Great entertainment at Martin-Pops concert, but why did Ai-Ai walk out?

    By Elton Lugay

Ludi de Asis Hughes, possibly the most prominent Filipina political fundraiser in New Jersey, was at front row clapping to the rhythm, tapping her feet and laughing at every campy joke dished out by Ai-Ai de las Alas.

She and thousands others turned out for the April 29 Martin Nievera-Pops Fernandez concert at Atlantic City’s Taj Mahal Casino, marking the musical comeback of the formerly married couple.

A self-confessed “diehard Martin fan,” Hughes said she enjoyed herself immensely. “’Be my Lady’ is my favorite number in the show,” said the founder of the Asian-American Chamber of Commerce in New Jersey.

The “Three’s Company” concert, which set the mood for some faux flirting by the ex-spouses, was a success based on the FilAms who were there.

“Seeing Martin and Pops together was a special moment,” said Miguel Braganza, a director-choreographer. “Ai-Ai was a riot.”

Realtor Corazon Rivera who came with a dozen of her friends said she was touched by the couple’s “sweetness” on stage, reminiscent of a time in their youth when they were the Philippines’ top pop duo. “I was touched by what Pops has told of Martin that she can only remember the beautiful things her ex-husband and her have shared together. I admire her for saying that, it takes a lot of courage to say that,” she said.

Pageant producer Danny Pagsambugan said the couple showed utmost professionalism on stage, and “didn’t have inhibitions cracking jokes about each other.”

While many may want to see them reunite in real life and create more beautiful music together, Martin shot down that thought, telling The FilAm, “Magkakabalikan kami only in concert.” Both are now married to other people, and Martin’s wife is not in showbiz.

    Ai-Ai de las Alas
The event was marred by Ai-Ai stomping out when security hustled her boyfriend out of the ballroom during a meet-and-greet. The circumstances were not clear, but this happened as the comic was signing autographs.

“He’s my boyfriend,” yelled the Comedy Concert Queen at least five times.

The security didn’t budge. The furious Ai-Ai slapped the table to everyone’s surprise, stood up and rushed to chase her man. Everyone thought it was part of an act, Ai-Ai known for her racy, often off-color humor. Until Martin and Pops called for help and producer Anna Puno came out. Some 20 minutes later, all’s well and Ai-Ai was reunited with her boyfriend.

Said Maria Ferrone of Paterson School in New Jersey, “Ai-Ai provided a lot of comic relief.”

The musical numbers of Martin and Pops – duet and solo – brought back a lot of good memories for many FilAms in the audience, said Dennis Sy, who provided backup vocals. Songs like “Each Day With You,” “How Can I” and “Be My Lady” brought tears to some.

Martin and Pops “epitomize the best in world-caliber talent in the field of music and entertainment that the Philippines has to offer,” he said.

The concert was produced by Manila-based Star Media Entertainment, with Bing Gabriel of MPG Productions — a friend of Hughes — as line producer. It was directed by Vic Perez and Lorrie Ilustre, both from Los Angeles.

Starstruck in Manila: OPM at MoA

Saturday, June 16, is a night I shall not soon forget. Many, many stars were gathered under one roof for a special concert produced to formally launch the Mall of Asia Arena, a spanking brand-new multipurpose venue in the metropolis—yes, the one where Lady Gaga drove a motorcycle across the stage, the Philippine flag flapping behind her.

The roster of artists that performed consisted something of a casting coup on the part of the production team. In no particular order, let me see if I can name them all:

Basil Valdez, Jose Mari Chan, Freddie Aguilar, Martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano (via a special videotaped performance shown on a huge screen), Verni Varga, Dulce, Regine Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid, Jed Madela, Juris, Piolo Pascual, Richard Poon, Arnel Pineda, The CompanY, Christian Bautista, Erik Santos, Bamboo, Pokwang, Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola, Rachel Alejandro (who pitched in for Zsa Zsa Padilla, who bowed out at the last minute for very understandable personal reasons), and the G Force Dancers.

The concert was hosted by Pops Fernandez and Jim Paredes. Musical director was Maestro Ryan Cayabyab, who conducted the newly formed ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra

HOURS before show time (from left): Basil Valdez, Ryan Cayabyab and Jose Mari Chan pose for a snapshot.

(resident musical director and conductor is Gerard Salonga). Director was Johnny Manahan.

The flow of the show was very tight, much to my delight. The hosts kept things moving smoothly from one song number to the next, and the next, and the next. From production numbers to solos and duets … tributes to the still-living and breathing creative forces that wrote much of the music performed that night … and accompanied by one of this country’s finest orchestras with a master at the helm.

However great the show turned out to be, though, I have to say that rehearsals were far more fun. Well, for us anyway.

I’m a sucker for well-performed OPM (Original Pilipino Music), and that afternoon’s final rehearsals at the MoA Arena jettisoned me into a special kind of heaven. Many of the performers were people I watched on television as I was growing up, or performers I had grown up with as we made the rounds of television shows, live concerts and whatever else was going on back in the day. And the best part was, none of these veterans showed any signs of age or deterioration. I’m convinced that there must be something in the air, or the water in this country.

    Audience members

REAL-LIFE couple Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez rehearse a duet. Photo courtesy of Eloisa Matias

As audience members outside of their numbers, the performers were in the front section … many sat together, others in solitude. However, the collective reaction from the entire hall once a performer was finished (or even while singing) was generous and hearty. There was a lot of screaming and clapping. In short, it was probably the best audience anyone could ask for, very vocal in its appreciation.

Although I enjoyed everyone and everything, I do have my favorites: Freddie Aguilar singing “Anak”; Jose, Wally, and Pokwang making that whole arena shake with laughter; watching Ogie and Regine sing a few of their hits (it was just so great to see her on stage again); Jed belting out his solo with a voice that never lost its boom no matter how high it got; Juris’ pristine and clean vocal quality; Arnel crooning Side A’s “Hold On”; Dulce just being Dulce; and seeing Piolo’s performance jump upwards in quality from rehearsal 1 to rehearsal 2, given who he was singing with (Jed, Richard and Juris).

It was just so much fun to feel the wheels turning in his head. Oh yeah, and seeing my brother stand up in the audience when he was introduced. That’ll never get old.

It was a special night, one that is now extremely rare in the local entertainment scene, when a large cache of the best singers this country has ever bred are brought together to perform

BRANDISHING cameras, fans swarm the stage to capture this rare moment on the local music scene. Photo courtesy of Moy Ortiz

in concert. There were singers from the two larger television networks under one roof. I just about thought that the roof would cave in, because this just doesn’t happen anymore. And that’s very sad.

Once upon a time, shows like “Icons” at the MoA Arena were commonplace. Every few weeks or even every few months, there would be a concert or an event that placed many great voices together. There were no TV network clashes, no having to move heaven and earth, just a bunch of performers coming together for shows. Now, occasions like this one are few and far between, so just how incredibly special, rare and wonderful that night turned out to be was a blessing. It certainly wasn’t lost on any of us, and I’m hoping the audience enjoyed the show.

I pray for another gathering of stars. So many were unable to join us due to their own hectic schedules or previous engagements. I wish for it only so they can join in the fun, the craziness, and the laughter a show like this can bring.

Three of Philippine’s finest performers graced the University of Guam field house June 8 in a night full of song, excitement, and laughter.

Concert King Martin Nievera, Concert Queen Pops Fernandez, and Comedy Concert Queen Ai-Ai de las Alas brought the acclaimed the high-energy show “Three’s Company Concert” to Guam as part of the island’s celebration of the 114th anniversary of Philippine Independence.
The concert led off a weekend full of events to celebrate Philippine Independence.

The audience eagerly awaited the start of the show and exploded when Nievera stepped on stage.
For almost two hours, the three in-demand artists performed back-to-back repertoires.
Nievera, who began his career in the early 1980s, captured the hearts of the audience performing a catalog of hits from the more than 30 albums he’s released in his career.
His famed singles “Be My Lady,” “Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin” and other medleys were heart-warming and brought many on a smooth ride to yesteryear.

Fernandez sent out high-energy vibes as she graced the stage, rocking the hits of Michael Jackson and other famed rock stars.
Adorned in a bright red gown, Fernandez captivated the audience and proved that after all these years she’s still a top notch performer.
Audience members hopped up and joined her in song as she sang the Pointer Sisters “Jump (for my Love).”
“It’s been a while since artists have been able to get the audience up on their feet and participate during a concert,” says Filipino Community of Guam president Leah Beth Naholowaa.
Never failing to impress, Comedy Concert Queen Ai-Ai de las Alas surprised the crowd as she came out, at first, in a long black, silky robe and ended up in a tube-topped dress that brought everyone to laughter.
Her wit and humor provided the cherry on top of the fabulous “Three’s Company Concert.”
Among her more popular jokes was one about how peculiar it was that most of Guam’s houses had flat-topped roofs, joking that the houses were lacking a sense of “style.”
To her surprise, she realized that the reason for these flat-topped roofs was for typhoon protection.
The Philippine singing group “Aegis” served as de las Alas’ inspiration as she belted out to some of the high notes of this group’s songs.

Martin to Pops: 'It was still all about you'

MANILA, Philippines – Martin Nievera, dubbed as the Philippine music industry’s "Concert King," turned emotional during a production number on “ASAP 2012” on Sunday.

Nievera is celebrating his 30 years in the business and he was serenaded by his “ASAP” co-stars.

But what brought Nievera to tears was when he sang Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson’s “Maybe” with former wife Pops Fernandez, who were then joined by their two sons, Robin and Ram, much to Nievera’s surprise.

Nievera, who was obviously moved when he saw his sons, cried unabashedly and hugged Robin almost throughout their song.

Fernandez said she was surprised over Nievera’s reaction because she rarely sees her former husband cry on television.

“I got scared. This is the first time I’ve seen you cry. I don’t know what to say. I’ve seen you cry a lot of times in front of me [but] not in front of them,” she said.

She then wished Nievera a happy 30th anniversary and wished him more years in the music industry.

Nievera’s sons Robin and Ram also congratulated their father for his showbniz success.

“I’ve started singing 3 years ago, and I’m already having such a hard time. I don’t know how you’re doing it at 30. It’s different with you because you get better every year. He doesn’t look 50, he doesn’t sound 50 and he still sings better than I do. So congratulations Dad, I love you,” said Robin.

“Thirty years is big, I can’t even imagine it myself because it’s not the career I chose. I can’t even feel the way that you feel right now. I’m really happy for you,” Ram said.

Meanwhile, Nievera explained to Fernandez why he was not able to stop his tears.

“All the good and the bad years were with you. Even when you’re not with me, it was still all about you and this family. You learn from your mistakes. You move on, you grow up but the one thing I can safely say is that in my 30 years in the business, this was my biggest achievement right here (family),” he said.

Friends Aiko Melendez and Pops Fernandez "taking their time" when it comes to their lovelife

Parehong single ngayon ang magkaibigang Pops Fernandez (left) at Aiko Melendez (right), pero hindi naman daw sila nagmamadali."We’re taking our time this time around," sabi ni Aiko. Pabirong sabad naman ni Pops: “Ako, I’m not taking my time, pero wala lang talaga.”
    Photo: Noel Orsal

Niña sa Cultural Center of the Philippines noong July 24.

Balak din ba nilang gumawa ng indie movie in the future?

"We’re planning. Siguro, I’ll be part of it. She’s my line producer,” sagot ni Aiko, sabay turo kay Pops.

May new soap din, so I have to get back in shape again,” sabi ng magaling na aktres.

Kamakailan nga lamang ay nag-produce sila ng celebrity golf tournament for a cause.

“Si Pops ang bago kong lovelife—she should know!” natatawang sabi ni Aiko.

Na sinundan naman ni Aiko ng:“We’re taking our time this time around.”

Pabirong sabat ni Pops: “Ako, I’m not taking my time, pero wala lang talaga.”

Tugon ni Pops, “Nowadays, that is no such thing naman, di ba, it doesn’t really matter.”

Dagdag ni Aiko, “Age doesn’t matter, 'no? When you’re in love, you’re gonna be in love with the right person, in the right time, no age requirements.”

CD reviews: Linkin Park 5.0, Robin Nievera

    Robin Nievera, "Overwait"

Robin Nievera, the eldest son of Martin Nievera and Pops Fernandez, says he wants OPM to grow and he makes the statement stick in “Overwait,” his debut album of all-original compositions.

Right at the opening track entitled “In 3’s,” Nievera expounds on his mission of creating fresh music by channeling the spirit of John Mayer’s blues trio into pop-rock territory.

In “Beautiful”, he tints his bluesy yearnings in undulating trip-hop, while “Sound Tripping” starts in a grungy mood then shimmies into a soulful swing. “Sing Along” finds Nievera and company at the cusp of a full-on rocker. The “pop” lies in the infectious hooks the young Nievera coaxes from his guitar and the “rock” issues from the crack backbeat dished out by his backing band of close associates.

Collectively, the songs on “Overwait” take a different road than the one taken by his parents. Nievera produced the recent one-off reunion EP of his parents and if it’s any indication, he has the knack of producing good music for other people too.

For instance, “Smile”, which appears on both albums, is an R&B crooner on “Reunion” and a heartwarming ballad on “Overwait”. He can turn out tasty slices from the same bacon.

Now that the long wait is over, Robin Nievera is ready to send out his messages of love for original Pinoy music.

Biglang napuno ang backstage when it was their turn to be called to perform.

SUCCESSFUL at star-studded ang katatapos na 4th PMPC (Philippine Movie Press Club) Star Awards for Music held last Sunday at the Meralco Theater.

    Idols, Icons Invade Yokohama Japan

Filipinos in Japan rode buses, bullet trains, and flew domestic flights to Yokohama last weekend just to see their favorite stars.

Christopher de Leon, Pops Fernandez, Allan K, Lovi Poe, Laarni Lozada, and Kapamilya stars Ariel Rivera, Yachang and I stormed The Land of the Rising Sun to strut our wares and entertain the Pinoys there.

Christopher de Leon is the founder of my Catholic Community, Oasis of Love, so I was having a hard time adjusting to him singing "This Thing Called Love" and "Tutti Frutti" instead of "Lift Up Your Hands" and "Majesty."

In fairness to my mom's idol, he's still got the chops and women were screaming all over the park - now that's an icon.

Another childhood idol of mine who performed was "Concert Queen" Pops Fernandez who sang a rather slow number in "Don't Say Goodbye." She is still as beautiful and as sexy as I remember watching her in "Penthouse" with Martin Nievera when I was a kid.

My "Comedy Idol" Allan K took the energy level several notches higher with his antics. It was also refreshing to see new faces like Laarni Lozada and Lovi Poe. Surprisingly, Lovi performed an old song, "Hot Stuff," older than my generation, so I decided to give a newer song to the crowd by performing my comedy version of Adele's "Rolling In The Deep."

The awarding and tributes were made more special and meaningful dahil ang mga anak mismo ng music icon-awardees ang nag-perform.

THE NIEVERAS. Dalawang lalaki ang naging anak nina Pops and Martin Nievera—sina Robin at Ram.

Paalala ni Martin sa anak, “First of all, those carefully watching you tonight are the cream of the crop of the press. And they’re here to make or break you.

“But the most beautiful thing that they do best is, if you honor them with your good works, they will honor you right back.

“Thank you so much for this great honor. There are a few words to say.

“All I can say is receiving any part of recognition, at this day and age, is one of the most beautiful feelings one can ever share with their children.”

Between the two, si Pops ang mas maraming nasabi sa thank-you speech niya.

“Maraming maraming salamat po sa PMPC.

"It’s always a wonderful, great feeling everytime we get recognized, no matter how long we’ve been part of the business.

Patuloy niya, “I want to thank PMPC... siyempre, I’m such a proud parent, for giving Robin his very first award. Salamat!

“And I’m watching these wonderful, talented kids... parang ano ba ang ibig sabihin noon, Ms. Kuh?

“Is it a sign that they should make money na lang for us? What do you think?” birong tanong ni Pops.

“And these guys, they’re so talented, ako mismo nagulat!

"Congrats Isabella, Paolo... and my pride, Robin!” pagtatapos ni Pops.
