    How To Beat Underarm Blues

By Pierra Calasanz-Labrador for Yahoo! Southeast Asia

Oh, armpits. Though it's essential to sweat through them to regulate our body temperature and flush out toxins, our underarms can be a source of daily inconvenience and major insecurity. Not to mention, it can hamper our fashion choices (to sleeveless or not to sleeveless? That is the question!).

Based on a "Beauty Understanding Survey Report" across parts of Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, 96% of women care about their underarm appearance. More than half rank their underarms as one of the three body parts they are unhappiest about; and more than 8 out every 10 women consider their underarm condition before choosing clothes to wear or buy. In order to overcome this concern, here are some tips to avoid armpit woes:

    Your hair removal routine

There's nothing more embarrassing than raising your arms in public, only to realize (after everyone else does), that you failed to shave your pits. Die! To avoid this earth-swallow-me-now sitch, stick to a regular hair removal routine.

Shaving is the cheapest option; however, when you shave, you're basically shaving a third of your skin! Regular shaving disrupts the natural skin rejuvenation cycle by exposing new skin cells too early, leading to dry and damaged skin. If shaving is your choice of hair removal, be sure to use a super gentle, moisturizing deo that doesn't further irritate skin and lead to skin darkening.

Don't like the "chicken skin" or stiff stubble from shaving? Try waxing. Though it's a little more time-consuming and costly, waxing helps keep your pits smooth, makes your skin appear clearer (the undergrowth from shaving can look like dark skin), and hair grows back softer and more fine. If you're sensitive to pain, waxing can sting a bit.

Plucking is actually pretty popular with Pinays since you can do it at home and regrowth time is longer than with shaving, though pulling out armpit hair one by one takes a lot of patience. You can also D-I-Y with ouch-free depilatories, though they can be a messier alternative.

    Dark underarms a problem?

Dark pits may be the result of dead skin cells trapped in the layers of your skin. Remedy? Use a gentle exfoliant every week to slough away dead skin cells (but beware: sometimes overzealous scrubbing can irritate your skin and end up darkening your skin, too!).

The chemicals in some heavy-duty anti-perspirants can cause skin darkening, so go for a gentler brand. You may also be sensitive to scented deodorants, so go for unscented variants, or try alternative natural remedies (some girls swear by tawas or baking powder; but be sure to test its effectivity at home first).

If your underarms remain disturbingly dark, it may be a case of hyperpigmentation, and it's best to ask a dermatologist for advice instead of experimenting yourself.

    Hello, sweat stains

Do you dread the slightest physical exertion in fear of super wa-poise sweat stains? Make sure your deodorant also says "anti-perspirant" on the label so you can stay confidently dry, whether you're stressing over a presentation or shopping in a tiangge with your friends. Remember though, that we're meant to sweat to flush out our toxins, so try to go au naturel (or stick to plain deo) when at home.

    Fighting B.O.

When you just hit puberty and your hormones are going haywire, it's borderline acceptable to smell like a locker room. When you still suffer from body odor as an adult, even the most ordinary things can be arduous: holding onto the handrail in the MRT, passing the salt, or even sitting next to your crush. But you can't live with your hands pinned to your sides forever! Here are some tips to combat B.O.:

    • Armpit hair is the nasty place where sweat and bacteria can intermingle and produce a love child otherwise known as that funky smell. Be sure to practice good hygiene by bathing daily (preferably with a mild, anti-bacterial soap), and keep your pits hair-free if possible.

    • Make sure you dry your armpits well after a bath before applying your underarm product (just pat gently with a towel—never scrub, or you'll irritate your skin).

    • Choose a deodorant/anti-perspirant combo that keeps you from sweating profusely, is gentle on your skin, and subtly masks your womanly funk.

    • If your deodorant actually intensifies your B.O, switch to an unscented version.

    • Your preference for spicy food may be contributing to your "pungent" smell, (curry-scented sweat, anyone?), so you may have to adjust your diet, and be sure to drink lots of water to flush out toxins.

    • Wear light, airy fabrics that let your skin breathe and doesn't trap body odor.

Roll-on, spray, stick? Anti-perspirant, deodorant or both? It all boils down to your needs and personal taste. If you sweat profusely or suffer from body odor, roll-ons and sticks seem to give more "coverage" and thus, more confidence. But the spray is a fashionista favorite because it doesn't leave telltale white marks on your LBDs. Plus, sprays are gentler since there's less contact with the skin (constant rubbing with sticks can be abrasive and cause skin darkening).

When choosing a deo scent, just make sure it doesn't overpower your regular fragrance; better yet, go unscented. Overwhelmed by the choices at the supermarket's personal hygiene section? Forget all the catchy commercials and pick the product that gently but effectively addresses your body's needs.
