A Patek Philippe Twenty-4 or Patek Philippe Calatrava 4820/1. Maybe I'll be able to afford one in the next lifetime. Or maybe 2 lifetimes from now. That's if I don't spend a single cent from now till that day.

Ira:
Actually, the Patek I prefer is the classic 3919. Not including the really expensive complicated watches like the IWC Il Destriero Scafusia - the watch reviewed by one reviewer as the one "God would wear if He wore a watch" (price in the several hundred thousand dollar range and only 125 were made) the one I would aspire for - in this case, I still have to just dream about it - is the Audemars Piguet Perpetual Calendar Anniversary model featuring the timeless AP caliber 2120 movement called by some the finest automatic movement ever made - not excluding the legendary patek movements like the PP 240. In the Philippines like in many other countries, a fancy wristwatch is frequently used as an indication of success and wealth. If you had your choice of which watch to wear, price being no object, which would it be?

i'd wear the wristwatch given to me by my gf--a round analog with a simple black leather strap and a white background with ERAP's face on it! (Hah! Bet you don't know that there exists such a watch!!) There's no price tagged to it, you can't buy it anywhere, and it's only given to special people close to His Excellency. It doesn't indicate how successful or wealthy i am, but how i stand out in the crowd, even if, let's say, i'm damn poor. And i think that's the better part of it--celebrating your uniqueness in a faceless society, rather than your accumulations, which can be taken away from you.

BU: Aack, so does that mean the ones I like are cheaper? *crosses fingers* I liked the Patek models I mentioned mostly due to their attractiveness compared to the other Patek ladies' watches (read: mas bagay sa outfits ko), and if quartz watches cost less than the mechanical ones, by god, I will actually be able to buy the 4809/2 model THREE lifetimes from now. I asked about the price of one of the "lesser" Patek models available in this country for my brother's fiancee's engagement gift (leather straps lang), and those cost over PhP1.2 M already, grabe!
Blue Babe: The way money seems to be flowing out of the palms of my hands...mukhang di talaga aabot in this lifetime. Maybe I'll just ask my parents to get me a pair for Christmas...*hears dad's "are you CRAZY?" yell...*[This message has been edited by Ira (edited 01-23-2000).] |

The patek's you mentioned are pretty nice though both are quartz watches. I think mechanical watches are the way to go since while they are not as accurate as quartz watches, they are much more difficult to construct and are really works of art. The finishing and construction of the patek automatic and manual movements are as beautiful as the rest of the watch. For instance manufacturers such as PP, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet and Blancpain hand polish (sometimes even twice) each of the 150 to 300 parts that compose the mechanical movement. Needless to say, great care is put into assembling the whole watch as well. As grumpy may agree, Pateks are built to last forever and are the Rolls Royce of the watch world. I personally think the finest PP ladies watch is the 4809/2 calatrava which is a manual wind movement. PePs: The rolex is obviously a classic though is not quite as exclusive as the brands I mentioned above. For instance while Rolex makes and sells about 700,000 watches yearly (same number as Tag and Raymond Weil) makers such as Patek (20,000 yearly), Audemars Piguet (12,000 yearly) and Blancpain (8,000 yearly) are much more "exclusive." I agree that the Santos watch is a classic and the manual wind ladies santos dumont is probably tops in its price range. Here is a scan of the ladies 4809/2: [This message has been edited by batang uliran (edited 01-23-2000).] |

The calatrava with leather strap in either men's or women's styles are readily available in the US new for about $6000. Sobrang laking patong diyan. Actually, I splurged for 2 watches I love - and I promise not to get anything else in the near future (my wife won't let me anyway!). No neither were patek but were of the same level of quality and much rarer! Let me know if you want me to direct you to a particular place here in the US. You can probably order it from here if you have a way to get it through customs. I can even refer you to a few places in Taiwan, HK or Singapore if you are so inclined. |
