Benilde sweeps SSC By June Navarro SWIFT kill. Duplicating sister school De La Salle University's feat, College of St. Benilde completed its date with history with an emphatic 74-61 runaway triumph over San Sebastian yesterday to win the 76th NCAA men's basketball tournament at the capacity-filled Rizal Memorial Coliseum. ![]() Only last week, the Green Archers clinched the millennium title of the UAAP, trouncing the FEU Tamaraws in two games. The Blazers duplicated that as La Sallians celebrated the swift mopping up operations against opponents deemed too tough to demolish. ''Nobody believed that we are capable of winning the championship. So I told them we just have to believe in ourselves and prove our detractors wrong,'' said coach Dong Vergeire of St. Benilde, which entered the league only in 1997. After an 0-3 start, the Blazers razed every obstacle that came their way, winning 13 of their last 15 matches, including the last two scored against the Stags to win the title. ''This team had been severely criticized but the boys are too eager and determined to win. Frankly, they deserved to be here,'' said Vergeire, who piloted the country to a gold in the 1997 SEA Games in Jakarta. In the juniors championship, underdog Mapua Red Robins finished off erstwhile league-leader Letran Squires, 77-55, to snare the crown and cap a year of turnarounds in the league. The Red Robins snapped the Squires' 14-game winning streak in the eliminations and overhauled the latter's twice-to-beat advantage to share the limelight with the Blazers, who, similarly, trounced the highly favored UPHR Altas in the Final Four. The Blazers actually encountered little resistance, taking the game away early in the second half as the Stags had a nightmarish date on the stripe. Defeat seemed imminent, as the Stags couldn't get their rhythm on the stripe going, flubbing 28 of their 44 free throws for a measly 36 percent clip. In contrast, the Blazers had a heyday at the stripe, coupled by their torrid outside shooting and accurate forays inside the paint. The Blazers had a 77 percent clip from the line, sinking 21 of 27 attempts. From an 11-12 deficit, the Blazers clustered 10 points to make it 21-12. With their deep bench, the Blazers easily took the half, 37-25, before speeding to a 16-point margin, 54-38. The Stags had all the time to mount a rally as the game was still 11.24 away from conclusion. But the Blazers were up to every challenge posed by the Stags, whose awful free throw shooting literally wiped out their dream of forcing a deciding third game. ''Our free throw shooting killed us,'' said Stags coach Turo Valenzona in Tagalog. ''That simple.'' The scores: (Juniors) Mapua 77-Malig 26, Martin 19, Martinez 13, Cantos 10, Dela Cruz 4, Sta. Maria 3, Estilo 2, Villafuerte 0, Estrada 0. Letran 55-Enrile 16 Anabo 12, Balneg 7, Lim 6, Buyco 6, Bautista 3, Dacanay 3, Zalsos 2. Halftime: 37-32 (Seniors) St. Benilde 74-Magsumbol 15, Salvacion 9, Mendoza 9, Perlas 8, Salvador 7, Lapinid 6, Tolentino 5, Capati 4, Magpayo 3, Diloy 3, Cruz 2, Reyes 2, Castro 1, Coching 0. SSC 61-Alfad 15, Macapagal 14, Vinoya 9, Reguerra 8, Coronel 6, Uy 4, Falcasantos 3, Mercado 2, Gonzales 0, Cummings 0. Halftime: 37-25 |

congrats benilde, you deserve it....actually WE all deserve winning!!!!
YAHOOOOOOOOOOOO! You want a bak 2 bak, four peat???? well the answer is simple. believe....... di nyo ba napansin na both squads won despite all odds? La Salle won despite being the underdogs same goes with benilde. At the begining of the season no one thought they could do it. La Salle daw is third only to UST and Atneo, while benilde was supposed to be another onlooker. Ang galing talaga maging lasalite! |

I have heard it already last game 1. Let's face it. Medyo pangit pakinggan eh. no offense but I still fully support the BLAZERS! |

But what can we do? we added St. Benilde to our "pray for us" routine and "Benildeans" who are studying in CSB and serves as our identity. We Benildeans are proud to be Benildeans after all. PEACE! Animo Benilde! Animo La Salle! |

Now that’s something new: a cheering squad that is too loud!
There’s no denying that the NCAA Board has been on CSB’s case since its inclusion, but as I’ve said before, some of the board’s decision is not as idiotic as it seems to be. War-paints, halftime performances during the Finals, and the different schools’ distinctive stance are mostly tolerated in the UAAP, but in the NCAA, where even a simple jeer can lead to a riot (JRC-Letran incident) and where a player – supposedly his/her school’s role model – shows maniacal tendencies (Letran’s Soriano’s action), the board decision to ban such make some sense. I guess they are not really against CSB in doing such, but they are wary of the reactions of their students towards such acts. It is like they are admitting that their students are not mature enough to handle such a trivial show of support. It’s the prohibition of using DLSU, La Salle, and even the green-and-white that isn’t completely clear to me. Poor LSGH. I kindda understand their resentment to DLSU. I guess they still feel that La Salle is one of the schools and apparently the most recent one to abandon them. I thought that they were beyond that already when they included DLSU-CSB in its rank, but I guess they are not completely over it. They want to have some form of payback – and what better way to do that than to prevent the Benildeans from professing they are indeed Lasallians, but guess what, I think this ruling actually did some good for the Benildeans. They forced the Benildeans to be Benildeans more than the Benildeans wanted to. The NCAA might have expected to have a “part” of La Salle as their whipping boy, but they found out that eventhough they prohibited the Benildeans from openly professing that they La Sallians, the Benildeans were able to show that they are. The Animo the’ve shown through the years and the Lasallian winning tradition are dead give-aways. ![]() |
