dump finley, he's no longer a necessary good to the team
It's not that he's not any good for the team, it's just that he is being paid more than his worth. They are still trying to find how to retain Fin and dump the luxury tax that goes with him...

mavs need a new big man

too bad for shawn bradley, he could have paired with pavel to make a new version of the twin towers...michael finley can also retire and be avery johnson's assistant coach so he'll still be with the mavs organization. he could help guys like marky daniels and devin harris mature even more to become solid players.i also heard they were going to get the lithuinian guy who was part of the team who beat the USA.. he could really help the mavs with his lethal outside shooting...finally i hope we can get a big man in time for the season..

Hahaha! Bradley and Pavel, the twin towers? Finley as an assistant coach?
Can I have some of that smoke?

And I can't believe someone's still masturbating over that Lithuanian PG. Didn't we learn from Arroyo that stellar play in the olympics doesn't necessarily translate to the NBA?

    I can see your point.

However, there were indeed some foreign-born players who recieved attention for their strong Olympic play - and went on to have solid NBA careers.

Sabonis, Marcuilionis, Kukoc, Ginobili, Dino Radja, et al.

On the other hand, there were are also some fabled Olympians that either didn't make the NBA or never became a factor when they were there. Guys like Andrew Gaze, Alexander Volkov, Zarko Palpaj, Jose Ortiz and Oscar Schmidt fit this description.

Jones is still playing wait game right now

Saint Joseph’s Dwayne Jones may not have been selected in the NBA draft Tuesday night, much to the chagrin of the many prognosticators who predicted he would, but that doesn’t mean he is out of options...

"(Dallas Mavericks head coach) Avery Johnson called after the draft, at around 12:30 a.m. to express his interest in D.J.," he said. "He obviously couldn’t guarantee anything contractually, but considering that he personally called D.J., I think that was a good sign. The Timberwolves also called later on."

The defensively challenged Mavericks’ fascination with Jones only makes sense. Because of past trades, Dallas didn’t have any draft picks this year, and beyond center Erick Dampier, it lacks an imposing rebounding and shot-blocking presence in the paint.

"Avery told D.J. that he’s been waiting since 1988 to hear his name get called," Dwayne Sr. said in jest of the coach who went undrafted, but won an NBA title with the San Antonio Spurs. "I think D.J. will wait 24-48 hours, though, before he decides on anything."...

I think that the Mavs will be a scary team come next season... with the departure of Center Bradley, the Mavs will make room for some rookie center. Now, I foresee that dallas is really starting to develop youngsters. Pandae, thanks for the updates! I hope Dirk will become a much mature player now than before...

Be careful of what you do. The Suns are already interested in Finley, therefore reuniting him with his former team and more importantly, MVP Steve Nash.

Be careful what you do. This isn't your older brother's Michael Finley. It's all about the game, not the name.

Finley is a goner, no doubt. But I kinda feel bad for him because he was once the franchise player for this team, and you gotta let him go. Well, if he wanted to stay he could have played better. But sadly, it didn't happen. I expect him to be in a Suns uni next season.

The NBA is a business and you must do whatever's in the best interests of the team. Fin's a good guy, nothing personal, but he's just dead weight.

And Cuban's not your ordinary owner -- he takes care of his players off-the-court. Popeye Jones still gets compensated by Mark even if he's technically a retired Golden State player. I'm sure Finley will get the same treatment when all is said and done.

Here's a scenario... What if Dallas trades Finley for a player who also has the same range of contract like Allan Houston of the NY Knicks, then both teams waive both players and sign them respectedly to their original teams for the minimum. Would it still nullify the luxury tax the CBA offered for waived players? Both teams retains their players and still pays the same amount to them but without the luxury tax since both of them are signed for the minimum... Is this loophole possible?

By the end of the day, the league still has to approve the trade and once they see that both teams are conspiring or trying to circumvent the rules, they will not only reject it, they might impose fines or strip teams of draft picks as well.

According to the DMN, Dallas will trade Finley to the East (where they've been getting a good amount of trade offers) because not only do they get rid of his salary, they also have the chance to acquire an asset in return. I don't know which teams are involved, but I sure hope it's Orlando -- I would love to have Cato and Christie here.

Cato and Christie? That would be a great addition to the team. I like Cato, I think he's under rated. He would be a great back-up at center. Christie would provide a defensive approach at the back-court for a team full of scorer type of guards.
As for Orlando, Finley would also be a nice addition to them since the departure of Mobley last year. The problem is, who's gonna play center for them? Francis, Finley, Hill and Howard will be a good tamdem with Turkgolu as the 6th man, but unless they find a replacement for Cato they would not go too far, plus I think their bench is a little shallow. Only Jameer and Battie are worth keeping.

Early last year, Orlando was pretty high on Cato - and for good reason. He was probably the magic's first true defensive presence inside the paint since the days of Ben Wallace. At first, Cato didn't disappoint, and was actually a solid performer in the first 3-4 months of the year (despite a malady of injuries). Later on though, Orlando's second coach last year (Jent) grew tired of Cato and eventually demoted him in favor of Battie.

As for Christie, he'll be a good addition to any team once healthy. Everyone knows about his defense and versatility, but not too many people talk about his height (6'7) and physique (extremely long arms) ... these are actually among his best assets.

Also, if he does end up in Dallas, he should allow JT to play some SG (his natural position) on a consistent basis. Reason being, Christie is a good ball handler and can actually play the role of a surrogate PG. He can also guard for the team's opposing SG's, and allowing the smallish JT to cover the opposing team's PG instead.

Weeks ago, there were talks that Orlando was seriously considering shifting Howard from PF to C. Since they're playing in the East, this might actually prove to be a good idea in the long term. This theory was further bolstered by the Magic's selection of Fran Vasquez (a narural PF) in last week's draft.

In the end, I think that if the Magic DOES go after Finley, then maybe they would offer Christie AND Battie inexchange. Reason being, Orlando's frontline of Howard, Garrity and Vasquez is too lithe for NBA standards, and the 270- pound Cato might be able to help them in this area.

    Just my .02

Christie's defense isn't as good as before, but it sure beats Finley. I like him because of the reasons you stated - he can play the point and has one of the highest b-ball IQ's in the league. If he doesn't pan out, his contract is up after the season along with Cato.

  19. #39
i doubt the magic will be willing to let go of both christie and cato just for finley. then again, we never really know.
