    I hope whoever wrote that up gets properly informed right away. Surely they weren't thinking of the public being that uninformed.

    Regarding the installation fee, that's how it was with modems back then. When you're the only one on the block, they can afford to treat customers their way.

    I'm planing to get DSL for my home and the office in the near future. Are there anyone using this service currently? How's the bandwidth, congestion and other issues you've encountered so far? In essense is it worth the PhP2000(128kbps)-2500(256kbps) you're forking over to Manny P? Thanks

    Thought you guys might want a little update with my situation.

    Today I passed by the Alabang Town Center on my way home and lo and behold PLDT had a myDSL booth in the Activity Center in front of CPK and Tower Records. There I found a iMac hooked up to a Nokia DSL modem (Nokia sure knows how to design good looking modems ). Most importantly it was running the same MacOS version am using at home. I feel like crying for joy!!! :cry: :cry:

    For the bandwidth buffs out there I did some measurements using IE5's download manager. I started downloading Apple's iTune from Apple's server at a whooping 78 kilobytes/second!!!!!!!!. It eventually dropped to about 59-52 kilobytes/second. This is still plenty of fast compared to a dismall 5 kilobytes/second achieved on a 56K analog modem.

    For the few and the proud Mac users out there the dialer used on the strawberry iMac was "EnterNet".

    Note:This speed was achieved on a 256K Professional myDSL connection.

    Smile So far so good...[for you!]

    Well, good for you then.

    Just keep in mind that DSL modems use DSLAMs on the telco side.

    And, while DSL maybe fast from your home to your ISP...that may or may not be the case from your ISP to the rest of the Net.

    Still 78KB/s is pretty good-- :-)

    Sounds good.. How much per month? P2,000? That's the amount I pay for Home Cable. Downloading large files, I can usually make around 15 - 18k, so I'd say 78kb / sec or 5x times faster for the same price is pretty good!

  9. #29

    Wow! That's great speed. I hope they keep that up, even though when they'd be bombarded by users someday. Maybe next time you could do some more testing, like trying to download from "unknown" sites?

    Talking Clarifications...

    Pitok: I got to test the connection at a mall... not at home... I also browsed through the outside Internet (ie Apple Computers Website).

    Noisy Cricket: The price per month for the the connection I test is P2500. This is the myDSL Professional edition of PLDT that gives you double the speed of the low-end 128K but makes your phoneline unusable for simultaneous voice calls.

    ginoledesma: I promise.

    The earlier reported speeds of PLDT myDSL Professional (256K) is false. In reality a 256K connection can achieve 26+kilobytes/second and peak at 120+kilobytes/second. The connection at the PLDT DSL booth in the Alabang Town Center mall is a 512K. I got this info from the PLDT DSL Alabang Taskforce/Technicians who went to my house to hook me up.

    The meters I used to measure the speeds are built into Napster and PLDT's PPPoE client of choice "EnterNet"

    The supplied ADSL Bridge(Modem) is the Nokia M5122 shown below

    If you want a peak at the Administrator's Manual go here http://members.fortunecity.com/lowercase/NM5.pdf

    I just wish Napster would quit commiting a type 2 error... *sigh*

    Talking Can't get more than 20 KBps

    I've been using my DSL Pro (256k) for about 2 weeks now. Best I've gotten is about 19 to 20 kBps as in bytes. This should come out to about 160 kbps. I use MSN's http://msn.zdnet.com/partners/msn/ba.../speedtest.htm and http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ as my benchmarks.

    I wonder... Does the distance affect performance? I know this is a problem for Cable, but am not sure about DSL.

    Am using the same type of connection you're using snoboy. Early this morning I was downloading stuff off a T3+ connection from Napster and I was able to peak-out at 200 kilobytes/second. Thanks for the links. The following are the results of using snoboy's benchmarking sites.

    MSN.com
    Your line speed:
    282.7 Kbps
    34.6 K bytes/sec

    This was taken at 650PM Philippine Time.

    Bandwidth Place
    851 kilobaud
    831 kilobits / sec
    103.9 kilobytes / sec

    This was taken at 7:00PM Philippine Time.

    I'll try benchmarking tomorrow early morning.

    I have a theory on how PLDT DSL's system works. The Nokia ADSL Bridge(Modem) is not the limiting factor to how much bandwidth you are allocated. I think PLDT limits the speed on the server side of the service. This is based on the PLDT technician's claim that business-level connections use the same modem home users use. This sounds right seeming I'm rating more than 26kilobytes/second downloads.

    snoboy:If your computer uses "EnterNet" to connect to DSL you might want to check out the internal bandwidth meter to get a second by second update on how fast you're going at. Also if you're connection's not up to what you're expected then these might be the reasons behind it.
    • Electromagnetic noise (a.k.a. crosstalk) - this is created by other electronic devices (ie GSM cellular phones, unshielded speakers, microwave ovens)
    • PLDT's Central Office - the farther you are the lower your bandwidth will be.

    Take for example my case. PLDT states that you have to live within 4KM worth of copperwire away from the CO. According to the PLDT technicians I didn't qualify cause I lived over the limit but thanks to a neighbor I still got my connection. My neighbor requested for a node connected via fiberoptic which I live under a kilometer away from.

    If the first issue is the cause then removing the offending electronic device might solve your problem also you might want to check if your phonelines clean of static and other peculiar sounds. You can ask an electrician or PLDT to help you out with these issue.

    PLDT will be swinging around my place again to replace my shareware PPPoE client with a fullversion one. I'm thinking of ask them adjust my phoneline to remove the noise so hopefully I can get an even faster connection.

    ginoledesma: Distance does affect how fast your connection and if you qualify for the service.

    Cool inquiry regarding mydsl monthly fee!

    i hate my mydestiny cable internet, that's why i'm planning to switch to pldt mydsl, the monthly fee for mydsl-personal is P2,000 while mydsl-professional is P2,500. now, i just wanna ask if the 'adsl high-speed modem' that they would install is already covered by the monthly fee, 'coz it says that the initial payment would be the installation fee of P 1,500 + the monthly fee, and it doesn't say anything about renting or purchasing a modem or that it has a seperate monthly fee for the adsl modem.

    reply mga ppl please!

    Talking With a heavy heart...

    Hello Again,

    Before you get PLDT DSL service I think you should all read about the true nature of the service.

    Two Tuesdays ago I had the good fortune of PLDT connecting its DSL connection to my house. The difference compared to Dial-up was very dramatic. Downloads of up to 200 kilobytes/second were achieved.

    But as of late reality has finally sunk in. Since last Tuesday my account has been maxing out at only 21 kilobytes/second. You must be asking "Why has this happen to me?". Well I'll tell you why, PLDT was "testing" my line if it could achieve the much fabled 8 Mbps download/2 Mbps upload on my account. Well my line did pass. For those who are curious that kind of speeds are ment for corporations and are very expensive.

    I feel shock and disbelief that my first touch of broadband was just a "test". Anyway I've been checking/testing my bandwidth through out the day and it keeps stuck at 19-21 kilobytes/second.

    On a lighter note the Help Desk of PLDT is the most helpful and technically adept I've encountered in being online for 5 years. They were very accomodating in getting me to reality. They even gave me a conversion table for Internet connections.

    14.4kbps == 1.8 kilobytes/second(theoretical)
    28.8kbps == 3.6 kilobytes/second(theoretical)
    56.0kbps == 7.0 kilobytes/second(theoretical)
    128.kbps == 16 kilobytes/second(theoretical)
    256.kbps == 32 kilobytes/second(theoretical)
    512.kbps == 64 kilobytes/second(theoretical)
    1024kbps == 128kilobytes/second(theoretical)

    For the price, the service is sure worth it. But it wasn't what I was expecting though.

    Again I'm sorry for the misinformation and the confusion.

    *I don't know if it's right but they compute it by dividing kbps by 8.
    **My account is PLDT myDSL Professional (256kbps)

    Pepe:It's initially available in Makati, Pasig (Ortigas),Muntinlupa (Alabang) and San Juan (Greenhills).

    Yes, they are right.

    8kbps = 1KB/Sec

    where:
    kb = kilobits
    KB = KiloBytes
