Manila Bulletin GYPSY BALDOVINO Pelikula at Lipunan 2006 pays tribute The screen divas, past and present, take centerstage in a special film festival dubbed as "Pelikula at Lipunan 2006," sponsored by the Mowelfund Film Institute. The filmfest is showcasing the best movies of the leading ladies in cinema at Cineplex 5 of Gateway Mall in Cubao from February 24 to March 19. "Pelikula at Lipunan 2006" opened with a gala last Feb 22 with the presence of two movie queens Susan Roces and Amalia Fuentes, together with some of filmlandia’s finest leading ladies: Lilia Dizon, Delia Razon and Boots Anson Roa. They were awarded with a medallion of recognition, and honored with a screening of the oldest surviving film feature in the Philippines, Zamboanga, and snippets of three film classics that were considered lost for the past fifty years: Ang Banga ni Zimadar, and the original Dyesebel and Darna. Also seen at the event were comedian Metring David, Alma Concepcion, Leopoldo Salcedo’s daughter Yvonne Salcedo-Jones, former Miss Philippines Myrna Borromeo, German Moreno, Robert Arevalo, Eddie Romero, Quezon City Mayor Sonny Belmonte, Caloocan City’s first lady Purificacion Echiverri, Cecille Guidote Alvarez and Marichu Maceda. "In this festival, we decided to highlight the image of movie actresses in view of the recently concluded centennial of feminism in the Philippines," said festival director Nick Deocampo. The tribute however went beyond the female leads. In her speech, Susan Roces extended the accolade to the film producers of her time, "While we pay tribute to the actresses, we shouldn’t also forget that the leading producers of our period are also women— Dona Dolores Vera of Sampaguita Pictures, Dona Sisang de Leon of LVN, and Dona Adela Santiago of Premiere Productions." Some of the actresses whose films are being exhibited in the festival are: Edna Luna ("Dyesebel"), Daisy H. Avellana and Naty Crame Rogers ("Portrait of the Filipino as an Artist"), Anita Linda ("Sisa"), Rosa Rosal ("Anak Dalita"), Gloria Romero ("Pinagbuklod ng Langit"), Lilia Dizon ("Sanda Wong"), Susan Roces ("Gumising Ka Maruja"), Amalia Fuentes ("Aguila"), Nida Blanca ("Waray-Waray"), Rita Gomez ("Pagdating sa Dulo"), Gina Pareno ("Working Girls"), Gloria Sevilla ("Badlis sa Kinabuhi"), Nora Aunor ("Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos"), Vilma Santos ("Relasyon"), Mona Lisa and Hilda Koronel ("Insiang") Amy Austria ("Brutal"), Gina Alajar ("Orapronobis"), Sharon Cuneta ("Bituing Walang Ningning"), Maricel Soriano ("Hinugot sa Langit") and Judy Ann Santos ("Sabel"). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

ISKUPERO
At nakasama nga si Juday sa mga "reyna" the likes of Vilma Santos and Nora Aunor. Kaya may karapatan talaga si Alfie Lorenzo na tawagin na Young Super-Mega-Diamond-Star-For-All-Seasons si Judy Ann. |

i hope that Juday will tackle another offbeat role again...perhaps she can work with Unitel for a change
![]() Manila Times Tuesday, June 12, 2007 By Johven Velasco THERE was a time when feminists complained about the representation of women on the big screen. Either one was pictured as a martyr or a vamp, a virgin or a w h o r e. True enough, once when I got involved in a book project that assessed Filipino films of the 1980s, we found out—in the course of gathering the synopses of the films of that decade—that some 70 to 80 percent of the topics centered on the FPJ-inspired vendettas after an earlier massacre of one’s own family or of the whole community, and of village damsels in distress running away from home to escape from the clutches of lecherous stepfathers or uncles or hometown suitors only to end up in the big city as disgraced prostitutes. The images were worldwide; in fact, it was a Western feminist film critic who first pointed an accusing finger at the patriarchal male gaze of directors and producers as well as of male moviegoers as responsible for placing the female actor stripped of her clothes as an object of desire, and the character that she portrayed as a martyr of the hearth. That was a subconscious masculine desire and design brought out onto surface consciousness and naturally, things were bound to change as years passed, somehow. Now, women are showing more strength in disposition and will; now they are flexing some muscles. The local big screen is no different, if we were to watch the romantic dramas and comedies of mainstream cinema, notably those coming from the foremost movie outfit Star Cinema. I wish to focus on several of its films in the initial years of the new millennium and the stars that appeared in them, notably Kailangan Kita (2002), Milan (2004), You Are The One (2006), You Got Me (2007), and Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo (2006). For some reinforcement, let’s also include Regal Entertainment’s Sabel (2004), remotely a genre film, however, since it may be more properly classified as a private, visionary film. *snipped* Judy Ann Santos, who incidentally is celebrating her 20th year in the business, has her share of strong women film characters. A pragmatic, strong-willed advertising executive in Don’t Give Up On Us, romantic love takes a back seat even with a gorgeous and assiduous lover boy like Piolo Pascual who portrayed a more artistically inclined free spirit. In the Metro Manila Film Festival blockbuster Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo, Juday certainly was no pushover wife to Ryan Agoncillo. Earlier, she portrayed what could probably be considered the turning point of her career in Regal Films’ Sabel, as Vilma Santos did in Burlesk Queen. There Judy Ann’s character refused to play the traditional gender role assigned to women. There, too, in fact, she was freely expressive of her sexuality, and forever exploring as she continues to pursue her own individuation as a woman and her own person, from being a religious in prison ministry who “willfully cooperated” with the success of her rape by an inmate, to being a prime suspect herself in the murder of a real-estate-development lawyer who had violated her lesbian spouse. Quite a milestone indeed for an actress whose star persona had earlier been sweet, conservative and traditional. Juday, Claudine and Toni, to a certain extent, had been built up as stars in the usual leading-lady mold—sweet and nice, proper and demure, conservative and traditional. But their handlers and the stars themselves had found it wise not to sustain such an image in keeping with the times. Leave the syrupy and lady-like images to the Tita Durans, Gloria Romeros and Susan Roceses of the past for, after all, even Susan Roces had been caught lambasting a President of the Republic on national television and had taken to the streets! The portrayal of the young actresses of roles that are a far cry from the api-apihan pubescent in television soap operas somehow signify a paradigm shift. *snipped* |
