What are the top medical schools in the philippines?

What are the top medical schools in the philippines?
    how is the admission?
    also...what are their tuition fees?
how does the education here compete with the medical programs of other countries such as those in Asia(China, Japan, Korea) or those of the US?

Cebu Doctors' University - the first medical university in the Philippines

There is no good reliable rankings of "best schools" in the Philippines, let alone the best medical schools. Unofficial ranking of medical schools in the Philippines is based on school's passing percentage in board examinations, a flawed criterion not used in the USA and many countries in the West. In the USA for example, results of the USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3 that tests encompassing knowledge in basic and clinical sciences, clinical competence and actual patient care is not included in the ranking criteria. U.S. students, counselors and parents have always looked at the U.S. News and World Report Magazine's rankings of medical schools with skepticism despite using a wider criteria including: l) peer assessment, 2) assesment scores by residency directors, 3) selectivity rank, 4) undergraduate GPA, 5) average MCAT score, 6) acceptance rate, 7) NIH research grant, 8) NIH grants per faculty member, 9) faculty student ratio and 10) graduates entering primary care. If you use the flawed passing percentage in the Philippine Medical Licensure Exam this year as the lone basis for the rankings then you have:

    1. University of the Philippines 97%
    2. Cebu Institute of Medicine 88%,
    3. Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila 86%
    4. University of Santo Tomas 84%.

^^ What should be the criteria then?

The board exam can give you a picture of which schools perform relatively better than the rest. I agree though that it should be not the lone basis.

If somebody could come up with statistical data using modified criteria of the US News & World Report ranking that would be much better than using the licensing exam passing percentage alone. Adding one criterion makes it a tad better and right off the bat I can give you the the minimum MCAT score requirement for some schools (4 years back)--- UP 90th percentile, UST 65th percentile, UERM 55th percentile.

GR8_GUY is right. The board exams is a flawed criterion. The board exams just measures how much a med student knows and not how good they are. Maraming matalino na naaalala nila yung nababasa nila pero pag nagpractice na hindi na makasabay. Madaming ganyang doctors. Mga book/theory doctors. They can tell what's wrong with you but they can't cure you.

Going into a good school is important pero what makes a good doctor e yung madaming experience sa toxic cases. Yung tipong 1 gun shot wound e hindi pa toxic kasi meron kang kasabay na 5 gun shot wounds. UP definitely has this kind of exposure kasi naka tie-up sila sa PGH. DLSU-HSC in dasma also has this kind of exposures kasi sila lang yung hospital na matino for a long stretch. Other school din na malapit sa mga magugulong area e may ganitong exposures din. Pagod sila pero punong-puno sila ng experience and yun ang dahilan kung bakit magaling sila.

If you want to become a doctor with heart, go to UST. A 90 MCAT score won't assure you of becoming one very compassionate doctor.

    Patch Adams is right.

but it might get you admitted to UP-PGH.

we have too many compassionate doctors who stand by and watch their patients die.

^^ Maybe the compassionate doctors can only do so much with limited resources in public hospitals.

Just imagine a patient having a tantrum and is suddenly pelted with eggs.

If you go for board exam results as a criterion, a single board exam result last year is not a good measure. Go for the historical data (maybe a 10-year period) of each school to guide you if you have plans to take up a medical course.

Actually, you can tell the difference of the "culture" among doctors from PGH, Jose Reyes Memorial, UST and UERM. The doctors from the public hospitals are "good" but "snobbish", while the UST and UERM doctors are also "good" but compassionate. My friend told me that it could be the PR factor from private hospital doctors working there... they need to be nice. However, you can tell that they are sincere.

I must stress that I don't generalize doctors from PGH and JRMMC as snobbish... only a good number of them.

  15. #15
well a lot of UP-diliman premeds who don't make it to PGH go to UERM. i guess compassion is second choice.
