BY ED CONDRAN
In the world of music, much has changed in the last four years. So, in 2005, when Denver's The Fray emerged, radio helped establish the pop-rock act, which won over fans with an energy that recalls U2 and a songcraft reminiscent of Maroon 5.
The title track from "How to Save a Life" peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 back then; it also went top five in Britain, Australia and Sweden thanks to radio's loving embrace. The catchy song "Over My Head (Cable Car)" became a top 10 hit in America, and that buoyed the group's initial album to double platinum.
"That was a great start for us," vocalist-guitarist Isaac Slade says in a call from Holmdel, N.J. "We were really fortunate that things worked out the way they did for us. Everything fell into place for us and we just ran with it."
Since then, the group has toured extensively and released a live album, 2006's "Live at the Electric Factory: Bootleg No. 1." The band, which includes guitarists Dave Welsh and Joe King and drummer Ben Wysocki, has built a strong fan base.
One of the things The Fray is doing to build on success is to be as accessible as possible, and that means figuring out the new electronic avenues to success. That's why they let the ABC drama "Lost" use a snippet of the single "You Found Me" during a promo. The move helped bolster sales.
"TV is the new radio," Slade says. "We're just trying to stay ahead of the curve and keep things going. You have to keep your fingers on the pulse of the changing media or you'll be left behind."
Still, The Fray hasn't changed much with its second album. That isn't a bad thing. The band, continues to primarily craft consistent midtempo pop-rock. Some songs are a bit more muscular and some of the ballads are a bit softer, but the group hasn't altered its sonic formula much.
The Fray will be re-releasing their latest album on November 10th as a limited deluxe edition with a bonus disc
Disc 1 is the original album, but here’s the track list for disc 2:

5. Fair Fight [Live Version]
6. Be The One [Demo Version]

Scars & Stories Album 2011
Epic Records will release the critically acclaimed Denver-based foursome The Fray’s third album Scars& Stories February 7. The band’s 2005 double-platinum debut, which featured the hit single “How to Save a Life,” garnered critical praise from People Magazine, who called the album “addictive.” The Fray, who received a 2010 Grammy nomination for their self-titled release have made numerous television appearances including “The David Letterman Show,” “The Today Show,” “Good Morning America,” “The Tonight Show” and many more. The first single off the new album “Heartbeat” is now available for download on iTunes. The band will premiere the new single on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” October 27 kicking off the first night of sweeps.
Scars & Stories leads with “Heartbeat,” of which lead-singer Isaac Slade notes, “That song came out of a period of my life when I was trying hard to be open to whatever came my way. I traveled through South Africa and Rwanda with a buddy, and at first it was really hard to stay open in the face of so much pain and heartache. But then I ended up meeting so many cool and inspiring people, and all these ideas for lyrics and melodies just started rushing in.” The inspiration specifically came from a chance meeting with an expatriate woman. Speaking of the miracle of the capital city overcoming such remarkable odds, the two held hands and Slade reveals “I felt so connected to her. I couldn’t tell if it was her pulse or mine.”
The album was recorded at the legendary Blackbird Studios in Nashville. The Fray was able to hone their sound with the help of producer Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, and Neil Young). On the new recording, the band transforms their real life experiences into a collection of songs that are reflective, but still maintain a pop sensibility. The making of Scars and Stories fostered the most evolution the band has ever experienced, both lyrically and musically. “On our first record, we didn’t quite trust ourselves yet,” says Slade. “We loosened up on the second album, but there was still some element of restraint. But on this one, we just stepped up to plate and swung as hard as we could....”
