there's nothing more sad than a poem talking about not having the right chance to show one's love to the object of its affection. i've always known this poem by heart because my college bestfriend wrote it and i was the one who edited it for school publication. the poem was rousing with feelings that seemed wanting to let out of the author's heart. at least, that's how it left me after reading it. it's simply written but nevertheless, so poignant. it was just late last year that my bestfriend admitted to whom he wrote it for. ME.

    Breaking Free

Awake in the silence of the night
Nothing to see but a lonely sight
Here I am holding myself tight
Not to give in, I just have to fight

Evening falls thru heavy tick of hours
The cries of sadness leave me deep scars
If I can wish, I’ll tell the stars
To free my heart surrounded with bars

Today is but just another day
For me thinking of what I need to say
Again trying not to lose my way
Keeping my distance from you if I may

and then fast forward to September last year when he finally was able to get in touch after years of not seeing and speaking to each other, he'd told me he's always reminded by landon pigg's song "can't let go" of the kind of unrequited love he had for me.

    "Can't Let Go"

Well you're the closest thing I have
To bring up in a conversation
About a love that didn't last
But I could never call you mine
'Cause I could never call myself yours
And if we were really meant to be
Well then we just defied destiny
It's not that our love died
    Just never really bloomed

    Well I can't let go
No, I can't let go of you
You're holding me back without even trying to.
    I can't let go
I can't move on from the past
Without lifting a finger you're holding me back.

And then we saw our paths diverge
And I guess I felt okay about it.
Until you got with another man,
    And then I couldn't understand
    Why it bothered me so.
How we didn't die we just
Never had a chance to grow.

    I can't let go

No, I can't let go of you
You're holding me back without even trying to.
    I can't let go
I can't move on from the past.
Without lifting a finger you're holding me back.

And it might not make much sense
To you or any of my friends
Though somehow still you affect the things I do
And you can't lose what you never had
    I don't understand why I feel sad
Every time I see you out with someone new.
    I can't let go
    No, I can't let go
No, I can't let go of you.

    I can't let go
No, I can't let go of you
You're holding me back without even trying to.
    I can't let go
I can't move on from the past
Without lifting a finger you're holding me back.

    I can't let go
No, I can't let go of you
You're holding me back without even trying to.
    I can't let go
I can't move on from the past.

    Tonight at Noon
    Adrian Henry

    Tonight at noon
Supermarkets will advertise 3p extra on everything
    Tonight at noon
Children from happy families will be sent to live in a home
Elephants will tell each other human jokes
America will declare peace on Russia
World War I generals will sell poppies on the street on November 11th
The first daffodils of autumn will appear
When the leaves fall upwards to the trees

    Tonight at noon
Pigeons will hunt cats through city backyards
Hitler will tell us to fight on the beaches and on the landing fields
A tunnel full of water will be built under Liverpool
Pigs will be sighted flying in formation over Woolton
And Nelson will not only get his eye back but his arm as well
White Americans will demonstrate for equal rights
In front of the Black house
And the monster has just created Dr. Frankenstein

    Girls in bikinis are moonbathing
Folksongs are being sung by real folk
Art galleries are closed to people over 21
Poets get their poems in the Top 20
There's jobs for everybody and nobody wants them
In back alleys everywhere teenage lovers are kissing in broad daylight
In forgotten graveyards everywhere the dead will quietly bury the living
    and
You will tell me you love me
    Tonight at noon

Poem made by biscuits by Anonymous

I will write a poem, hoping for luck
Wandering in a milieu of a so-called freedom
I cast to thee alphabets made of letters
And from letters to words, I gathered fragments
Rest thine head upon pillows of torment
Lying with myself in a deep slumber
From reality of thirst and major hunger
So I enjoy thy feast and devour
    Flesh, wine and wealth
But in my heart they shall not feed
For sleep is my only luxury
And in my shadow, I am so lukewarm
    Nothing ever really touches me
Not even the high level of artistry
But you came along with your radiant smile
I only offered a blithesome and silly joke
My hands are empty, there's nothing to offer
I am a huge blank, I don't want you to suffer
But yet I shall whisper to the breeze
That love and adoration will cross the mighty seas
My eyes have nothing to do with the verses of silence
But in this silence the wind blows my lullaby
Through the ears of your doubtful worries
Allowing all to penetrate without a valid licence
The smile of your face; stare of your eyes
Enthralled by the flickering fire in the heart
Eventually, I lost all my track of time
The curtains waved, the wakened fireflies
Though my body is waiting for unwanted love
For it is not lust that I hunger
But it is your love that will quench my thirst
I know I still see things in a different way
But your constellations come from the eternity of space
So I wrote a poem, waiting for luck?
Like tapestry jewelled hangs over the night
