WOMENs VOLLEYBALL- The V-League

Let's us support this new league ! Saw the live game between Letran and Lyceum yesterday over IBC13. Galing and exciting! And it was a live on TV !

I don't know much about the organizers- Sports Vision Management Group, Inc. But based on that initial telecast, they appear to know what they are doing.

Consider these -
1. They have live games, which will surely attract corporate sponsors in the mid-term.
2. For the initial tournament they took in 6 collegiate teams- LYCEUM, LETRAN, LA SALLE, UST , FEU and SSC. This means overhead for the participants will be manageable. Making this tournament easily viable.
3. They have 2 conferences this year, filling in the vacuum after the collegiate tournaments are over.

For a brief period in the '80s we were SEA Games champion in volleyball. If this league is sustained, then no doubt, we can regain that lofty billing. These tournament is a good venue to discover talents and at the same time keep the players in competitive form all year.

With some the pexers complaining about too much basketball, this is one good thing to give our support.

LS belles show stuff of champs
By Joey Villar
The Philippine Star 06/11/2004

Playing as if to prove something, reigning UAAP champion La Salle swamped San Sebastian College with a barrage of kills and pulled off a straight-set 25-23, 25-15, 25-20 victory yesterday to close in on fancied University of Santo Tomas in the Shakey’s V-League at the Lyceum Gym.

Outside spiker Manilla Santos delivered the most lethal blows with 13 points on the attack as she powered the pretty Lady Archers to the rousing victory, their third following an opening game loss to the Tigresses.

"Sabi ko nga sa players ko kailangang ipakita namin kung bakit kami ang champion sa UAAP, kailangang patunayan talaga namin," said La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus, who steered his team to two UAAP volleyball crowns in his eight seasons with the school.

The Taft-based netters thus seized solo second place with a 3-1 (win-loss) slate, just behind the Tigresses‚ who remained unbeaten after four games.

SSC top setter Elena Mayo came back from a bout with measles but her presence proved not enough to lift his team’s spirit and prevent the Lady Stags from absorbing a second straight setback after sweeping their first two games in the event sponsored by Shakey’s and organized by Sports Vision Management Group, Inc.

Santos, a 19-year-old third year business management student, was a dominating force at the net as she unleashed a barrage of kills, including a pair of crucial ones late in the first set to turn a 21-22 deficit into a big victory.

The La Salle netters then pounced on an erratic San Sebastian side in the next frame and coasted to an easy win, only to find themselves faced with a tougher set of rivals in the third set.

San Sebastian, which won 15 of the last 18 NCAA titles, rallied from a 9-14 deficit to wrest a 18-17 lead, thanks mostly to the jump-serving Jeanne Espolong and the power-hitting duo of Jinni Mondejar and Angela Descalsota.

But it turned out to be San Sebastian’s last show of force as Santos smashed through the frontal defense of Mondejar and 5’-11" Charisma Libunao with a pair of crisp kills to cap the La Salle’s domination.

And Santos’ awesome effort came at a time when La Salle’s top hitter Desiree Hernandez, the 2003 UAAP MVP, played far from her top form.

"She stepped up for us in this game, she really played big," said De Jesus of Santos.

"Sakto pa naman dahil magkakasakit ‘yung top player ko," he added referring to Hernandez, who struggled all game after complaining of an impending bout with flu.

Fancied Tigresses hunt for 5th win

The Philippine Star 06/13/2004

Top-level volleyball action resumes today as unbeaten University of Santo Tomas and second-running La Salle take on separate rivals, hoping to sustain their respective romps in the Shakey’s V-League at the Lyceum Gym.

The in-form Tigresses clash with the resurgent Lyceum Lady Pirates at 4 p.m., seeking a repeat of their first-round win and raring to extend their run to five heading into the second round of eliminations of the event sponsored by Shakey’s and serving as the revival of women’s volleyball.

The UST-Lyceum match will be aired "live" over IBC-13, according to the organizing Sports Vision Management Group Inc. Admission is free.

Like the Tigresses, the Lady Archers are also on a roll, having swept their next three games after losing to the solo leaders on opening day.

Using its power at the net, UST trounced four-peat NCAA champion San Sebastian College in an emphatic 28-26, 25-22, 26-24, win last Tuesday, but will be facing a team which is also coming off a victory after three straight losses.

"We beat them in our first match but as the tournament progresses, they are improving and we need to play extra cautious against them," said UST coach August Sta. Maria referring to Lyceum, which notched its first win with a 25-21, 28-26, 25-14 victory over Far Eastern University Thursday.

Expected to spearhead UST’s attack are the dreaded power-hitting troika of Mary Jean Balse, a rookie transferee out of Davao, Joyce Pano and Venus Bernal, back in harness after a bout with flu.

La Salle leans on skipper Maureen Penetrante, Carissa Gotis, Desiree Hernandez, Ivory Ablig and looker Manila Santos, hero in the school’s recent win.

UST spikers hack out tough win vs Lyceum
By Joey Villar
The Philippine Star 06/14/2004

University of Santo Tomas went through some anxious moments but pulled through just the same as it edged past upset-conscious Lyceum, 25-13, 21-25, 25-20, 25-23, yesterday to remain unscathed in the Shakey’s V-League at the Lyceum Gym.

Joyce Paño delivered the killer blows again, including three crisp spikes late in the fourth set that clinched the victory for the Tigresses, their fifth straight to remain on top of the heap.

"Before the game sabi ko ayokong patagalin pa ang laban, lugi kasi kami sa stamina dahil karamihan sa players ko ay galing sa sakit," said UST coach August Sta. Maria.

"Buti na lang sinuwerte pa kami nung bandang huli," added Sta. Maria, who is also backed up by the country’s Korean national team coach Song Yong Hok.

Pouncing on Lyceum’s erratic game, the Tigresses easily took the first set but got a big surprise in the second as the Lady Pirates bounced back to level the count at one set apiece.

Packing her spikes with power, Maria Angelica Bigcas terrorized the net with her solid kills as Lyceum roared to a 8-2 third set lead, but the Lady Pirates failed to sustain that momentum and struggled, enabling the Tigresses to close in at 19-20 before Paño teamed up with Mary Jean Balse to seize the last six points and the set for UST and a 2-1 lead.

Bigcas, who is still recovering from a right rotator cuff injury, however, struck back as she pumped in a barrage of smashes that saw the Intramuros-based belles storm to three-point leads thrice, the last at 11-8.

But Paño took charge for UST as she came through with power spikes, shoving the Tigresses to a 19-17 lead before Bigcas kept Lyceum alive with her own net incursions that gave the latter a 22-21 upperhand.

That proved to be the Lady Pirates’ last show of force as Paño came to the Tigresses’ rescue again with three of the latter’s last four points coming off her hits.

"Sayang kontrolado na namin yung game kaya lang bumigay kami din kami nung huli," explained an exasperated Lyceum mentor Emil Lontoc.

It was Lyceum’s fourth loss against a win.

UST tossers gun for 6th win vs Lady Tams

The Philippine Star 06/15/2004

Powerhouse University of Santo Tomas hopes to add UAAP rival Far Eastern University to its growing list of victims as they collide today even as San Sebastian tries to bounce back from back-to-back setbacks in the Shakey’s V-League at the Lyceum Gym.

The Tigresses seek to extend their amazing run to six as they take on the Lady Tams, currently at fourth spot on 1-3 (win-loss) slate, at 3 p.m. in this event aired "live" on IBC 13 and sponsored by Shakey’s.

But the Espana-based belles are coming off a hard-fought win in their last outing when they were dragged by the Lyceum Lady Pirates into four grueling sets, 25-13, 21-25, 25-20, 25-23, last Sunday.

Joyce Pano came out the hero for the second straight game as she spearheaded the attack with her potent spikes while giving her teammates the much-needed relief. Top hitters Mary Jean Baise and Venus Bernai groped for form during the two-hour encounter.

"Joyce (Pano) has been playing well these past few games," said UST coach August Sta. Maria. "She’s been stepping up for us when some of our players are struggling."

It also marks the first time that the Lady Tams and the Tigresses will face each other in this tournament after the former edged the latter in the UAAP volleyball wars last season for second place.

A win for UST will also give it a two-game cushion over reigning UAAP titlist La Salle, which smashed Letran, 25-15, 25-15, 25-16, over the weekend for a 4-1 record, heading into the last four playdates of the elimination round of this event organized by the Sports Vision Management Group, Inc.

Four-peat NCAA titlist San Sebastian, for its part, hopes to keep its place at third spot when it clashes with Lyceum at 5 p.m.

The Lady Stags swept their first two games but dropped their next two and are trailing the Tigresses and the Lady Archers with a 2-2 card while the Lady Pirates are in joint fifth place with the Lady Knights with 1-4 mark.
