Ryan sees contestant fireworks for 'Idol'

"American Idol" has had its share of drama over the course of four seasons, but much of that was the result of surprises in the audience voting. In the forthcoming fifth season, host Ryan Seacrest says, the contestants themselves may supply the theatrics.

"We just got done with some stuff this week that hasn't made it out yet," Seacrest said last week. "In terms of competitive spirit between the contestants, I think we've seen more drama, if you will, and more individual and independent competitive spirit than ever before."

In the past, Seacrest says, there was a sense of "political correctness" and politeness that pervaded the contestant pool. But with the show having made top-selling pop stars out of all four of its winners, a number of folks in the current "Idol" crop are just looking out for No. 1.

"You're going to see some personalities who are really gunning for that spot," Seacrest says. "They know exactly what they need to do to win, and they're not going to let anyone get in their way."

Seacrest is a busier man than usual of late, juggling his "Idol" work (the show premieres Jan. 17) with his daily L.A. radio show, the weekly "American Top 40" countdown and preparations for ABC's "New Year's Rockin' Eve" specials, which he's co-hosting with his idol, **** Clark.

"I have a lot on my plate, but I don't know how to operate without different things happening all at the same time, quite frankly," Seacrest says. "I'm probably one of the most neurotic people on the face of the earth, and I'm one of the busiest people in our business, but I operate better when I am."

At least he'll always have Simon. "Idol" judge and Seacrest nemesis Simon Cowell, who had been rumored to be leaving the show, signed a long-term deal recently to remain with the series for the rest of the decade.

Asked if he's "thrilled" that Cowell is remaining with "American Idol," Seacrest replies, "You're being sarcastic now, aren't you?" before allowing that he's "excited."

"People like 'American Idol,' they look forward to watching 'American Idol.' So if that means the show's going to be on for five more years, I think it's good for the fans, it's good for the young talent who want to get a break through the show, and obviously, if all of us get to stay on for five years, it's good for us."

AI has lost its appeal, at least, to me. I do not think that I could watch it again, as I used to. Perhaps, just to amuse and entertain myself sometimes, but to make it a habit, I am not completely convinced.

If there's one good thing that came out of my devotion religiously watching the show, it would be the undeniable fact that it paved the way for me to know, appreciate and love, Constantine. Well, I also like Bo Bice, for that matter.

Also it's been confirmed that the top 24 will be composed of [spoiler start] 12 guys & 12 girls lke AI 4 [spoiler end]

that's for sure. constantine has already promoted AI season 5 at ABC 5.

I have a feeling it will be a rocker. I don't think COwell would allow another country artist (like Carrie), POp artist (Like Kelly) R&B artist (like Fantasia) to win coz it will compete directly with the previuos idol winners.

huh? carrie is like the next big thing in US country music. Her album is selling like hotcakes in the US now (more than 1.5 million sold in 5 weeks or so).
