    Dear Ms Santillan,

We are very much impressed by your ability to earn more than 8 million pesos in the last two years. Certainly we would like to know if you paid the corresponding income taxes for such income. Although the top rate is 32%, let us assume a tax rate of 30%. Did you happen to file your income tax returns in the last two years and paid a total tax of 2.4 million pesos, more or less? If you did, thank you very much for helping our government.

If you didn't, are you inviting us to report you to the Bureau of Internal Revenue for tax evasion under its R.A.T.E. (Run After Tax Evaders) program?

First, I want to share these two videos. The first one I find funny. The second one I find informative:
    Pyramid Scheme
    Failing in MLM

Second, here's my 2 cents. The good thing about MLM is that it gives the small guy who doesn't have millions in capital, a fighting chance to own a huge distribution franchise. If you learn the proper skills and duplicate, you can end up with a large organization that moves thousands of dollars of your company's products. Note that I mentioned proper skill. The reason why most MLM BOMs emphasize the need for dreams is that you need passion and motivation to improve your personality. You can't have an emotion that is made of glass. You will experience lots of rejection. You need to have 100% belief in your products and in your industry. Otherwise you will find it difficult to market/sell your product and opportunity. And just like any other business, if you can't sell/market your product/services, you might as well close shop.
The problem with MLM really is the failure rate. Just because the cost of entry is small, a lot of people, who really have no potential and who would otherwise ignore the opportunity, join and eventually lose steam after 1 month to 2 years. Unlike a McDonald's franchise that costs millions of pesos, an MLMer have to recruit business partners instead of employees. And there are more people who would choose the security of a stable job over the risk of business ownership, especially MLM. Also, as I mentioned, those who will spend 35M pesos for a McDonald's franchise would probably have a better entrepreneural mindset than someone who is only spending anywhere from 3K to 100K for an MLM opportunity.

So, if you can shell out millions of pesos and have no patience looking for business partners who are more interested in the business than you, go for the big franchises. If you don't have the money but you have an unstoppable attitude, the passion, the patience, and thick skin, go for MLM. If you have neither, learn to love your job and don't envy those who are successful in business because you'll never comprehend the hardships that they have to experience before they became successful.

    Cheers.

    A naïve commentary, I think.

It would have been better if you eased up on the MLM platitudes of dreams, attitude and passion, and gave us a bit more substance on how a business is inevitably affected by market conditions and the dynamics of economics. All businesses, regardless of capital requirements, must adapt and be nimble in a given market in order to thrive. Problem is, MLM doesn't allow for the flexibility and latitude to do so. This thing about MLM failures being pinned on recruits with no potential is really an old, tired MLM excuse. You said it yourself:
And just like any other business, if you can't sell/market your product/services, you might as well close shop.
Recruits ultimately realize they cannot compete with other similar products in the open market. Hence, they close shop, so to speak. The reality is that no product is being sold. What's being sold is the dream. Why do you think this entire forum is inundated with recruitment pitches?

MLM recruiters say that what they’re offering is a chance for the common tao to own a business. A few pesos, they say, can make you a millionaire if you work the system. This is flat-out propaganda and misrepresentation of the highest degree, in my opinion.

Many prospects make the mistake of getting sucked into the recruiters’ propaganda of “no harm in trying, you got nothing or very little to lose”. The cost of getting into an MLM may be affordable to the masses, but once you’re in the system, there are hidden costs to pay. In order to be eligible for commissions and/or bonuses, recruits are required to either purchase a minimum quantity of product, attain and/or maintain a specific volume, or pay some sort of a periodic subscription fee.

What’s really happening here is that the MLM company is turning the recruit into a de facto customer. While the MLM company guarantees itself a minimum profit from each of their customer-recruits, the recruits are strung out to make profit on their own. In addition to periodic minimum requirements, other related expenses have to be accounted for. Every centavo spent in the pursuit of business is a deduction against income. Many recruits end up with either a zero or minus net income.

When you sign up for an MLM, what you’re really signing up for is a promise to be a loyal customer for the MLM company, the right to sell their product exclusively and the permission to recruit others into the system. This is a fact that no self-proclaimed MLM professional can deny. In other words, an MLM recruit is a captive customer and an unsalaried salesman. Given this circumstance, is it accurate to call it a business?

The real start-up cost of a business is not determined solely by sign-up fees in the case of MLM, or business registration and/or business permit costs in the case of a normal business. Yet, MLM promoters would want you to believe otherwise. The bulk of capital requirements is rooted in the operation of the business, such as product purchases, client base development, and other related business expenses. A normal business would determine all anticipated administrative and operational expenses prior to getting into the business. Hence, capital requirements are usually high. On the other hand, MLM ignores all of this. If you take the MLM sign-up fees and add the subsequent administrative and operational expenses of running around and trying to sell over-priced products while conning people into the business, your capital expense could be more than that of a micro-business enterprise.

The chance of having a profitable business has nothing to do with the cost of signing up. A good business will exhibit good fundamentals. MLM recruiters will often say that the standard rules of business do not apply because MLM is not a standard business. Pardon my French, but this is “le bullshette”. The market doesn’t make any special provisions for MLM-based products. When you have a dropout rate in the upper 90th percentile and an average distributor gross income of a few hundred bucks, those are not good fundamentals. In fact, research shows that less than 1% of MLMers ever make a profit. Regardless of whether the capital requirement is 1 peso or 1M pesos, if proper due diligence shows that long-term profitability is abysmal, no business investor in their right mind would even touch it.

When you rely on the MLM recruiter’s propaganda and ignore business basics such as product, pricing, positioning, competition and saturation, among other things, that so-called business is kaput right from the start. It’s rather oxymoronic to sell the idea that MLM is a millionaires’ business when the vast majority of recruits are barely making a pittance and are dropping out en masse.

... see my related post on previous page ...

Now, regarding this top MLM list and top MLM prediction of 2014 list:

    1) What reputable industry source published these lists?
    2) On what basis were these MLM companies ranked?
    3) What is the relevance of these lists as far as MLM recruits and prospects are concerned?

Let’s suppose for the sake of argument that these lists are legit. Here are my thoughts:

Big whoop! So what? All it means is that the owners of these MLM companies are making good money on their business.

However, for all you MLM recruits, these MLM companies do not belong to you. They are not your companies. You have no standing in their business. Why, then, would you go around and claim that they are your companies? Why would you tout that your company is on the top of the list? Your business is legally and specifically limited to the selling of their products. These companies are your suppliers, nothing more. That is the extent of your involvement with them. In a real business sense, these lists are only relevant to those who own these companies. If you wanted a list that made more sense to the MLM recruits who are in the business of selling the products, then you should be showing a list that tabulated the average MLM distributor income, to wit:

Company A avg distributor income = xxx pesos
Company B avg distributor income = yyy pesos
Company C avg distributor income = zzz pesos
    ... and so on

What the MLM company makes is irrelevant because you, as an independent salesman of their product, do not get a piece, not even a crumb, of their income. What’s relevant is the income you actually make by selling their product. A good indicator of that is the average income you and your peers make.

Latest gross income statistic for 2011 published by the industry:
National average, distributor gross income = Php 639 per month.

By the way, don’t forget to deduct expenses and taxes, in which case, you might end up with zero or negative net income.

And, why is The Trump Network on the list? FYI, it no longer exists. You people are so amazingly gullible.
