Cebu tops Asian BPO hub; Makati slides — survey

A global survey on preferred business process outsourcing (BPO) sites has stricken off Makati City, where the local BPO boom started, among top Asian BPO cities but named Cebu as the top outsourcing hub in Asia.

The 2008 global outsourcing list of Tholons, a strategic advisory firm for global outsourcing and investments, ranked Cebu City as the top Asian outsourcing city, followed by Shanghai and Beijing in China.

Three other Philippine cities — all in Metro Manila — are included in the top 18 Asian outsourcing cities: Pasig, Quezon City and Mandaluyong.

Makati Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado said it was unfortunate that the country’s acknowledged financial capital is losing out in the BPO boom.

Mercado admitted Makati’s business support services have deteriorated, turning off many investors, including BPO firms.

“Makati needs to regain its competitive edge. The private sector is looking to the city government to institute programs to attract BPO investments. Sadly, city hall does not seem to realize the urgency of the problem,” Mercado said.

APPROXIMATELY 60% OF THE INFORMAL SETTLERS CAME FROM CENTRAL LUZON, SOUTHERN TAGALOG, CAGAYAN VALLEY, AND THE BICOL REGION. 40% OF WHICH CAME FROM VISAYAS AND MINDANAO. THERE IS STILL AN UNKNOWN PERCENTAGE REGARDING VAGRANT INFORMAL SETTLERS. THIS IS DUE TO THE FACT THAT MOST INFORMAL SETTLERS ARE BELOW-POVERTY LINE AND THUS, THEY WOULD OPT A FASTER AND CHEAPER WAY GOING TO THE CAPITAL CITY."

LOL.....ITS VERY CLEAR THAT CEBU CITY HAS A RELATIVE SMALL POPULATION DESPITE THE FACT THAT SOME PEOPLE COMING FROM MINDANAO AND OTHER REGIONS IN THE VISAYAS WORK IN CEBU CITY, THUS, 60,000 BPO EMPLOYEES IS 7% OF THE TOTAL POPULATION OF CEBU. PLEASE DO COMPARE 500,000 AGAINST 60,000 AND SEE WHO HAS A HIGH NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES IN THE BPO SECTOR? IS JUST THAT IN RELATION TO METRO MANILA POPULATION, ITS ONLY 2%.
So how about the 40 percent of informal settlers where did they come from? Cebu must be thankful to manila for having the burden of being the capital city imagine if cebu is the capital city and people from luzon will be going there and looking jobs I don't think your city is ready for that.

Big question here is, if jobs there in cebu are very much sufficient how come that there are cebuanos here in every work level from street vendor to managers. Ask 10 of your friends there if their children have yayas you will rarely find a yaya who came from here but If I will ask 10 of my friends here I'm sure 4 to 6 of those yayas came there if not from other provinces in the south.
