I've been getting stories of miscarriages due to the ordinary headache drug "Cortal." Most of the women involved allegedly swallow 3 tablets or more in order to abort a fetus. How true is this?

Cortal is simply just aspirin. The only significant side effect of aspirins is that it "thins" the blood and may cause bleeding. That's the only reason why they don't advice pregnant women to use it. Otherwise, it's not an aboritifacient. Mixing it with 7-Up, whether warm or cold, is only likely to give you hyperacidity. The Cortal + 7-Up as abortifacient is just an old wives' tale.

Gad, there seems to be a software glitch, aaaargh. Dapat mauna ang 2nd post ni fallguy sa akin, ah.

You can hemorrhage if you O.D. on aspirin, of course, and it is possible to lose the baby from that, whether you are on your first trimester or during your last month of pregnancy. But let's say a pregnant woman takes an aspirin every couple of days because, say, she has a headache, it doesn't automatically mean she'll hemorrhage. But of course, being overly cautious by avoiding these kinds of medications during pregnancy is still best.

Quinine is an antimalarial drug. A predominant side effect is stomach irritation, and OD'ing on this may cause cinchonism, manifested as headache, nausea, visual disturbances, ringing of the ears, and dizziness. Other side effects include allergies, visual problems, seizures, confusion, cardiac problems, and bleeding problems. It is not really used as an abortifacient, but like many, many drugs, abusing this may cause abortion--in quinine's case, due to hemorrhage.

Cytotec is an antacid which has been found to have a side effect of uterine contractions and subsequent abortion. I don't think this is available in any legal drugstore anymore.

    Question

Given the fact that aspirin could cause bleeding especially on pregnant women, is it possible then that the indescriminate consumption of "Cortal" could lead to a miscarriage? (particularly to women 1-2 months pregnant)

What does bleeding mean? Is it Menstruation?

  9. #9
High-dose aspirin, while it may cause hemorrhage, does not cause the uterus to contract and abort the fetus. It may however cause complications in delivery and increase the risk of the mother to bleed in other parts of the body, not necessarily just intravaginally--the risk of bleeding in other areas are even higher. On the fetus, aspirin may cause liver problems, intracranial hemorrhage and non-closure of heart valves, among others, but while these complications may occur, it does not automatically cause abortion. So, as an abortifacient, it's not effective.

what are those high dose aspirins?

Doc Ira, my wife took Tylenol one time, I think this was when she was around 4-5 months pregnant. Do you think it will have some effect on the baby? Please reply cause I'm too worried.

Tylenol (Paracetamol) is generally safe for pregnant women. It's widely prescribed as a pain reliever for expectant women.

Daily intake of at least 300 mg. aspirin. This is, however, not absolute.
