specialization?
I'm training in neurosurgery.
