elyserva : Arguing with a person who has an IQ below sea level is painful and pointless.

Libangan namin yan dito eh! May sariling tennis courts ang compound namin dati (live out na ako ngayon). Paglabas mo ng trabaho (hanggang 4:00PM lang) there is plenty of spare time. Ano ang gagawin mo? Competitive din ang mga tournaments dito na organized ng mga Pinoy. Halos walang pahinga ang mga tennis tournaments dito. Tuloy-tuloy ang mga tournaments all year round.Originally Posted by bludwid
Here's my take off on Graf. 24 is the record for most slams, if Steffi were able to match this, maybe she can be considered the greatest player.
That 24 won't be touched because there's so much depth in women's tennis nowadays. That's why we have 5 different women winning the last 5 slams.
I think Graf retired prematurely because she knows that she wouldn't be able to handle the new generation of power hitters, yes she's speedy and has that slice -without topsin, but it didn't even help her beat Davenport on grass who is not as athletic and as fast as her. Graf's game over the years never really developed. Just slice and dice and run around to hit a forehand as much as you can. I think she's too afraid to come to the net. Good thing she retired because there's no way she can out hit the players of today.
What if...
a) Monica Seles was never stabbed?
b) Jennifer Capriati never left the game?
How many GS titles would Graf have ended up with?... makes you wonder

The "what has" always outweighs the "what if"...
I don't think Steffi retired prematurely. 17 years as a pro and already 30. Sabatini, Hingis, etc retired much earlier. Arantxa I think retired earlier, too.
17 years of full-time, ligament-tearing tennis will take its toll. It means she's been pro since she was 13 or 14...
Obviously she won't be able to handle the power of the teenagers, all tendons and ligaments still intact. Plus I think it's her prerogative to retire while on top.
As I said, we can speculate all we want, but we'll never know. I thought Steffi was a lot more powerful than what people here assume. Her average first serve speed was in the 120's, and her second serve speed well above the 100's. If that's not raw power, I don't know what is. Sue Barker actually said during the Sabatini v Graf Wimbledon final "If Sabatini can lift a sofa, Graf can hurl it 100 yards..."
Most people here are also assuming that today's power hitters will whack their way and expect Graf to just watch the balls pass her by. She will bite back, you know.
Don't forget that Graf won at least 4 Grand Slam titles on EVERY surface. Against power hitters on clay, she'll hold her own... There's no such thing as a power hitter on clay.
And as I've said, Graf's best qualities are her footwork, shot timing and shot placement. It doesn't matter if you can hit 100mph groundstrokes - you're going to have to backswing. Steffi didn't give her opponents much swing time because she hit her shots early and full of top spin. I don't think Sharapova's backhand would have coped with Steffi's inside-out forehand topspin.
And I don't think you have to play tennis to be a good analyst. The best analysts, actually, are those who spend most of their time writing down stats and reading, than actually playing the game.
