ABS-CBN plans employee retirement deal to cut losses

LOPEZ-controlled ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. (ABS-CBN) plans to offer early-retirement packages for its employees to cut down on expenses. It also plans to avoid exclusive contracts with talents to avoid higher costs.

This announcement was made during the annual stockholders’ meeting Thursday in response to the bleak economic condition that the company expects this year

“The economy is definitely slowing down. It’s going to be a difficult year this year,” Eugenio Lopez III, ABS-CBN chair said, adding this would put pressure on the company’s bottomline.

He said the company is facing a possible reduction of its revenues from advertisers.

The cut in advertising revenues would force the company to resort to belt-tightening measures which would necessitate early-retirement packages to interested employees.

“There would be a hard-nosed review of employees’ situation while there are already provisions [made] for early retirement,” Lopez said, indicating a number of employees are willing to take the retirement package.

The company plans to avoid exclusive contracts with talents, while excluding highly-paid talents in high-profile shows, according to Luis Alejandro, ABS-CBN president and chief operating officer.

He explained that talents who have big names such as the actress Judy Ann Santos would not need a huge soap-opera budget since she would be able to sell the show with or without the budget.

“It is important to make sure to maintain a broad talent base. It is also important to use different talents because of the sawa factor,” Lopez stressed.

Further, the company plans to strictly police its ranks in using the company’s resources, particularly call time and taping time.

Lopez said many of their employees arrive late for call times thus the delays in taping time. This forces the company to increase its expenditures for overtime.

This strategy, Lopez said, is a far cry from how the company coped in the previous years.

In the past, he said, there were no efforts to cut expenses.

The company is also dead set on recovering its losses in 2004 and regaining the top spot in Philippine television.

The company suffered a 25 percent decline in its net income for 2004. The company is also losing ratings to its biggest competitor, GMA Network.

To augment its losses, the company intends to improve its content and launch two new channels for children and men on free and cable television.

ABS-CBN would also be launching a 24-hour showbiz channel next year, to prime up its line up of shows on the ABS-CBN News Channel.

The company also intends to further its global reach by launching caravans starting June to Asian countries such as Japan and Hong Kong.
