'Victory' ('Escape To Victory' sa Pinas). I'm not sure if it's actually a sporting movie. Nonetheless it was entertaining especially when Pele did that backflip. Stallone's acting was passable enough but that's because he was ably supported by 2 legends: Michael Caine & Max Von Sydow. I remember Stallone's German nemesis in that movie (Werner Roth) because he used to have a tv show where he conducts futebol clinics in the US (his bball counterpart was Hubie Brown).Originally posted by nastrans
Can't believe everyone forgot Raging Bull with Robert de Niro. He won an Oscar for that...
There was also this fantastic late 70s movie called Breaking Away about cycling in the midwest...excellent coming of age movie which is worth the effort to look for...young Dennis Quaid and Daniel Stern star.
Chariots of Fire moved me as well, and i don't know if you guys are old enough to remember Brian's Song - which isn't really a sports movie per se but it's about this pro football player dying of cancer and it was a true story also.
And how about Caddyshack? Doesn't that qualify as a sports movie? Hahaha. If you don't like that, there's always Tin Cup.
And Robert Redford was incredible in The Natural.
I also liked Jerry Maguire, Any Given Sunday, He's Got Game and yes, even Major League.
There's also that minor league hockey classic Slap Shot with Paul Newman...
We also missed Wildcats (hehe - Kathy Ireland reference...)
And i have a VCD copy of For Love of the Game somewhere...i'm a sap too...
cutting edge-about olympic figure skating, cute si moira kelly! toe pick!
shaolin soccer-sana dinub sa english.
the pistol-film bio ni pete maravich
yung movie about steve prefontaine,i forgot the title, pina labas sa star movies, siya yung track & field star ng univ. of oregon, pinakita pa don kung pano naimbento yung "waffle-soled" running shoes ng nike
bagger vance-golf movie starring will smith, charlize theron, matt damon
oh oh oh oh wait there's one more. The 'No Retreat no Surrender" not actually a ball sport movie but it is a sport still --karate.. .stuffs like that...
ummm... there's one more. RAD? i don't know if any of you guys are familiar with that but it's cycling free style type.
hey stjames, pele did that backflip in a commercial ata. Tama ba ako? KAsi i remember trying to immitate him when i was like 5 - 8 years old.
The most classic baseball movie is still "The Natural" with Robert Redford. Although I did enjoy Bull Durham a lot.
For football, "Rudy" and "Remember the Titans" are excellent. Both tell good stories of how sports can be a good reflection of life.
And for basketball, my all time favorite sports movie is "Hoosiers". It's based on a true story and this movie was well done and all aspects. An entertaining bball movie is "White Men Can't Jump". It has good dialogue that complements the actual basketball action.
When I was young, there was this movie with Dr. J and Kareem Abdul Jabbar but I can't remember much about it. I remember enjoying it but it was so long ago.
Peace.
There's this movie about two Olympic gymnasts -- an American boy and a Russian girl -- who fell in love during one summer Olympics. The Russian girl won the gold. When that Olympic season ended, they had to separate heartbreakingly since they will probably meet again after four years -- that is, if they're still in competing form. On the plane going home, the American guy got a memorable gift from the Russian: her Olympic gold medal. Naiyak ako...promise. I think the title is AN OLYMPIC LOVE STORY(or was it A Golden Love Story?).
I also like A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN and WATERBOY
Iniyakan ko rin pala ang THE CHAMP starring Ricky Schroeder, Faye Dunaway, and Jon Voight.

Great topic! Hmmm, lemme see....
In no particular order
The Color of Money and Slapshot. Two of my favorite sports (pool and hockey). Interestingly enough, both movies feature Paul Newman.
I also enjoyed Mystery Alaska. Hockey movie featuring Russell Crowe, Burt Reynolds, Hank Azaria and Lolita Davidovich.
If you can consider Jerry Maguire a sports movie, then yeah.
Of course, Cutting Edge as a 'date' movie.
And my favorite sport to be featured in movies, football. The Replacements, Any Given Sunday and Remember the Titans. Love those 3 movies.
Wow, dami palang magaganda sports movie. Others I forgot to add was "The Natural" (Thanks Kaboink), and "The Baltimore Bullet" which was a billiards movie in the early 80s featuring Bruce Boxlietner (hope I spelled that right), James Coburn, Omar Shariff and Ronnee Blaklee.
Hope you guys could also post where I can get these movies on DVD. I'm trying to build a sports movies collection.
Thanks!![]()
Oh by the way! What's the title of that movie shown recently on HBO featuring Edward James Almos (of Miami Vice fame) about a baseball pitcher and his rookie game in the ig leagues? Just curious.![]()
Saw that Olmos movie too. It's "Talent For The Game". Olmos is a criminally underemployed actor.
Other great sports movies:
"Hoosiers" with Gene Hackman and Dennis Hopper. Inspiring.
"The Goat" with Don Cheadle. Hardcore.
"Raging Bull". End of an era, the last great film of the 70's, fitting quote at the end:
So for the second time (the Pharisees) summoned the man who had been blind and said:
'Speak the truth before God, we know this fellow is a sinner.'
"'Whether or not this fellow is a sinner, I do not know. All I know is this:
once I was blind and now I can see.'"
- John 9, 24-26.
"Rocky". The original.
"The Hustler". The original.
"Slapshot". What a fun movie.
