[MERGED]The Ear, the Nose and the Throat (The ENT Thread)

, tapos sorethroat ko pa matindi.

    kahapon naparami lang chocolate ko
    eto na naman....

Well if you do smoke, I think you should give it up for a while. Antibiotics will help but too much of anything is not good. Try strepsils for easy remedy and gargle with bactidol. Also eating chocolates will make your throat sore because it doesn't go to the stomach smoothly. Some bits do stay at our throat and that causes the infection. So after eating chocolates, you should wash it down with water and brush your teeth, especially before going to sleep. If these doesn't work then consult your doctor.

I'm not a doctor but I'm just basing it from experience. There's no harm in trying!

angelbutterfly has dispensed really helpful, common sense advice. You can try her tips first.

If your aunt is a doctor, why don't you have her take a look? Antibiotics may be warranted if and only if the cause of the sore throat is really a bacterial infection. Otherwise, it's useless. Only by examining the tonsillopharygeal area can the doctor have an idea if you really do need the antibiotics.

P.S. Please don't flood the forum with similar topics. You have already posted this question 3 times...

doc, shoudn't a person prone to frequent sore throats receive some prophylaxis to guard against Rheumatic Heart Disease? just curious...

  7. #7

    Post

Not necessarily. Rheumatic heart disease is an delayed complication to a history of streptococcus throat infection.

Here's a previous thread on this...

Not all sore throats, btw, are caused by streptococcus.

Symptoms common in individuals with streptococcal pharyngitis or tonsillitis include sore throat (generally of sudden onset), pain on swallowing, and fever of varying degree (usually from 38 to 40 degrees). Headache, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting may occur, especially in children.

Clinical signs suggesting streptococcal infection are primarily tonsillopharyngeal erythema with or without exudate and anterior cervical lymphadenitis. Other findings include soft palate petechiae, beefy red swollen uvula, excoriated nares (especially in infants), and a scarlatiniform rash. However, none of these manifestations is specific, and they can occur with other respiratory tract infections. Signs and symptoms usually not associated with streptococcal infection are coryza, hoarseness, cough, diarrhea, conjunctivitis, anterior stomatitis, and discrete ulcerative lesions.

Symptoms of acute pharyngitis are caused more often by viruses than by group A streptococcus (GAS). Differentiation of GAS pharyngitis from viral pharyngitis based on history and clinical findings is difficult.

A throat swab and culture should help in establishing the diagnosis of a suspicious case. If it does turn out to be caused by the group A hemolytic streptococcus, a course of penicillin should kill the bacteria and prevent rheumatic fever from occurring.

nagpa throat swab /culture ako kanina sa lab, lagpas 1 week na and antibitotics bumabalik parin sore throat di lang nga ganun kasakit na...

    kakatakot pala sorethroat...
normal ba yung ganung klaseng sorethroat?

normal ba yung ganung klaseng sorethroat?
    Walang NORMAL sa sore throat.

If you mean that "common ba yung ganung klaseng sore throat?"...

It is common in the sense that the organism is actually part of the normal throat flora. However, the numbers are usually not that large to cause an infection. Also, with the morbid presentation it has, most of the time, patients with this consult a doctor already and are prescribed antibiotics, thus the long term complications don't set in. It's now mostly seen with people who have less access to doctors and antibiotics, usually with those in the low socioeconomic group and those in the countryside (probinsya).

    thanks doc...
heheh what i mean is common pala

  11. #11

    Post

If it's viral there is nothing really you can do but just wait for it to subside. In the meantime, you can continue with your Bactidol mouthwash. You can also use Orofar L or Difflam lozenges if it really feels bad.

No, not a powder. It's actually a thick syrup, medyo minty ang flavor. It's available in most Chinese drug stores. The main ingredient is an extract of the "Pei Pa" fruit (don't know what it is in English).

Is this effective and safe in curing and preventing sore throat?

  17. #17

    Post

It relieves sore throat. This means that you'll feel more comfortable. This is also true with gargles and lozenges. These, do not, however, target the cause of the sore throat, hence, they do not cure, much less prevent, sore throat.

    Post thick syrup..

hi there wolfman! anyway, i am not into lozenges kasi if i have sore throat. you can give this a try:

after brushing your teeth (pag me sore throat ka), you can gargle warm water with salt (mas maganda kung iodized para in case na malunok mo eh me iodine ). gargle at least three times a day. salt kasi neutralizes the bacteria or germs causing sore throat.

or yung filipino remedy na salabat. you can boil ginger and inumin mo sya. actually ginger has antiseptic properties kaya it is ok in treating sore throat.

but of course, you should seek professional help if your sore throat persists more than two or three days.
