I am on my last year in Ateneo and I still feel so bloody stressed out! Nandiyan pa rin ang dread kung gagraduate o hinde.

Looking back, I dunno how I managed to survive each semester. Ang daming nasisipa! One out of five per batch gets kicked out. And Ateneo doesn't even care about this freakin ratio!

Why is it that I feel that we Ateneans have so much workload compared to other schools? Don't get me wrong on this. I'm not implying that other schools are lax on their students...but sometimes I get the impression na ang dami naming trabaho compared to others. I have friends from other schools and they don't seem to be as stressed.

Is it all in my mind or what?

What's your course Ice Burn? You're probably an ME student or something just as difficult. Just take it a little at a time. If you are a senior, then by Feb, you will hardly have any load left. Iilang araw na lang yan!!!

As for the workload, be happy that this early on, you are already being trained to handle a ton of stress. Oks lang yan, once you take a high pressure job then you will realize what stress really means. Trust me, if you are aiming high, it doesn't get any easier.

Just learn how to schedule your time. You'll get the hang of it.

I'm currently taking up Bio in Ateneo... sheesh... Pero I'm glad na up til now I still haven't changed my mind about going into med school... *sigh*

    Ice Burn... good luck

Denise`, while med school was hard, it's loads of fun, too, because of the people you'll be with for the next 5 years. So don't worry about it.

    Ice Burn: What's your course?

    --

I think part of the reason why you feel that way is that there are just so many core subjects. Well, I heard they changed the curriculum already (am I right?), but basically, they're the same. Imagine, everyone had to take 15 units of english, 15 units of natsci, 12 units of history, 15 units of theology, 8 units of PE ( ), 6 units of pinoy, 6 units of foreign lang ( ), 3 units of SA, 3 units of Psych, 16 units of philo (!), plus of course math (well, 24 units for track B - arghhhh!). Of course that list does not even include your major subjects (3 ecos, 2 accountings, finance, 2 ORs from hell - arghhhhhh!) ! It also doesn't help that the core subjects are treated like they're major subjects, geez, even Philo has more weight (4 units) than other core subjects (mostly 3 units).

Don't worry, you're not the only one who feels that way. Until now, when I really think about it, I dunno how I survived all that. When you're working already, you're gonna use everything you've learned about handling stress, meeting deadlines, and juggling everything, even more than the lessons that you have learned.

Just concentrate on your last sem, enjoy being with your friends, enjoy being with your cool teachers, enjoy the campus. You will SURELY miss everyone and everything after you graduate.

Oh yeah, after grad, don't work right away. Take a vacation. Months, not just weeks. Trust me on this.

hello, i'm a junior chem major.

caramba: i was reciting that list to ppl from up and ust the other day. it's now 9 units pinoy.

science majors have two units of laboratory to go with some 3-unit lecture courses. this sem, my lab class entails 5 hrs. in the laboratory and an additional 7 hrs. or more writing a lab report. it's like writing a major philo paper (or worse) every week!!!

My course is AB SOS. Before any of you say it's easy as compared to the Mgt courses, it's not. I also minor in PolSci and Comm. I have to do term papers every week. Solving math prolems sometimes feels like a snap than doing term papers every week. If I compile all the crappy papers I have written, I can probably publish a very thick book.

What I feel stressed about is that I always seem so get sucky teachers no matter what I do. It's because of that Damn lottery system.
Anyway, the lower batches have it much luckier with their new curriculum.

The new curriculum goes as follows:
    12 units english
    9 units fil
    9 units theo
    12 units philo
6 units math (track b) though some wala nang ma 12, diretso ma 17 (calculus)
    12 units math (track a)
    8 units natsci
    3 units foreign lang
    3 units sa
    3 units psych
    9 units history
    the rest mga majors

Plus they only get 15 units per sem

They are so lucky! Tapos ang dami pa rin nasisipa. Weird noh?

I wish I could double major in either Comm or Polsci, but I'm having problems dahil they dunno whether to put me in the new curriculum or old curriculum. If they put me in the old, certain subjects will no longer be offered. Kung sa new naman, mas marami akong majors na kukunin. They are so indecisive! Kaya I'm stuck with a minor.

Anyway, I'm counting the days till I graduate, ayoko nang makakita ng term paper for as long as I live!

    Ice Burn,

A 20% mortality rate in Ateneo isn't out of the ordinary. I think my batch (1994-98) started with 1200 and that got knocked down to 900 by senior year (number of people in the yearbook). That's 25%!

Besides, I wouldn't want to be in an institution that demands any less of its students. Believe me, this sense of achievement does pay off when you try to get a job or go entrepreneurial.

The reason why so many people get kicked out could be simple attrition. When you have more than 1600 freshmen in a batch, there is a need to decrease the population.

It boggles the mind to fathom why the Ateneo is accepting so many students, only to see them removed after a while.

On your point about being more stressed than other schools, to a certain extent that's true. Other schools have less pressure to finish after 4 years. It's easy to drop difficult subjects or shift around. Sometimes the tuition is affordable enough to warrant doing such.

This is not the case in Ateneo. There's a bit of social pressure to finish with your batchmates in 4 years, as well as the fact that extending your stay in Loyola Heights at P25K per semester is no joking matter.

I hope you can hurdle the last mile before graduation.

    - Mikoid

Hey Ice Burn, I sympathize but in med school (ask Ira and Grumpy) we put in 100 hour weeks (working and studying for 5 years)! I finished that only to spend 6 years in training. Oh and along the way, I've taken 7 board level exams!

  11. #11
Wow, they really cut the units! Just compare the numbers!

Ice Burn: Don't worry, I'm not gonna say that you have it easier than the Management people. Wangie took up AB SOS and boy, you do have a lot of papers to make. Also, you also have the same core subjects. Anyway, good luck and do well!

batang uliran: Don't worry, we're not taking that away from you. I know Med school is harder, kanya-kanyang hirap lang talaga. Yeah, we don't give in as many hours as you guys, but it's compensated with all those ****** management subjects. (I still don't understand why we had to take up OR, I mean geez, the computer can do the computations! I really hate that subject. Sorry, I digress...)

You know what's weird? Ateneo is starting to overcharge. My sister is w/ the new curriculum and her load is 15 units/per sem...She paid P31,000.00 last sem. While, I have 19 units then I only paid P28,000.00 kasama na yung diploma and yearbook.

Grabe! Mga switik yang mga heswita!
Did you know they plan to give a P2000.00 increase each year? Sheesh, by the time magka-anak na ako, wala na...Ubos na ang pera ko sa tuition.

I sympathize with all those med students out there...But try to look back at your previous college degrees if it were so stressful...Good luck na lang sa inyo survive the med world!

    u have said it Caramba
philo->;sobra hindi ko maintindihan ang point ng philo
theo->; is it suppose to make u feel more holy?
    history->; walang kuwenta
    psych->; cute yung teacher!
okay lang yung mga majors pero ang core subjects sobrang dami at kailangan na pagpaguran mo kaysa sa majors funny!

    correction:

    the new curriculum has:
    12 units of theo (121, 131, 141, 151)
    8 units of nasci plus a sci10

    piwi01,

core subjects were designed to make Ateneans well-rounded students.

  15. #15
piwi, I was griping about the load, but the subjects are fine. Actually now that I have graduated, I'm very grateful that I took all those subjects, especially Philo - all of them, even Fr. David Philo.

Ice Burn: i should know... pol sci major rin ako....nasusuka na ako sa mga readings, well nasa ateneo tayo eh, anong magagawa natin, buti nga hindi pa na compromise yung quality noong batch natin eh....

yikes may paper pa ako kay TR and test kay Cook and Mendoza sa fri...arghhh...buti na lang tapos na yung tejodi kanina....

speaking of teachers who have mountains of reading material (fr. david, being the king!) I remember Dr. Hansen (he left just this sem) and I took 2 subjects under him last sem...syllabus pa lang 25 pages na...scary!!! di ko rin alam pano ako nagsurvive dun...

    chez-o:

Come to think of it, I dunno how I survived one sem of Salvador (PolSci 171) and Hansen (PolSci 127)...Sheesh, they really pile it up, don't they? Wala na si Hansen...Cheap siya sa grade...Bwiset!

Tejido ka rin pala...Don't worry about him. Just memorize the damn thesis statements and you'll do fine. I took him last sem and this sem. He gives lots of A's.

You shouldn't have taken David. P1000.00 in readings na yung nagastos mo noh?

  19. #19
To all the David students out there... WOW! Bilib talaga ako sa inyo!

Would it interest you to know that i know 2 ppl who actually took David in the summer?

  20. #20
Fr. David for the summer? All those handouts, more than one-foot high, in two months? I can NOT imagine.

Well, I survived "The Republic" using booknotes. There was NO way I was gonna read all that.
