    Post just one tiny question

What's the difference between hypochondria and hypochondriasis?
Or are they one and the same?

    Ano difference nito sa psychosomatic?

  5. #65

    Post

Psychosomatic illness is a condition wherein a person's state of mind either causes or aggravates an actual physical ailment. There is an actual, measurable disease, but it's caused by a person being able to think himself sick. Hypochondriasis is a preoccupation with fears of having a disease, even if medical exam and labs show no evidence that a person's sick. For example, a hypochondriac misinterprets insignificant body signals like maybe an isolated cough or sneeze to mean that he's dying of pneumonia.

    Question

a question for the doctors in the house:

i'm currently reviewing for the bar exams. recently, i've been suffering what i term as "anxiety attacks." i feel jittery all over, i can't sleep at night, but if i try to make myself sleepy by studying or reading a book i end up feeling more awake than ever. i've tried drinking milk to calm me down, but i started having hyperacidity, which i never had before. in school , whenever i try to study, i feel tingly all over and i resist the urge to jump about the place. sometimes my heart also beats rapidly the whole day that i can't breath properly.

is there a thing as an anxiety attack? if so, how can it be relieved?

    thank you.

Anxiety attacks like yours are temporary and will most likely disappear once the stress of the exams are done. Everyone undergoing board or bar exams experiences the same thing. The milk didn't give you hyperacidity, so it's okay for you to take it. If you want, you can see an internist or a psychiatrist so you can be given anti-anxiety medications for the duration of the reviews. While the initial effect will be sleepiness for the first few days, it will disappear after a short while and you'll feel calmer without the associated sleepiness. Also, avoid cramming if you can, and allot a little time everyday for rest and relaxation. And you should realise that no matter how much you study, you will never be able to memorize and master everything, so relax. The trick is to read and understand just enough material so that you know a little more than the other bar exams takers.

    Post another question, doc

    doc ira:

i don't know if this is in any way connected to my anxiety attacks, but i better ask about it.

recently, i began experiencing back pains, specifically along my lower back, just above the buttocks. the pains occur especially when i remain seated for long periods of time. a friend of mine suspects that it could be either chronic lower back pain, or else a pinched nerve, since the pain radiates from my lower back down to my left leg.

the pains have become so severe that sometimes i can't get up from bed, or stand up without wincing in pain.

is massage recommended, or should i take any medication to lessen, if not get rid of, the pain? thanks for the reply

Question Psychiatric evaluation required for annulment

Someone I know is getting her marriage annulled and a psychiatric evaluation is one of the requirements. The psychiatrist that her lawyer recommended is charging 40,000 for the evaluation itself and 10,000 for each court appearance. Is that the going rate? Or are there somewhat cheaper options?

    Many thanks in advance!

40,000 pesos! holy sh*t! why is it that i suddenly want to specialize in psychiatry?...

You can probably find a more inexpensive psychiatrist somewhere in Metro Manila, but the fee cited would be about average. If the psychiatrist is already experienced in annulment matters, I'd say just consider it an investment. Not all psychiatrists can handle annulment cases.

It's not connected to your anxiety attack. Sounds like you have a pinched lumbar nerve/sciatica, at the very least. You should see either a neurosurgeon or an orthopedic surgeon to see whether it's only a mild form or whether you would need other forms of treatment like traction/physical therapy. In the meantime, avoid activities which put a strain on your back, like golf or maybe bending from the waist to pick up an object. Take NSAIDs like Celebrex 200 mg 2x a day after meals continuously for around 3 days to minimize the inflammation in the area, then decrease the dose to an as needed basis.

Post To Doc Ira: Anxiety attacks and IBS

I think I'm suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome caused by anxiety, excitement, nervousness, etc. My husband says that it's psychological (or hindi daw naging maganda yun toilet training ko when I was little) but then I really can't help it. Sobrang attack sya talaga when something big is coming up (like an outing, a departmental meeting, a social engagement). Kahit isipin ko na psychological lang, wa-effect talaga. By the way, IBS-Diarrhea ako. Hyperacidic din ako (most of the time).

To give you a family history, my Mom had schizophrenic episodes about ten years ago. She's well na kaso she's on lifetime medication. Everytime she has a scheduled interview with SSS (for her pension), sobrang constipated sya for 3-5 days. Nasa lahi ata namin yun eh.

Does it mean that I need to see a psychiatrist as well to cure my IBS? Or pede naman makuha sa medications? Dyahe talaga eh.

Big bags are no-no's, especially if you have back pains. Celebrex is available without a prescription.
