other bookstores besides national, powerbooks, etc.

    Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone knows other bookstores here in Metro Manila besides the following:
    - National Bookstore
    - Power Books
    - A Different Bookstore
    - Booksale

Are there any specialty bookstores that cater to, say, old Chinese books? It doesn't matter if its second-hand or not, a book is a book.

I've been searching in vain for the following:
    - The Glass Bead Game (Magister Ludi) by Hermanne Hesse
    - Steppenwolfe by Hermanne Hesse
    - A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers
    - Lucky Wander Boy by D.B. Weiss

and others, mostly old ones. I've been to the bookstores I know and I can't find any of these (National had Hesse, but only Siddharta).

I am also looking for comprehensive books on Japanese and Korean (Hangul) language. I am talking about books that outline the construction and writing of the language as well as grammar and pronounciation. Most of the language books I find are for tourists, containing simple phrases and words that will get you by. Any bookstore(s) that actually have these?

    I would appreciate any help.

    Thanks,

    -m

    Hi!

u cud try booktopia. it's next to the entrance of eastwood. i think they have other branches too. lots of nice books &not pricey.

Yes, I was going to mention BOOKTOPIA. I think pwede ka magpahanap ng book sa kanila.

Well, if you want the book by Eggers, look for it at National Bookstore. Two of my friends bought their copies for 100.50 each. It was on 70 percent discount. Just be patient to go to different branches because I would think not all National Bookstores carry the tittle.

Fully Booked in Powerplant. It's pricey since they have a UK source for the books (and anything from over there is more expensive than anything from the US). BUT much of the books I've been looking for for so long are there. And if ever you don't find what you're looking for, browse around. It's near to heaven for me

    Try it. Good luck

I've been seeing this in Powerbooks Megamall for the last 2 months or so.

National Bookstore, meron niyan. Look in the Bios/Autobios section. Try NBS Shangri-La, Megamall, and Katipunan.

i've come to love bibliarch because of its great service (the staff will cover the books you buy with plastic--free of charge!!!), not to mention its very handsome owner (architect daez). i understand that customers can place orders there. it specializes in rare and hard-to-find books.

there's a bibliarch branch in glorietta.

    popular bookstore

i heard that Popular Bookstore still exists. they're now in Tomas Morato, I think.

anyway, you might wanna ask people about it. They also have rare books.

I used to "shop" there when I was still a socialist/activist.

My friend got his Beat books from there, the Lawrence Ferlinghetti stuff, Kerouac's other books, etc.

As for the Herman Hesse book, I wish I could find a way to give my copy to you. what's weird is that I have about six of his novels though I'm not his fan...

yup, popular bookstore is still very much around.

fredda: I own and have read Hesse's Rosshalde, Gertrude, and Siddharta. It would be inappropriate to comment on his writing since all of them are English translations by someone else, but the basic recurring theme of his books invoke something deep inside, at least for me. I am most certainly a "fan" of his work.

    Talking

how great to know that you are a fan of Mr. Hesse.

i've long ago realized that people differ in their tastes and preferences.

i hope i didn't come off as being arrogant in my statement. that isnt my intention at all. he's not among my faves. but the fact that I read six of his novels (Narcissus being the one I liked best and Steppenwolf and Beneath the Wheel I also liked!) means that I find his works important, I guess.

that said, im also not a fan of J.D. Salinger though I read his books.

however: i must also admit that sometimes understanding or 'getting' a work of art is a matter of time and readiness and open-ness. there are some books that didnt impress me upon first reading but looking back on them i realize that they're great.so it is quite probable that my ideas about Hesse change!

you're right about that translation bit... I could understand how hard it is for translators to capture the nuances of a language so alien to what you're using.

i'm curious to see the powerbooks still existing.

so, have you gotten the books you're lookin for yet?

  16. #16
fredda: I don't think your statement is arrogant at all. On the contrary, I also believe that everyone is entitled to his or her preferences. I apologize if my previous statments seemed standoffish.

As for acquiring the books, I have to say 'not yet'. I am not going to let all these helpful replies in this thread go to waste however, it is simply a lack of time on my part.

i don't think you'll find your books in this bookstore but if you're looking for Philippine-published books, then head to The Filipino Bookstore. they have branches in malate and alabang town center
