yeah..."batman and robin" had to be the worst batman movie ever.

no offense, but it was just so...."gay". The lighting effects (bright pink), the added nipples in the costumes, the interaction between the characters...ughhhh!

"Batman Begins" -- the new movie currently being filmed -- looks promising. Here Christian Bale stars as the young Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Slated for release sometime in 2005. Check out the website at:

Is this another one of them prequels?

Christian Bale? Of "American Psycho"? Hmmm ... as Batman ... this would be interesting.

Yes, it is a prequel of sorts. The young Bruce Wayne in training, consolidating his efforts as a crimefighter while marshalling his resources at WayneTech, now a conglomerate pulled here and there by warring shareholder interest groups. Liam Neeson plays one of his mentors. The villain is Scarecrow, played by Cillian Murphy, the thin lead actor of "28 Days Later."

Christian Bale has played some pretty dark and gritty characters, including his roles in "American Psycho" and "Reign of Fire." He's in pretty good shape and can carry out action moves pretty well (see for example "Equilibrium," where he plays a Matrix-Neo-like revolutionary -- I actually enjoyed watching this movie even though the general reviews were pretty bad). As someone who's collected Batman comics for almost 20 years now, I think he may well be the most promising Batman/Bruce Wayne yet -- but the jury is still out until I actually see the film, of course.

The cast is certainly impressive, and Bale can certainly carry the mantle. But who's going to play Alfred?

Hell, after Clooney, it can't posibly get any worse! Not only is Batman and Robin the worst Batman film ever made, it could rank quite high on one of the worst movies ever made!

If you will believe it -- Michael Caine will play Alfred. Morgan Freeman will play Lucius Fox, trusted go-person in WayneTech. Gary Oldman will play Commissioner Gordon. And Ken Watanabe will play Ra's Al Ghul. It is being directed by Christopher Nolan, whose past work includes Memento (2000) and Insomnia (2002).

So talk about a promising group of people working to bring an appopriately dark tale to life! Very exciting. This of course may just raise my expectations too much!

Val Kilmer was my favorite Batman/Bruce Wayne too. I liked Michael Keaton's performance, but I couldn't get over having a curly-haired Bruce Wayne. Clooney had a perpetual smile on his face that was totally out of character for Batman/Bruce Wayne. If you ask me, the "Joel Schumacher era" (also known as "the batsuit with nipples era") spelled the decline of the Batman franchise. I hope this new movie resurrects it somewhat. As a prequel it is sort of modeled after Frank Miller's classic "Year One," where the young Bruce Wayne struggles to get on his feet as a crimefighter, donning the batsuit for the first time and somehow getting the support of the police as a vigilante.

Hmmm. Don't agree with Michael Caine as Alfred. I love Michael Caine, but the guy is not a good fit.

After watching Equilibrium, I am convinced Bale can proudly wear the Mantle. He's got the voice, the hawkish features, and the grim demeanor. The question is whether he can play Bruce Wayne with enough contrasting humor and obliviousness.

Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon is a VERY important role, particularly so if they stay true to "Year One". I think Oldman is good enough to play anyone, anytime, anywhere. He may not physically look like how I imagine the Commish to be -- and even less as Frank Miller's Commish, but there's very little that makeup can't do nowadays. Oldman certainly has the skills to play the part.

The Joel Schumacher era were not kind years for the Dark Knight. He modeled Batman after the Adam West television series, to the anger of nearly every fan of the comic. Whatever success Schumacher may have enjoyed in any other film, he will always be remembered as the man who screwed up Batman. For that, I spit on his film career, and nominate him as worst director ever!

Oh, does Mask of the Phantasm count as a Batman movie? I did watch it in a movie theater. If it does count, that would be my favorite.

This was entered by victory but I accidentally deleted it. Sorry, folks. My apologies to everyone.

    Great observations there, Mikoid.

I guess Schumacher couldn't really put eyebrows on Batman's cowl a la Adam West, so maybe he settled for the nipples.

Loved "Mask of the Phantasm" too. Also enjoyed the Batman Beyond movie "Return of the Joker" -- although I am no fan of the Terry McGinniss persona (the "superpowered batsuit" just takes out too much of the achievements of someone like Wayne who maximized his physical and mental potentials to the hilt, and used technology mainly as a tool). I did not quite enjoy "Mystery of the Batwoman."

I did enjoy a few select episodes from "Batman Beyond" -- one would be the episode where the aging Bruce Wayne falls for Ra's Al Ghul's temptations to use the lazarus pit to regain his youth and vitality. He regained some (but not all) of his strength after one dip and McGinniss exclaimed something to the effect of "at your peak you probably didn't need the superpowered batsuit." Yeah!

The other "Batman Beyond" episode I enjoyed was the storyline which had an aging Superman invite McGinniss to join a "new" Justice League, only for it to be revealed later that Superman was under the control of a parasitic alien lifeform. Enjoyed this exchange between Bruce Wayne and McGinniss, as Superman pursued McGinniss in the pimped up batmobile:

McGinniss: Wayne, how fast does the batmobile go?
    Wayne: Mach 3. Why?
McGinniss: Is that faster than a speeding bullet???

Of course the Kryptonian caught up and ripped the Batmobile to shreds.

Sorry for the off-topic comments. You're dealing with someone who's collected every Batman comic book title for more than 20 years, and watched pretty much every Batman movie/TV show ever made...

The props in the mr. freeze-ivy batman movie is the cheesiest! Notice how the icicles behave on the set.. they wiggle like cellophane! I never really liked Tim burton's style... When he's in charge, expect darkness, roots and vines somewhere or everywhere, and the orchestral music that's sooo him.

i still love the old batman movies (batamn and batman returns) because it has less effects which make them more real than the rest. i hate how they portray gotham city in the recent movies. it's very unrealistic unlike the classic gotham city before.

Batman Forever is my favorite movie. The fourth movie Batman and Robin reminded me of the Old TV show of Adam West.

The problem with batman is he has an identity crisis. A lot of ppl especially the older ones when they think of batman they remember Adam West and several campy cartoons. They are suprise to find out the DARK Batman popularized by Miller. Miller's Batman is the ideal one. Movies and TV shows(Batman:TAS) who used the Miller formula were very succesful.

I would like to Add on the Identity Crisis. Batman was originally a vigilante who used guns and killed lots of criminals in the 40-50's. But due to censorship in the 50's, Batman became a campy hero. In the 60's he was till campy and even had a Campy TV show and movies starring Adam West. Also in the 60's, Denny O'Niel and Neal Adams help saved Batman by bringing him back to his roots, a vigilante. In the 80's, We all knew what happend..Miller's Batman was introduced. A darker batman who is neurotic and isnt friendly to other superheroes anymore.

I also like Batman:Beyond. Terry reminded me of Peter Parker who is fav hero.
