Watergate's "Deepthroat" unmaked Unmaked?
I don't think so. He revealed himself to his family and to others and to a lawyer. No one unmasked him.
I got to read the book "All the President's Men, and also saw the movie based on the same book released with the same title.
Then, the question that nagged me was - "Anong nag-motivate kay Deep Throat para magbigay ng ganoong info?"
The stream of articles that came up as an aftermath of the revelation answered my question. Sort of.
Apparently, Mark Felt resented the fact that Nixon appointed an outsider to head the NBI upon the death of Hoover.
Felt was described as ambitious and had shown his desire to be FBI's top man. Was himself the number 2 guy prior to the death of Hoover. But Nixon appointed an FBI outsider to replace the "legendary" Hoover.
Watergate was a lesson to politicians and public servants everywhere. In a free, open and democratic society, no one is above the law. Not even the President.
"Hello, room service? I think those men in the other room across from my window are looking for the light switch. They're walking about with flashlights." - Forrest Gump... ...well, something like that.![]()
I just came from the MSN site (homepage ko kasi) and read up on Mark Felt and his coming forward about his role in Watergate. Despite his request to Woodward and Bernstein na ilantad ang pangalan niya as Deep Throat after mamatay siya, he still went public himself. Obviously hindi natutuwa yung mga bata ni Nixon, gaya ni Nazi-lover Pat Buchanan and G. Gordon Liddy.
@oscar3: his becoming DT may have been born out of his bitterness of Nixon because of that. Hey, I'd feel the same too if I worked myself to the top all these years and when my time to shine is at hand, somebody else comes in and ruins the party.
@Siopao Man: that's so true. Kaya nga nanjan ang Fourth Estate eh.
It's a good thing he's still alive now that we know who the man behind Deep Throat is. And he doesn't have to be ashamed that it was dishonorable of him to have leaked information to Woodward and Bernstein. Quite the contrary, he should be proud of it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, But he was one of the alleged, back then when the scandal's in its peak, people who said to be "DeepThroat". He just didn't reveal his identity that time. I guess his family reveal him as "DeepThroat" only now because the statute of limitation expired.
it figures it would be a Jew that would betray Nixon
<"deepthroat" is such an old insultive code name how could you have been named like that? The birth of FBI has brought about, secret liquidations, scandals after scandals and lsd... Unlike USSS and the CIA that has been perfected from FBI's mistakes, now being just the third.>
"Deep Throat" is the title of an old porno film. Woodward and Bernstein artfully borrowed it (ahem) tongue in cheek.
Think about the implications of Mark Felt's actions. If Nixon had remained president, he surely would have escalated the US role in Vietnam. He was already sending B-52s to bomb neighboring Cambodia, who's to say he wouldn't have bombed Laos or even China? We would be fighting World War III right now if Nixon hadn't been brought downThe US bases in the Philippines would surely still be in US hands today, and possibly all of the Philippines would be in US control because it is such a strategic location for military operations in Asia. It is a chilling thought.
Ex-Prosecutors: 'Deep Throat' Broke Rules
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20050601/D8AF1OO80.html
Maraming nagaakala na si Deep Throat ang dahilan kung bakit nag-resign si Nixon. Actually - hindi. IMO.
What Deep Thoat did was gave information to Woodward that established the money trail directly leading to the people around Nixon. But only up to that.
Nixon had been successful in reasoning that he had no idea of what his people did, and he would not spare anyone who would be found liable. He was telling the truth- up to that.
With the involvement of people close to the President, a Senate inquiry was made. In the course of this inquiry, one high-ranking White House staff was asked a routine question if a wriiten record of every meeting involving the President is made. Part of the reply stated that some of the rooms in the White House have been installed with tape recorders to record said meetings and conversations.
Congress asked for the tapes. The White House objected. The matter was brought to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled that said tapes must be turned-over.
There the cover-up was discovered. It was for this cover-up that Nixon was to be impeached. A few days before a vote was to be made, Nixon's staff did a "head count". Alam nilang ma-i-impeach si Nixon. Inunahan niya ng resignation.
The tapes did Nixon in.
I doubt if Deep Throat even knew of the existence of the tapes.
by 1972 the war in Vietnam was winding down. In 1973 Nixon abolished the draft, and reduced the size of the military. He was a peacemaker.
McGovern is still calling for a draft and a larger army.
Nixon had no choice, he had to repeal the draft to win re-election. But I'm sure he would have found some excuse to re-instate it had he not had to resign the presidency. As you all know, politicians will promise anything to get re-elected.
