THE COUNTRY’S youngest International master is threatening to become the youngest grandmaster as well.

Wesley So, 13, became the youngest Filipino to earn a GM result even as fellow IM Darwin Laylo also gained a GM norm in the German International Open Chess Championship Sunday in Bad Wiessee, Germany.

So, the former whiz kid from Bacoor, Cavite, split the point with GM Vladimir Georgiev of Macedonia after just 10 moves to better the performance of GM Mark Paragua, who got his first result at 17.

The 27-year-old Laylo, from Lipa City, Batangas, also drew with GM Konstantin Landa of Russia.

So, who became the country’s youngest IM at 12, and Laylo finished in a tie for third with 16 others, including compatriot IMs Jayson Gonzales and Oliver Dimakiling.

After the tiebreak was applied, So emerged the best-placed Filipino at seventh overall.

So finished behind eventual champion GM Stelios Halkias of Greece (7.5), GM Alexander Shabalov of the United States (7.5), and fellow 7-pointers GMs Al Modiahki of Qatar, Alexander Moiseenko of Ukraine, Igor Khenkin of Germany and Landa.

Gonzales toppled GM Sergei Krivoshey of Ukraine while Dimakiling nipped FM Stephan Buchal of Germany in the final round.

IM-elect John Paul Gomez of Laguna trounced Klaus Francesco of Germany to finish with 6.5 points and emerge runner-up in the 2400 and below category.

Gonzales could have completed his GM status, but fell eight points short after tabulating the average rating of his opponents. The average rating of his opponents was 2373 while the required was 2381. NM Marlon Bernardino

    *********************************************************

Good thing thatSo (1st) and Laylo (2nd) were able to achieve GM results in this tournament. Congratulations also to IM Gomez for being a full-pledged IM. I just hope that IM Gonzales will get his last GM result in his next tournament.

ceedee, do you have an idea on who are the players being investigated due to alleged game-fixing? do you know who is the champion of the Tanauan Open? I think he is being invcestigated also based on what I saw on NBN Teledyaryo Sports yesterday.

i dont have any idea who are the players that are being investigated. IM Chito Garma won the Tanauan Open last October. He almost swept the star-studded field by scoring 10.5 points out of possible 11 points. he defeated three GMs Torre, Antonio and Paragua and top-rated IMs Darwin Laylo, Ronald Dableo, and Yves Ranola along the way. IM Richard Bitoon was the only player who forced a draw against IM Garma who won 100 thousand pesos, by far the biggest cash prize last year.

if he was being investigated for winning this tournament, then Pichay must also investigate those players who lost to IM Garma.

so far, wala e... in fact, sa FIDE calendar, d nakalagay ang tournament na ito.

anyway, eto ang pinakaupdate sa campaign nila.

GM Mark Paragua (ELO 2573) will be the top seed in this tough nine round Swiss tournament that will start tomorrow. IM Wynn Zaw Htun (ELO 2566) of Myanmar and GM Dao Thien Hai (ELO 2559) of Vietnam will be seeded second and third respectively followed by two more Filipino GMs Rogelio Antonio (2551) and Eugene Torre (2547). six more Filipino woodpushers, four of them seeking GM norms, will join the tournament where the two top men placers will qualify for 2007 World Chess Championship. IMs Ronald Dableo and Darwin Laylo need one more GM norm to become a full-pledged GM. while IMs Wesley So and Oliver Dimakiling shoot for their second norm. GM Nelson Mariano and unrated Leo Daylo complete the Filipino line-up. their strongest rivals will come from Viet GMs Nguyen Anh Dung, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Le Quang Liem. the top rated grandmaster, GM Utut Adianto of Indonesia (2583) is conspicuously absent in this field.
Catherine Perena (2227), on the other hand, will spearhead the country's campaign in the distaff side. she is seeded sixth behind WGM Bathuyaag Mongontuul of Mongolia and four Vietnamese players. joining Perena are WFM Sheerie Joy Lomibao (ELO 2183), WIM Beverly Mendoza (ELO 2182), Sherily Cua (ELO 2061), Kimberly Jane Cunanan ( ELO 1968) , Doha campaigner Jedara Docena (ELO 1957) and Christy Lamiel Bernales.

    good luck....
