Thumbs down Filipina Charged for Murder (Singapore)

Read this:

And now, for my ranting:

Is this another blow to the Filipinos' already tarnished image here in Singapore? Why, a few years ago, a DH was sentenced to death with an unusually similar case.

To ask whether Aguilar was in her right state of mind when she was in the process of killing, is not the most important point here. I don't think she even had time to stop and think if what she was doing was something good and not to be regretted in the future (to her, for whatever reasons, it might have felt good that time, perhaps).

As a university student here in Singapore, I always try to shove and fight that nagging feeling that Singaporeans look down on me (and that includes the rest of other Filipino students and non-students alike) because of our (Filipinos) established "image"--nannys, maids, what have you--here. That's why I always try to excel in my course work and show these people that Filipinos can excel at anything, wherever they are.

Now, I am not saying that all our domestic helpers are to be blamed for this image and that they should go back home. No, not that. It's just unfair to think that as we try our best to prove the Filipino's excellence, here we are, pulled down again with just a single and very disappointing act of a fellow Filipino.

It's Monday morning tomorrow and I have an 8:30 AM class. Will this be a big issue? Will my Singaporean classmates talk about it? Talk about us? Heck, will the movie industry feast on this again and adapt a theatrical version? Who knows, really. I might just have to hide my Filipino accent for a while now.

The best lesson we could take from this so far? Never ever leave your prints behind when committing murder in a 687 sq km country where you have a centralized identification system bundled up with a very, very effective and strict police force--and that includes thinking about the sentence you might get if ever you're so unlucky enough to be apprehended.
