Thumbs up Philippine Young Men's NT 2004

The Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) of Secretary-General Graham C. Lim and President Quinteliano "Tiny" Z. Literal has finally appointed a real coach to handle the National Young Men's Team in Coach Joe Lipa!

Coach Lipa returns to coaching the national team for the first time since winning the gold medal at the 1997 SEA Games in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Qualified to join the team are Filipino players born in 1984 and later. Daily try-outs will be held at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum from 8:00PM to 10:00PM starting February 16.

The team is slated to compete in the Fourth ABC Young Men's Championship set for September 29 to October 8, 2004 in Tehran, Iran.

    GO TEAM PHILIPPINES!

any news on who will join the try-outs? any marquee players to watch out for?

maybe the players in the try-outs ng bayan can help.. after all the said competition will again conflict the schedule of the ncaa and uaap. i also doubt if joe lipa would even give them a chance to join..

    joe lipa... ayos to.

but i just hope the uaap/ncaa and bap can work things out so players from both collegiate leagues can join the team without compromising their respective team's chances.

in the early 90's ust allowed their players to join the youth squad even though it will jeopardize their uaap campaign. these players include denis espino, rey evangelista, patrick fran, binky favis (?), edmund reyes (?)

If you go by his previous national stints, Joe Lipa builds a complete team, not necessarily the best collection of individual talent. Expect at least a couple of role players or specialists to be taken over some other more established stars.

not unlike ron jacobs who had the likes of tonichi yturri sacrifice their body for the team.

Like in previous try-outs for our NT, the head coach is always faced with prospect of making do with what graces fall onto him. I hope that will change with the appointment of a real coach in Joe Lipa. Coach Lipa is equipped with the charisma and respect to attract the best and brightest young stars from the NCAA, UAAP and the provinces.

I checked out the birthdates of the UAAP and NCAA players posted in University Belt for those players born in 1984 and later. If things push through as hoped by the fans, we will have a potent NT line-up for 2004. A NCAA-UAAP selection under Coach Lipa will easily make mincemeat of the current NT pool composed mostly of Philippine College of Criminology (PCCr) students under coaching genius Johny Tam.

The last time Lipa handled the Youth Team he had a 45-day preparation, but without any tune-up tournament competed in. The team went all the way to the finals. Unfortunately, it lost to China.

Those who made it big from that team were Paras, Alvarez, Asaytono, Bobby Jose and Jun Reyes.

With the lenght of preparation Lipa has, and the talent available, we can all be hopeful that we will bag the gold this time!

The biggest problem I can forsee (aside from the fact that other nations still field overaged players) is that the ABC Tournament rans smack into the crucial phase of the UAAP and NCAA tournaments - Sep29 to Oct8.

Sana naman, habang maaga, ma-plantsa na agad ang skeds nga dalawang liga, taking into account the tournament in Iran. Otherwise, baka masayang lang ang pagod ng lahat.

That's right! The whole team suddenly resigned after a newspaper expose on the wanton use of overaged players for the RP Junior NT since the ABC Juniors began in 1970. Based on current PBA records, at that time players like Jojo Lastimosa (22) and Alvin Patrimonio (20) would definitely not make the then 18-year age limit.

Majority of the team made it to the PBA. Aside from the five players earlier mentioned, the rest of the team included Joey Guanio, Eric Reyes, Richard Bachmann, Zaldy Realubit, Romulo Orillosa, Arnold Adlawan and Mar Anthony Magada. Future PBA top pick Peter Jao was the alternate.

prior to this batch of rp youth team the philippines has been violating the age requirement of the the said tournament. overaged players would eventually be revealed once they apply for the pba.

as for the joe lipa-coached team, only mar anthony (of former ncaa member trinity college ?) and arnold (5'5" point guard of san sebastion stags?) didn't make it to the pros.
