What's your opinion on the new consumption taxes that are being mulled by the government? Personally I think I'd favor more consumption taxes, and less income taxes because the former are harder to avoid. I don't think it's anti-poor as long as the right commodities are taxed - anything high-end.

As usual the consumer is the one who has to pay the tax. A lot of times items which are already taxed are taxed again. And yes it is harder to avoid but in several instances the merchant just pockets consumption tax. Madaling dayain on their part...

I've said this before and I'll say it again. The main problem with tax collection is that many cheat and evade tax payment altogether. As things stand right now, 90% of the income tax burden is shouldered by salaried employees and self-employed businessmen and countless many smaller businesses pay little or nothing. The answer is to IMPROVE collection and not to impose new taxes.

I agree that better collection is the solution. Actually what I'm trying to determine is if consumption taxes are harder to avoid than income taxes. I would think so because there's a paper trail.

Another point is if it will result in a more equitable damage to consumers. The more you buy, the more you are taxed. Thus, as a consumer the tax is harder to avoid than income tax. Now whether the business that passed that tax on to you is remitting your payment to the government is another issue - that of collection.

I agree wholeheartedly! I just got my pay slip today and boy was I surprised. I was expecting to have a bigger net salary since I recently got promoted. Lo and behold, my net salary is even lesser than the money I was getting last year (at a lower rank). Turns out, as my salary increased, so did the tax bracket. Instead of a promotion, I was punished!

If I only knew the implications of promotion, I wouldn't have accepted it!
