Poor form sends Paragua tumbling out of Top 100
that article didnt included the ELO rating of our whiz kid FM Wesley So... its already at 2330 up by 75 ELO points.

other prominent RP players in the list are:

GM Bong Villamayor 2430 (12th ranked)
NM Darwin Laylo 2428 (13th ranked)
IM Jayson Gonzales 2426 (14th ranked)

btw, the results of san marino open was not included in the July's calculation so definitely Paragua is already out of the Super GM status as of this moment.

meantime, NM Shercila Cua is now our country's top women chessplayer. her ELO rating stands at 2229, two points ahead of our Olympiad heroine NM Catherine Perena. rounding out the top 10 are Enerose Magno (2192), WFM Sheerie Joy Lomibao (2188), WIM Beverly Mendoza (2147), WIM Christine Rose Mariano (2083), NM Lorizel Quizon (2077), Olympiad NM Sherily Cua (2061), NM Kimberly Jane Cunanan (1975), NM Geneline Ramos (1867).

Modesty aside my ranking before was 1850 but it was not official. Sa province lang namin kasi lagi may tournaments at inaaply namin ang pagadd like ratings like sa computer game. Chess kasi dapat araw-araw at presko lagi. Nakakafrustrate. Hope to play with you guys sa net one of these days.

alekhine is one of my favorite openings kasi patayan kaagad sa centerboard ang labanan. pag black pieces naman ang hawak ko, i usually countered sicilian pag e4 ang first move ng white. pero depende rin kung ano ang first move ng white. like you, medyo matagal na rin ako d naglalaro ng chess dahil sa daming work. but once in a while, nagbabasa din ako ng chess books or nanood ng games sa internet like what i did sa kakatapos lang na Olympiad.

sa totoo lang, may pagka-complicated ang pag-compute ng ELO ratings. pero there are two important basis on how to compute. the strength of the tournament a player is participating, and the strength of his opponent he will meet in a certain round of the tournament. pag tinalo ng isang player ang mas mataas na rated player, mas malaki ang matatanggap mong ELO points. pag natalo siya sa mababang rated player, babawasan yun sa ELO points nya.

Yes, I agree with cedee. It is complicated to compute the ELO rating. But the basic idea is that if you have a rating of 1800 you are expected to beat one at 1600 by the same margin with a ratio of 3:1 like someone who is rated 2600 beating a 2400 player.

Example would be the match between Fischer and Spassky in the 1972 championships, they had ratings of 2785 and 2675 respectively which suggested Fischer would win 13:7. But the actual result was 12.5:7.5 excluding the defaulted game and so Fischer won the championship but made his rating went down slightly.

    another disturbing news....

    got this news from tempo.....

3 GMs up in arms over Asiad chess elims format
    By NOLI CRUZ

Grandmasters Mark Paragua, Joey Antonio and Eugene Torre, who played the top boards in the recent World Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy, said they will not take part in the 11-round Swiss System tournament that begins Sept. 1 at SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

Only three slots, including one for a female player, will be disputed in the elimination event to be held barely three months before the Asiad set in Doha, Qatar.

Torre and Paragua are batting for a round-robin event while Antonio questioned the wisdom of using one event to choose the country’s representatives.

"We’re not asking to be seeded in the team. All we want is to make it a round-robin affair," said Torre, noting that the format does not determine the best players.

"Hindi ako maglalaro ng pag hindi nila babaguhin ang format," Torre said.

He pointed out that Indonesia and host country Qatar have seeded their best players in the team.

Indonesia will be represented by GMs Utut Adianto and Susanto Megaranto while Qatar even tapped Armenian GM Vladimir Akopian to combine forces with GM Al Modiakhi.

Paragua, the only Filipino to have breached the 2600 ELO barrier, echoed Torre’s sentiments.

"S’yempre gusto natin na ‘yung best players ang mag-represent sa bansa natin," Paragua said. "Sa Swiss kasi kahit untitled player p’wedeng umangat kapag maganda ang simula at sinuwerte sa pairing."

Antonio, on the other hand, contended that the NCFP should not make one tournament as basis for the selection of national players.

"Tama sila (Torre/ Paragua) pero para sa akin one-year performance ang tignan nila. That way sure tayo na malakas ang representative natin sa Asian Games, SEA Games at Olympiad," said Antonio, the country’s top scorer in the last Olympiad.

Due to his failing health, Antonio said he may skip the event.

"I am taking medication right now so I don’t think I am ready to play," he said.

Contacted for comment, NCFP executive director lawyer Samuel Estimo promised to raise the issue brought up by the three GMs in the next board meeting.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

same old issue again.... with three and a half months to go before Doha Asiad Games, ngayon lang nila naisipan magkaroon ng elimination tournament? akala ko ba nagbago na ang chess federation under pichay?

Ako naman, I used to play competitive chess nung college pa ko but when i started working, madalang na. However, when i took my MBA, bumalik yung interest ko. We won a gold medal in one of the annual inter-MBA chess tournament.... Minsan, Najdorf.

    Here's a good line-up

    B1 GM Mark Paragua
    B2 GM Eugene Torre
    B3 GM Rogelio Antonio
    B4 IM Oliver Dimakiling
    R1 FM Wesley So
R2 IM Ronald Dableo (IM ba sya or NM?)

A round-robin is always good. How about mixing it up with 2 rapid games after the initial match? This will prevent, somehow, draws.

the chess competition in Doha Asiad games will be a mixed team competition. each country will be represented by 2 males and one female player.it will be a nine round swiss system tournament in two different events, the classical and rapid chess.

with that development, dapat round-robin tournament ang kailangan sa elimination. but with time running out, its better to send GM Mark Paragua, GM Eugene Torre and Turin Olympiad top scorer FM Catherine Perena to Doha.

^what? does it mean that there are only three players (two males, one female) in the match play? ba't d na lang ginawang apat, which is the convention?
