So you want to be a DJ?

The life of a disc jockey isn't all fun and games, folks. If you're into the high-profile, non-stop, hectic lifestyle, perhaps you might consider becoming a DJ.

The first step is deciding where you'd like to go. Good luck getting a job at any of the Big 5 stations (RT, RX, TM, KC and WRock), if you're going for the AB market; LA, K-Lite, Cross-Over 105.1 and CityLite are also good AB stations. FE, if you're classical. If you'd like to go BC, try WRock. If you're really looking to make money and sell out, go LSFM, YESFM or StarFM.

Second, you gotta decide how to market yourself. Don't clone yourself after established DJs like Chico and Del or Joe Schmoe. These guys have logged in years in the business, something you can only do with experience. Just be yourself and you'll find you'll get ahead quicker.

Third, make a voice tape and press the flesh. Call the stations and get the names of program directors. Don't ask if there are openings; that would be cheap. Package your tape nicely with a cover letter and a good resume. Take the initiative.

If they like you, they'll ask you to report for an audition and live reading. The only advice there is not to be nervous. Just read clearly and confidently. Be conscious of your reading speed.

Don't be discouraged, though, if at first, you don't succeed. Life in media isn't for the fainthearted or frail, y'know. Good luck!
