    Post Should Joel Banal Resign?

ADMU has lost 4 of their 8 games
including 4 of the last 5
they are in 4th place now
    with 6 games to play
3 teams are just 1 game behind
they could miss the Final 4

is it time for BANAL to go

    1st
he is not from THE ATENEO
obviously an alumnus would have been a better coach

    2nd
    too many losses
    LIPA had records of
    10-4, 11-3 and 10-4
so looks like he will be off the record

    3rd
why is ALVAREZ playing out of position
he is 6-4 should play low
    instead of hitting the 3s

    4th
    with practically the same lineup
    why is nothing happening good
is it lack of discipline among the players

    5th
    from a PBL championship
success must have gone to the teams head
its the coach that should motivate the players
    keep them focus
or the title was a fluke
as CRUZ of FEU led the team

even before the seaason started, i knew ateneo will make what ateneo made out of lipa last year... a scapegoat. ateneo is known for blaming others or something for their miseries. kung hindi referees, game-fixing daw, o di kaya recruitment practice daw ng ibang schools. before coach banal, ang crowd muna ang sinisisi, porke " A CHAMPION TEAM DAW NEEDS A CHAMPION CROWD".... pathetic. pasalamat nga sila sa mga nanood na nagbabayad para mapanood lang silang matalo. dapat siguro ipagmukha din sa mga yan na "A CHAMPION CROWD NEEDS A CHAMPION TEAM". actually kahit hindi mag-champion basta lumalaban lang and they should live up to their potential and HYPE!!! puro kasi hype hype na lang.

    Cool

i dont think there's anything wrong na coach joel banal isn't an alumnus of the ateneo. i agree that rich is playing out of position. he attempts too many three-pointers which lowers the chance of getting offensive rebounds.
the team obviously misses the services of bugia and membrere. without bugia, the ateneo is left with villanueva and alvarez in the frontline. elmido, tadeo, kramer cant fill the job left by bugia. also, it's quite obvious that ateneo takes less three-pointers this season compared to last season since magnum isn't around. good outside shooting will open up the defense inside the paint and will allow villanueva to dominate. hopefully, tenorio takes more shots in the coming games and rich should attack the basket rather than shooting from the outside.

Unless a miracle happens, Ateneo's season is over.
They should start preparing for next year.
At the end of the season, they should let go of all their players.
They should then conduct open tryouts for any true Atenean.
    Ateneo needs fresh, unspoilt blood.
    Not these primadonnas...

NO. Nagsisimula pa lang sya, there are so many chances for him to prove that he is a good coach. If you can still remember last year, his brother ... Koy Banal experienced 5 consecutive losses before the team finally enter the Final 4. Kanya-kanyang oras lang yan.....

absolutely.joel banal has shown us nothing that can prove that he's a good coach...a pbl championship? yea ok whatever. that was won by celino cruz.
and what the hell is he thinking putting alvarez as a shooter? we lack enough big men na nga with bugia out...putting rich at the arc only leaves enrico to crash the boards.
he doesn't use the bench properly....damn....what kind of coach will put a rookie who has had NO time the entire season as a starter? of course kramer would miss those first four shots....he hasn't gotten any experience at all, and then you're gonna start him? wtf?

fortune...i agree with most of what you're saying....except i don't think it matters that banal is not an atenean. but everything else...you nailed it right on the head.

it's time for another new coach.

NOT TRUE my friend. EVEN IF ATENEO LOSES TO UE this Saturday, they still have a good shot at a Final Four berth. Why? Because they would be then tied in the loss column along with the winner of the UP-FEU match this Saturday. BUT IT WILL STILL BE A TIE FOR 4th PLACE!!! However, a loss to UE will mean that ATENEO MUST WIN ALL THEIR REMAINING GAMES just to ensure at least a tie for a FINAL FOUR slot. It's still not too late for Ateneo but the wake up calls have been sounded and some members of the team are still in bed!!! Get up guys and give all of us a ONE BIG FIGHT!!!

As for the question, NO! It does not do Ateneo any good to change coaches just because of some losses. Sometimes, a coach's system takes several seasons to see fruition. KEEP JOEL BANAL!

Ateneo must learn to stick it out with their coaches. This is especially true in college ball. The players only stay for 4 years but it is the coach who will provide continuity.

What were the three most succesful teams in the past.

    UST - Coach Aric
    La salle - Franz Pumaren
FEU (in the 90's) - Turing Valenzona

Even in the US. The two most succesful college teams were the

UCLA Bruins... They won most of their titles under the legendary Coach Wooden.

Duke - Mike Krzyzewsk did not win the championship at once. But they kept the faith in him and he instilled a winning system and tradition.

    Patience is a virtue.

    No.

    And why should he?

He is not the only the one to blame for Ateneo's "lackluster" performance lately.

The players are partly to blame also.

As for his performance as a coach, I have noticed lately that Ateneo isn't benefitting from the way he handles his rotation. Especially that with Tenorio and Cruz during their last game against FEU.

His sudden move to field in Tenorio for Cruz during a time when Ateneo is playing well and fluidly really breaks the energy level of the players immediately.

Anyway, it's still too early to judge him by the team's performance so far. And yes, he's the coach and he's responsible for his actions.

i'm a lasallian but this is my two cents worth in this issue:

    1. banal is a good coach. he was tim cone's assistant when alaska won the grandslam in 1996. he has mastered the art of the triangle offense. it's just that the eagles are yet to be acquianted to the nuances of the system, up to now when it's already 8 games into the season.

    2. it is plain stupid for alvarez to take three pointers. he is the only big man outside villanueva but still he insists on straying 20 feet away from the basket.

    3. fonacier has been playing way below expectations. during this rookie year, he was expected to make the same impact that villanueva had in his first year. too bad he hasn't lived up to his billing as a former uaap juniors mvp.

    4. membrere is sorely missed right now. his absence only revealed that ateneo has no reliable outside game. even tenorio has been throwing bricks for the past 3 games. even gonzales' presence hasn't helped admu a bit.

    5. i agree with quetapasa. release all (and i mean all) their players, conduct a tryout to make sure that the ones who will represent admu will be the ones having the ateneo spirit.

    6. also, i agree with gpov, patience is a virtue. the likes of pumaren who had 4 championships in 4 years or of joe lipa who lead ateneo to the final four thrice in 3 years and culminated to finals stint last year are RARE cases. even aric del rosario of ust had to endure years of losing before he came up with the four-peat for ust. it's a wonder why ateneans can't be as patient as thomasians and lasallians are.

    peace.

first off, ALvarez won't help the team by shotting three pointers.
The team is good on paper, but, they have to play with all out heart. This is the x factor why DLSU is a 4 time champion. The only players I see in Ateneo who really play with heart is Enrico Villanueva and LA Tenorio. They have to wake up soon

Coach Banal is using a new system and it will take some time before Ateneo can adopt to it
