I don't think there is a definitive "all about china" thread so let's just make it this thread.

Anyway, I'm also in the process of applying for a Chinese visa since I will be backpacking around China for about 2-3 weeks. Anyway, here is the requirement for filipino passport holders: http://ph.china-embassy.org/eng/lsfw/hzqz/t171818.htm

I will be grabbing a double entry visa to China since I plan on entering through Beijing and working my way around until I get into HK. Apparently, going to HK from mainland China is considered an "exit" and I need to go back to mainland China after. If that's your case, you probably want to consider getting a double entry visa.

^ wow! where do you plan on backpacking?

Here's what I'm thinking (not set in stone):
Start at Beijing -- Xi'an -- Shanghai (with day trips to Suzhou and Hangzhou) -- Hong Kong and Macau -- Guilin / Yangshuo -- Nanning (exit to Vietnam)

I would love to visit Lijiang and Dali but I don't have time and those places seem out of the way.

Wow...I wish I can tour that much places in one time. This Year is purely Hong Kong, Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou and Macau.

As for Beijing, I will reserve this for next year on the Olympics. I will book my ticket either at the end of this year or early next year to make sure that I get a cheap flight for August 2008. Need to save a lot of money first, coz Beijing on August next year everything will be very very expensive....Also i was thinking of a "Panda Tour". It sounded like a travel agency but, No. It's a tour wherein you get to spend 4-5 days taking care of a real panda. but you don't stay in the forest. You still stay in a hotel near the Panda Forest. Everyday there will be a van taking you to the forest and they will teach you how to feed the panda, bath the panda, play with the panda...etc... And before dinner time they will bring you back to the hotel. Basically China come up with the "Help the Panda" tour is to get fund for them to be able to save the animal. This I really got to try it..

dun sa zhou zhang... is that where they filmed MI:3? The place looks so familiar..
would it be much better to go around China joining a tour group or can you to places on your own?
Our plan could be going to Beijing - Xi'an (just to see the terracotta warriors) - Shanghai .. but we still don't know which places we're supposed to go.. We are sure that we are going to : the great wall of China , and the forbidden city.. after which .. mind really is blank, although the tour is really far from today, we want to research more on the places ( the important, how to commute to these tourist spots) and shopping centers as well.. The language, wont be a problem, since we can understand it (except Cantonese.. hehe.. )

I just booked my flight a while ago so my trip is a go! I will be in Beijing on May 3. I'm excited and terrified at the same time even though this will be my 2nd solo multi-country, several-month-long trip.

By the way, is 2 1/2 days in Beijing enough, or should I make that 3 1/2? I will be arriving in Beijing in the afternoon at 2:25 PM and plan to take the overnight train to Xi'an about 3 days later.

This may sound stupid but I already booked my flight even though my passport is about to expire in June and I haven't submitted a new passport application yet, much less apply for a Chinese visa. I'm going on the assumption that getting a Chinese visa would be easy.

^ wala naman atang problem ang tourist visa, mabilis lang kumuha nun, pero dapat ata passport mo e more than 6 months pa before magexpire

length of stay would depend on how many places you're planning to visit, great wall at least half a day na yun kasi malayo layo sa city

kakagaling ko pa lang din sa china nung chinese new year. 2 1/2 days sa beijing would not be enough to visit the must-go places.. sa akin kasi, one has to see:
    1. Great Wall
    2. Forbidden City and Tiannamen Square
    3. Summer Palace
    4. Temple of Heaven
    5. Yonghe Lamasery

Tapos yung iba, kung pede pa, like:
    1. Ming's Tomb
    2. Beihei Garden (tama ba spelling ko? )

Galing din ako sa Xi'an, kayang malibot ang buong Xi'an in just one day...though mejo malayo ang TerraCotta Museum.

    Highlights sa Xi'an would be:
    1. TerraCotta Warriors and Horses
    2. City Wall (na-amaze ako sa city wall sobra!)
    3. Ancient Hot Spring Garden (Lady Yang's story)

Enjoy dun! by the way, non-chinese ako, mejo nahirapan ako... buti na lang kasama ko sa package mga singaporean. =)

    tsk..tsk....tsk...

First thing you should do now is have your passport renew. It's actually easy. Just go to DFA around 11:00AM, lesser lang yun tao dun... advise lang to ng mga friends ko.

One you got your passport then you may go to China Embassy. With China Embassy you have to be there around 8AM to 9AM. I went to the embassy around 11:00AM and my number is "651"...grabe!! and when I look at the window they are just calling number 300 something... Oh well, pero mabilis kasi before 2AM nakaalis na ako sa ambassy...

Well I apply for a tourist visa and it will be ready in 4 days. And I will go there around 8AM para makuha kaagad.. hehehe.....
