    Post Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

There are Impreza and Skyline threads, so I thought that the Evos should have one too... have a go at it folks.

Anyhow... I find it fitting that the Evolutions are named as such considering that if you look at the cars from 1-8... you can trully see the progression or the evolution of the car!

Though, I believe the Lancers aren't the only cars to hold the Evolution tag... dunno what others do though... but from what I know, the Lan Evos are the most popular use of the name.

Me thinks it'll all depend on Mitsubishi and Rally Art's plans for their WRC program. According to FIA homologation rules, they have to keep a competing car viable for commercial market...

Sadly, the Evo VII did poorly at last season's WRC so Mitsubishi's taking a sabatical from this season supposedly to bring their R&D up to speed...

We may be looking at the Evo VIII or most likely a newer generation of Evolutions for next season... or perhaps what you mentioned... personally though, I doubt that Mitsubishi will distcontinue the Evolution name... it's far too popular in its native Japan to let go off now... especially if they intend to continue competing in the WRC.

Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!!! Mistubishi Phils. is releasing or has released a limited run of the Evolution VIII here but it costs a bloody Php 2.9M!!! That's a good 300k more than the EvoVII when they brought it out... the Evos just keep getting more and more expensive... I might just start looking to the new WRX if this price hiking trend keeps up!

Really? I was always under the impression that gray market prices were typically higher than dealer prices... I actually wonder which specs they sell here... the US or Japan specs... to my understanding, the US versions don't have the ACD and AYC drive systems while the Japan versions do... anyone know which one they're selling here?

Mitsubishi will use the upcoming Colt platform as the basis for their future WRC contender, but that all depends on how soon the model will start its production run so it's possible that there could still be an Evo IX, which is now widely rumored.

Mitsubishi will not discontinue the Evolution name. As a matter of fact, they plan on expanding the Evo badge to all of their models - something akin to having a performance version for each model. That means we'll soon see an Evo Pajero/Montero, an Evo Colt, Evo L200/Storm, etc.

I believe they sell the European/Japanese version here for the simple reason that it costs less in terms of importing it since most gray market dealers already have ties with authorized dealers in Europe and Singapore.

Really? I sorta hope they still use the Lancer Evolutions... I kinda got used to them already and I'll miss 'em if they change their WRC car. But then again, the Evo VII hasn't exactly been good to them during the last season... or can we attribute that to Tommi Makinen's departure from Mitsubishi?

Yeah, I heard of this... I already saw the Evolution Pajero in some magazines recently... I think it's actually already out though I'm not too sure...

Yeah, that makes sense... although I do wonder how much of a difference the ACD and AYC drive systems make between the US and Japan versions... supposedly it's those drive systems that made the VII tremendous at the corners.

EVO VI for me... this is the last of the raw Evos if i'm not mistaken...

2.9M!!! Add around 200K and you'll have a BMW Z4 which may keep its value longer... but of course its power and purpose isnt the same as an Evo.

Many Evolution fans do consider the VI as one of the last true Evos... particularly because it's considered to be one of the most "fun" to drive AWDs around... since the inclusion of ACD and AYC into the VII onwards, purists claim that the additional drive systems make the Evo a less fun car in the sense that it's so easy to drive that less skill is required to handle it and all... it's certainly not as easy to drift the VII as the VI but I personally think that the VII makes for a better cornering machine than its predecessors...

The VI is also the last Evo that Tommi Makkinen drove for Mitsubishi in the WRC before his switch over to Subaru. I think hence the Tommi Makkinen Edition...

IMHO though, whether I prefer the VII over the VI or not, put the two head to head with equally good drivers and I don't think you'll see much of a difference... the beauty of the Evos for me is that you can pick any of the bunch and it'll just boild down to personal taste from then on out... they're all good in my book!

Both, really. Even before Makkinen left for Subaru, Mitsubishi was starting to falter already, which gave Tommi the perfect reason to leave. And I just think Alister McRae's nowhere near as talented as Makkinen to help develop the Evo VII.

I think the recent success of Peugot's 206 and the handling capabilities a much smaller car offers like Ford's Focus and Citroen's Saxo prompted the change to use the Colt platform instead. Remember how Mitsubishi first used the Galant as their WRC contender with little success, which prompted the change to the much smaller Lancer platform?

I think the absence of the systems should make the car a lot more fun (read: more challenging) to drive. But with both systems on, the Evo VII should be a lot more forgiving and won't penalize common driving errors. The ACD and AYC are there to tame the beast. Without the electronics safety net, you can still throw the back end out with the Evo VI but with the systems on the Evo VII, you could indeed carve corners but it just takes away the fun of muscling the car through it.

Yeah... I was a little unimpressed with Alister McRae... wasn't there another McRae brother aside from Colin that just came into WRC as well? Or is that with one of the lower group categories?

Yeah... the 206 and the Focus were probably lighter and tighter turning due to their size and weight in comparison to the sedan runners like Subaru and Mitsubishi... I think that Subaru however don't plan on changing their Impreza platform... I think they're even running the new Impreza already...

gawd mokkori, if i only had the money... i'd give an arm and a leg for that evo vii.

anyway this thread is good, i'm learning a lot. i'm a newbie as far as being a car enthusiast is concerned, and the evo VIII rocks!!

    EVO VI

The VII and VIII are drastically different then the others. The characteristics of the later are different in handleing. Tommi even admited it sucked too much for rally and harder to compete with..and this being at the point where Mitsu was falling. The VI is the last of the true breed.

About the ACD and AYC. Ya the US Spec EVOs do not have them, but look at all the tuned EVOs in Japan...the stock ACD and stock AYC is one of the first pieces to be yanked out. They replace the stock electronic ones with manually adjustable regular type ACDs and AYCs. Set up for mild oversteer and drifting corners could never b better!

  20. #20
Yeah... the Japanese like to drift their cars and the Evo VII onwards are hard to drift because the ACD and AYC systems makes it very hard to lose traction (believe me, I know... )... but I still like keeping the ACD and AYC systems... for me, it makes for a more fun car...
