Actress Judy Ann Santos celebrates her 34th birthday today (May 11, 2012). As she turns another year older, her showbiz career continues to flourish. After the success of her hosting gig on Junior Master Chef Philippines, Juday is back to her original love - acting - as she plays the role of a girl who dies and leaves evidence of her friends' secrets behind in an upcoming Cinemalaya Festival film called Mga Mumunting Lihim.

Her latest role is one in a long series of portrayals she's done through the years in both teleseryes and movies. She's even won more than a handful of awards for her efforts.

This is one Judy Ann role no one is likely to forget. In this teleserye, Juday played the role of Esperanza, who was separated from her family as a young girl. Throughout the show, we saw Esperanza experiencing a lot of hardship, and we felt Juday’s own despair whenever her tears flowed on screen.

6. MARA IN MARA CLARA (1992-1997)

It was young Juday’s role as Mara in this teleserye that turned her into a household name. Mara, a girl who grew up in poverty after being switched with another baby at birth, touched people’s hearts with her kindness, and it was her tears as kontrabida Clara (Gladys Reyes) continuously made her life miserable that showed the rest of the country why she deserved to become a big star.

One word always comes up when we look back at this successful teleserye: kilig. Juday and Piolo’s love team was at its peak when this show came out, and they didn’t disappoint audiences as they delivered swoon-worthy scenes from when they first met as teens until they became husband and wife. We also salute Judy Ann for delivering a perfect dramatic performance whenever her character, Patricia, underwent hardships on the small screen.

9. JENNIFER IN SA PILING MO (2006)

If there ever was a teleserye that would take home the title of “Most Heartrending Judy Ann Show,” it would be Sa Piling Mo. Her role as Jennifer gave her the opportunity to play both the good and the bad girl, and our eyes were glued to the TV screen every weekday night as she joined a crime syndicate in an effort to save her boyfriend (Piolo Pascual) from becoming completely blind.

10. KRYSTALA IN KRYSTALA (2004-2005)

Most big-name actresses get an opportunity to play the superheroine, and when Juday got a chance to portray one of her own, we were so excited! We loved how she brought ordinary girl Tala--and confident alter-ego Krsytala--to life in this teleserye. We do admit, though, that we remember this show even more because it brought Juday and her then friend Ryan Agoncillo closer together.

BACK TO SOAP WORLD. Balita naman na magsisimula na siyang muli na gumawa ng teleserye sa ABS-CBN. Mabuti at napapayag na siyang mag-soap ulit.

Natatawang sabi naman ni Juday, “Unang-una, kasama siya sa kontrata.”

Sabi rin niya, “Magsisinungaling pa ba ko sa inyo kung sasabihin ko na gustong-gusto ko? Gusto ko naman.

"Hindi ko lang hinahanap yung puyatan. Hindi ko lang hinahanap yung schedule na araw-araw na halos hindi ka na makauwi, hindi mo na makikita yung mga anak mo.

“Pero yung ABS naman, guaranteed me na it’s not gonna be as hectic as before—noong dalaga pa ako.

"Sabi ko rin sa kanila, sa tunay na salita, wala namang pag-aarte na namumuo sa akin. Hindi ko lang talaga kaya ang puyatan.”

May cut-off daw siya ng 12 midnight.

Sabi pa ni Juday, “Gumigising naman ako ng alas-singko para ayusin si Yohan sa school.”

Si Sam Milby pa lang daw ang naririnig niyang makakasama sa bagong teleserye.

“Magkaibigan naman kami ni Sam. Pero malalaman ko this week kapag halimbawa, natuloy ang storycon at look test, yun na siguro ang magiging final casting.”

Mabilis na “Hindi ah!" ang sagot ni Juday nang tanungin kung siya ang namili ng leading man.

“Siyempre, may mga tanong pa rin na kesyo ganito, kesyo ganyan. Wala namang nahindian," aniya.

Bukod sa oras, may iba pa ba siyang ni-request bago siya pumayag na gumawa uli ng teleserye? May iba pa ba siyang demands?

"Actually, wala naman. Yung cut-off lang talaga. Ayoko lang noon yung 'for airing' palagi na taping.

"Kasi, parang buong buhay ko na-experience yan. Memorize ko na yan kahit tulog ako.

"At saka kasi, kapag may airing na mamayang gabi, hindi mo na mapupulido yung trabaho mo. Kasi, iniisip mo na kailangan, take one lang ‘to.

“Kakaisip mo nang kakaiisip, hindi mo na naitatawid nang maayos ang trabaho.

“So, yun lang ang nire-request ko na hangga’t-maaari sana, kung puwedeng i-can, naka-can siya para hindi ngarag, ‘di ba?

"Pag-uusapan kung hanggang anong month puwedeng i-can. Kasi sabi ko, baka puwedeng ayusin muna natin ang istorya.

"Kapag okay sa management, saka natin i-shoot. Para hindi rin tayo re-shoot nang re-shoot. Kasi, ganyan ang nangyari sa amin sa Habang May Buhay.

“I-can natin, pero, huwag namang dalawang taon.”

CHOICE OF ROLES. Pagdating sa mga gagawin niyang teleserye, namimili ba siya ng role?

“Hindi, hindi. Lahat iyon under ABS, alam naman ng ABS kung ano yung mga carry kong gawin sa estado ngayon ng buhay ko.

“Sabi ko rin sa kanila, parang hindi na kakagatin ang love team sa teleserye lalo na kung ako ang gaganap.”

Iniiwasan din daw ni Judy Ann na mawalan ng oras sa pamilya ngayong may bagong teleserye at pelikula siyang gagawin.

“Kaya nga po kailangan na ano, naka-schedule nang maayos yung shooting kung saka-sakali mang mag-push through itong movie...

“Kasi iyon yung kailangan kong ayusin with ABS, kung paano ito magagawa nang hindi magpapatung-patong, kasi ang hirap pag wala ka ng choice.

“Ayoko namang magtrabaho nang malungkot ako, kasi hindi ko na nakikita yung mga anak ko.”

“Sa TV production? Exclusive ako.”

Kinumpirma ni Juday na magbabalik-teleserye na siya sa ABS-CBN, na kung matutuloy ay malamang sa Hulyo o Setyembre magsisimulang umere sa Kapamilya network.

Ang ilan sa napapabalitang makakasama niya rito ay sina Sam Milby, KC Concepcion at Jessy Mendiola.

Mabuti at nakumbinsi siyang gumawa ulit ng teleserye?

“Unang-una, kasama siya sa kontrata. Ha! Ha! Ha!” tawa ng 100% Panatag Mom.

“At saka gusto ko naman. Hindi ko lang hinahanap ‘yung puyatan. Hindi ko lang hinahanap ‘yung schedule na araw-araw, na halos hindi ka na makauwi at hindi ko na makita ‘yung mga anak mo.

“Pero ABS guaranteed me na it’s not gonna be as hectic as before na dalaga pa ako. Kasi, sabi ko rin sa kanila, wala namang arte na namumuo sa akin, hindi ko na talaga kaya ‘yung puyatan, kapatid!” pakli niya.

12:00 midnight ang ni-request ni Juday na cut-off time sa taping. Kasi ay gumigising siya nang 5:00 AM para asikasuhin ang pagpasok ni Yohan sa school.

Ayaw rin niya sana ‘yung ‘for airing’ lagi na taping, kasi parang buong buhay niya raw na na-experience ‘yon noon nu’ng kabisihan niya sa paggawa ng mga soap opera.

Aniya, ‘pag gano’n kasi ay hindi nagagawang pulido ang trabaho. Sana rin daw, kung puwede ay naka-can na ang show para hindi ngarag.

At sana rin ay ayusin muna ang istorya at ipaaprub sa management para hindi sila mag-reshoot (tulad ng nangyari dati sa ‘narserye’ nila ni Derek Ramsay na Habang May Buhay).

Dagdag pa ni Juday, sinabi rin niya sa ABS na parang hindi na kakagatin sa teleserye ang loveteam, lalo na kung siya ang gaganap.

So, ibig sabihin, wala silang kissing scene ni Sam Milby?

“Wala! Nagtataka ka pa ba? Ha! Ha! Ha!”

Malalaman niya this week ang final casting ‘pag natuloy ang kanilang storycon at look test para sa nasabing show.

Exciting pa rin daw kay Juday lalo na ‘pag nagsisimula siya ng bagong teleserye.

“Medyo kabado ako, actually. Kabado, kasi may pressure na kasama. Pero maganda ‘yung project.

Hindi siya ‘yung tipikal na teleserye na may nawalang kapatid, nawalang nanay, may balat ‘yung anak…

“Walang ganu’n. Women empowerment siya, kaya maganda. Nakaka-encourage siya sa mga nanay, actually,” dayalog niya pa patungkol sa teleserye na nakatakdang idirek ni Malu Sevilla.

At definitely, bawal ang kissing scenes para sa kanya?

“Nakakaintindi na ‘yung panganay kong anak. Ha! Ha! Ha! Hindi na yata magwu-work.

“At saka panatag na panatag na ako, na kaya mong magdala ng isang programa kung naniniwala kang maganda ‘yung proyekto mo.

“Hindi kailangan ng love scene o kissing scene para patunayang nagmamahalan ang dalawang tao sa teleserye,” katwiran ng Lactum mom na si Mrs. Agoncillo.

Maaaring isa sa mga inaabangang teleserye ng taong ito ang pagbabalik telebisyon ni Judy Ann Santos, ang seryeng Against All Odds kung saan makakatambal niya si Sam Milby sa unang pagkakataon. Ibinalita noon na Oktubre ng taong ito ipapalabas ang serye ngunit nausog ito at sa susunod na taon na lamang ito ipapalabas. At nang matanong ng Push.com.ph si Sam tungkol dito, pinatotohanan niya ang balita. “Yes, it was actually. The airing, yung plano was around this time so okay naman. Siyempre mas okay na paglabas, maayos, it’s prepared. Ayoko ng nagrurush, nagmamadali din.”

Kaya naman pinagtutuunan muna ni Sam ngayon ang kanyang dalawang pelikula: isang indie film at ang Star Magic movie kung saan makakatambal niya si Pokwang. “Nag-last day na kami. Nakakatawa yung istorya sa amin ni Pokwang.” At isa sa mga inaabangang eksena nga dito ay ang kanilang bath tub scene ngunit ayon kay Sam, “Hindi lang basta bath tub scene, madami. First time din ni Pokwang so basta abangan niyo.”

At nang kamustahin ng Push ang Teleserye Queen sa patuloy pa ring shoot ng kanilang drama, “Actually masaya kami sa set, kalmado lang very relaxed.” Ipinahayag niya din ang kanyang saloobin tungkol sa pagkakaurong sa ere ng kanilang programa. “Ako naappreciate ko na very honest yung management na hindi kakayanin i-show yung soap ng October. Ako rin naman, yung opinyon ko din naman, ayoko din naman mag-tape ng for airing kasi ‘di mo maseseryoso yung trabaho kasi lagi kang ngarag sa pag-arte, tapos hindi ka pwede mag-take two, mag-take three kasi for airing nga siya.”

Nagsalita rin si Juday sa mga naranasan niya dati na kung maari ay hindi na maulit muli. “Ayoko kasi yung wala akong choice, hindi naman ako sa nagmamaldita noh pero ang tagal ko kasing ‘di umarte sa telebisyon kaya gusto ko pag lumabas yung soap na ginagawa namin, yung dekalidad yung ipapakita namin para worth naman yung paghihintay ng mga tao.”

Para kay Judy Ann, tama na rin ang naging desisyun na ito ng management. “Mas gusto ko na binigyan nila ako ng time manamnamn itong teleserye na ito. Atsaka-ibang iba kasi yung istorya, ibang-iba yung character, at saka very physically demanding din siya. Ang daming paghahandang gagawin. Ayoko naman na ilabas siyang half-baked kasi hindi siya napag-tuunan ng pansin dahil hinahabol mo yung airtime mo so okay na rin ako.”

‘Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala’ – Trailer

ABS-CBN has released the trailer of the upcoming drama series “Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala” starring and Sam Milby, KC Concepcion and Judy Ann Santos.

Coming from Judy Ann’s drama series “Habang May Buhay,” KC’s “Lovers in Paris,” and Sam’s “Kahit Konting Pagtingin,” the three Kapamilya stars are set to return in Primetime TV as they star in the upcoming dark drama series involving women fighting adversity in life and marriage.

Other cast-members in the upcoming primetime series are John Estrada, Coney Reyes, Susan Africa and Tirso Cruz III.
