Apparently they do live among us in the real world ! Talk about the anti-thesis of the vaunted "men and women for others" motto. Frankly, I'm not surprised that a rich elitist atenista snob would consciously commit academic and social suicide by posting a commentary that would have made a dodo bird proud. But to be fair to our gossip-girl friend, let's put it in context - maybe we were expecting too much from dimwit schmuck like her. Come on, let's be realistic. It is apparent that she's the Ateneo's local version of Paris Hilton. She's there primarily for s*x and eye candy. Just don't expect her to say anything vaguely intelligent

Police your ranks? What's this a Gestapo state? Ateneans come in all shapes, sizes, and ideological preferences. Believe it or not, Ateneo is not a very homogeneous group. She doesn't represent the whole of Ateneo. She doesn't represent me. More importantly, she has the ABSOLUTE RIGHT to behave like a spolied brat. She has the right to be naive. She has the right to be conya (inspite of all the men for others mantra). The immersion program is the price you have to pay for an Ateneo education. I neither have ill will nor great feelings about it. But since Ateneo is still a University (which presupposes the freedom and pluralism of thought or even lack of ), she has that right to lambast it and make negative remarks about her "field trip." Yes, even in a great Jesuit institution, one has the right to be dumb, young and full of c*m. Poor Paris.

I'm certain that not all ateneans are like Tracy and it is also true that UP has its own share of Paris Hilton types. However the actions of a few, if tolerated by the majority may often be misconstrued as acceptable behavior by the whole group. My graduate school friends who are ex-Ateneans have informed me that in other blogs, there are a considerable number of Tracy apologists doing the rounds justifying her actions (gasp ! shocking don't you think ?). I was also informed that she even came up with a pseudo-press release trivializing her actions. Personally (opinion lang ha ? wag magalit

)I don't think there is such a thing as ABSOLUTE right to anything (yes, spoiled brat included). It breeds contempt, arrogance and in the case of Madam Tracy - insensitivity. Thomas Hobbes commented a great deal on this matter. When fratmen kill neophytes or are involved in mindless rumbles, it gives UP a bad name. This is precisely the reason why the school administration, and student groups within campus publicly condemn such actions so as to inform the public that these thugs don't represent UP as a whole. I think I saw one of those "apologists" of hers. But she is entitled to a defender anyway with the way people are really bashing her.

What she did was inexcusable, irresponsible, and goes against everything her school stands for. But if you look at it this way, her true fault lies on her not being discreet enough in her opinions. Much as I do not like what she did (it gives Ateneans a bad name) I believe we should let the school decide on what to do with this issue (since she's commenting on an immersion that is required by the university).

I hope that she's made to really understand the gravity of what she did (it's not about your dark humor, Ms. Borres). We are all entitled to our opinions but there are times when we should be careful with what we say or do. Not everything should be said, most especially in the internet.

We can't tell her to change especially if she doesn't want to. But at least we can tell her that there are times that we really have to shut up and keep some things to ourselves.

After one of the simbang gabi masses in the Ateneo i ran into some of my former theo profs and asked them about the "the Tracy Borres phenomenon". They obviously weren't exactly pleased about the whole matter.
