Those dudes in Chinatown SOHO whack those ducks in head, gut them, cook them, and sell them at ostentatious prices to unwary New Yorkers who are looking for the best Peking Duck meal in town.

the first time i read this book and got to know holden.....i felt so asteeg...hehe....i think i was 12 or so at that time......i wanted to be like him.....some sort of an intellectual young cynic....

i particularly related to the part when he was chastising the school principal for being biased with students with awkward looking parents....well at least i saw this kind of thing happening in my former school......he couldn't have described the nasty principal any better.....

try reading TAWNI O'DELL's BACK ROADS. The main character is very similar with HOLDEN CLAUFIELD. troubled teen bursting with angst!

"...a youth, father to what will, must someday be a man, more intelligent than some and more sensitive than most, who (he would not even have called it by instinct because he did not know he possessed it) because God perhaps had put it there, loved man and wished to be a part of mankind, humanity, who tried to join the human race and failed. To me, his tragedy was not that he was, as he perhaps thought, not tough enough or brave enough or deserving enough to be accepted into humanity. His tragedy was that when he attempted to enter the human race, there was no human race there." - william faulkner on holden caulfield

faulkner beat me to it. not that i could have said it more fittingly and more eloquently.
so much has been said about good old holden. they say it's either you love him or you despise him. it's highly unlikely to be somewhere in between. i say those who choose the latter just don't get him. or the whole catcher in the rye saga for that matter. but they're right: when you love holden, you love all of holden. you don't fall in love with the catcher in the rye protagonist solely for his positive qualities. you can’t help but also be enthralled by his imperfections and flaws (based on society’s standards). to be amused by his distinct wit and unconscious humour ("you can hit my father over the head with a chair and he won't wake up, but my mother, all you have to do to my mother is cough somewhere in Siberia and she'll hear you. She's nervous as hell.") is to also be amused by his slang and profanity ( he said 'goddamn' more than two hundred times and 'phony' about 35 times). to admire his rare intelligence and precocity is to also get the rewarding feeling of wanting to soothe his wounded soul. to tell him that somebody understands and shares his sentiments..to even go as far as to encourage his pessimism and tell him “I’m with you”. you cant love his affection and tender concern for phoebe and the kids in the cliff and the ducks in the central park and not love his love-hate relationship with stradlater and ackley ("..about all I know is, I sort of miss everybody I told about. even old Stradlater and Ackley, for instance.") for these reasons and more, Holden Caulfield is inarguably one of the most unique characters that ever graced the literary universe. for these reasons and a million more, Holden Caulfield is one of my three favorite male fictional characters (the other two being seymour and zooey glass, also by salinger).

I've read books that had better plots than Catcher in the Rye but I have to admit there is not one character who is more complex or cooler than J.D Salinger's Holden Caulfied! Lagi kong inuulit-ulit tong librong to!

"That killed me!" "That nearly killed me!" -->Yan ang trademark niyang linya. Hehehe

'so much has been said about good old holden. they say it's either you love him or you despise him. it's highly unlikely to be somewhere in between.'

Believe me, franny, when I say I am unlikely as they come; in other words, I can understand and sympathize with Holden's plight while being repelled by his egotism and his all-too-vague hatred for the status quo of his time.

i actually like this book but i guess i was too young when i read it, i didn't really appreciate the magic/beauty of it. i looked around in the net, some were saying to reread this when the reader gets older and by then there'll be a different interpretation of the book. thinking of rereading it when i'm 30.

it sucks, i actually have a phsyical book for this, lent it to someone, never got it back. dammit.
