Dela Hoya vs Pacquiao

Arum tells Pacquiao, Roach: Shut up
By Abac Cordero
Sunday, July 20, 2008

Bob Arum has issued a gag order on Freddie Roach and Manny Pacquiao as the Top Rank big boss works on a possible fight between the Filipino champ and Oscar dela Hoya in December.

“I have asked Freddie to be quiet. And so has Manny,” Arum told boxingconfidential.com a day after Roach came up with statements Arum said isn’t helping them lure Dela Hoya.

“All these public remarks about Oscar dela Hoya and about how Oscar can’t pull the trigger anymore are not helpful to our cause,” said Arum, who’s been silently dealing with Golden Boy.

Arum, Roach and Pacquiao will sit down later this week in Las Vegas.

Roach was all over the boxing news when he talked about Arum’s plan to pit Pacquiao against Humberto Soto in November, when they could and should go for bigger fights like Dela Hoya.

Roach said they’re “missing the boat” if Pacquiao goes on to fight opponents like Edwin Valero or Soto, fights that the two-time Trainer of the Year said would be hard to sell on pay-per-view.

Roach said Pacquiao should instead face Dela Hoya by the end of the year, then British superstar Ricky Hatton next year, and probably retire as the “greatest boxer of all time.”

Roach said he believes Pacquiao can knock out Dela Hoya whom he said is “older” and “can’t pull the trigger anymore.” The fight, if held, can be staged at 147 lbs.

“I go on Filipino radio and all I do is praise Oscar. Freddie has got to be quiet because his remarks are just pissing Oscar off,” Arum told Michael Marley from Las Vegas.

“Look, Freddie is the trainer and it’s not his place to be making these kind of public comments about Oscar, not now when we’re trying to negotiate a fight.

“We want Oscar to come to the table and then we can see if we can put together this Dec. 6 fight with him and Manny. It may be Oscar’s ‘Last Hurrah,’” Arum added.

Dela Hoya, who has only fought once since losing to Floyd Mayweather in June last year, is on the way out, and wants one big fight – and this could be against Pacquiao or Miguel Cotto.

In fact, boxrec.com records show that Dela Hoya is booked on Dec. 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. But there’s a big question mark on the opponent’s name.

“I am hoping he will want to fight either of my guys, Miguel Cotto (also of Top Rank) or Manny. If we can make Manny against Oscar, then Freddie can say whatever the f__k he wants,” Arum said.

Then fill in the blanks: Dela Hoya vs Pacquiao.

The size differential is overwhelming.

Height: Oscar-5' 10.5", Pac-5' 6.5"
Reach: Oscar-73", Pac-67"
Proposed official 'weigh-in' weights: Oscar-150 lbs. ('catch weight'), Pac-140 lbs.

Scenario. After the official weigh-ins, both Oscar and Pac rehydrates themselves overnight for their optimum fighting weight the next day.

Oscar comes in at around 154-160 lbs.
Pac at around 145-147 lbs.

An exhibition match of a middleweight against a bloated welterweight! That's easily a 10+ lbs. weight advantage for Oscar.

This is mad. Nothing more than an interesting circus freak show.

-------

From another perspective.

Pac wins this fight, he gets a ton of $$$ ($20m), he gets the respect as an ATG.
Pac loses this fight, he still gets a ton of $$$ ($20m), he still gets the respect as a warrior who fought a bigger lion.

It's a win/win situation for Pac either way.

Oscar wins this fight, he gets a ton of $$$, but he loses respect for fighting a smaller man when he coulda opted for Cotto, Mayweather Jr. or Trinidad.
Oscar loses this fight, he still gets a ton of $$$, which he already has tons more in his Swiss bank accounts, but he damages his boxing legacy for losing his farewell fight to a smaller man.

It's a lose/lose situation for Oscar.

We're just hearing from one side of the fence, Bob Arum's Top Rank.

There's actually other interesting options for Oscar and Golden Boy Promotions:
*a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
*the long-awaited rematch with Felix "Tito" Trinidad
*Miguel Cotto

all are mega-$$$ super fights.

If Manny cant carry the first 2 rounds with Dela Hoya, the way he did with Diaz, it would be a fight too painful to watch to the end. Prediction: Dela Hoya KOs Manny in 5th.

This is a Circus Fight!

But if this fight pushes through? I think Oscar can not KO Pacman because Manny will be to quick and crafty for him and i think freddie will formulate a Hit and Run Tactics againts Oscar just to frustrate him.

Manny has nothing to lose with a fight against Oscar.

It's a money fight.

Pero yun lang, parang lokohan lang.

Oscar against Manny. Parang entertainment show na lang.

^nothing to lose but everything to gain (other than the moolah) in the (unlikely?) event that he wins.

In the same vein, he has nothing to gain and a lot to lose by taking on "lesser" fighters like Valero or Soto...

Cool

I totally agree with analysis you see the big difference. but remember Dela Hoya used to knock opponents in the lower weight class. Remember these guys Rafael Ruelas, Jorge Pajes, Hernandez,
Julio Ceasar Chavez these are super featherweights and Lightweights. when Oscar moved up Arturo Gatti and Fernando vargas, Mayorga and some other names. But beside with these other opponents Trinidad, Mosley, Hopkins, Mayweather and the last one was Steve Forbes they fought May of this year. Freddie Roach Base his analysis in Oscar last fight with Steve Forbes. Forbes Used to be the lightweight Champion several years ago they fought and Oscar win by unanimous decision. if Forbes can easily connect to Oscar and his not that quick. So imagine if Pacquiao is the one connecting on Oscar, he'll be out.I will not rule out Freddie Roach statement the possibility is there. Once they are inside the ring then we will find out. I don't think Oscar will catch Manny Pacquiao and do some *** kicking, its not gonna happen.

that's why i think crucial yung magiging result ng Cotto-Margarito eh. If Cotto wins, Oscar should fight him instead of Pacquiao. If he loses, wala nang appeal yung Dela Hoya-Cotto.. and i read somewhere that Oscar is reluctant to fight another Mexican. so out na si Margarito. who else is out there for him?

id rather for Pacquiao to fight Valero instead and expose that cocky fraud.

De La Hoya: Pacquiao, Cotto, Margarito … anyone!

The Golden Boy willing to face anyone in Dec. 6th Grand Finale

FightNews.com

While the boxing world will be fixated at the upcoming battle this weekend, between welterweight champions Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito, one man will have an invested interest in the bout.

Oscar De La Hoya will not be particularly cheering for either fighter, but one of them could potentially be the opponent for De La Hoya’s last fight in December.

December 6th, 2008 is slowly approaching and De La Hoya is in need of an opponent to face in his grand finale. Just about anybody weighing 135 to 160 pounds would be willing to fight De La Hoya for a sizeable payday. However, De La Hoya does not want an easy pushover in his last bout.

So, it could be Miguel Cotto or Antonio Margarito. Or Sergio Mora or Felix Trinidad.

Or Manny Pacquiao.

“There is a possibility of a fight with Manny Pacquiao,” said De La Hoya.

“In his bout with David Diaz, I expected him to win. He brought speed and strength. I feel that he needs another bout with (Juan Manuel) Marquez. The bout with David Diaz did not sell the way they thought it would."

“Does Pacquiao need Marquez? Absolutely.”

If the Pacquiao does not work out, De La Hoya does not name a particular fighter he would prefer to face come December.

I told Richard Schaefer to get me the biggest fight possible,” says De La Hoya. “Whoever it is, that is who we want. There is no particular fighter. Sergio Mora is a possibility. The winner of the Cotto-Margarito fight would be a great way to end my career. There is a lot of options. I am willing to fight whomever.”

In a jab at Mayweather, De La Hoya predicted that the now-former pound-for-pound king will come back to boxing.

“I hope he stays retired. But, I know one thing: Floyd will come back!

In regard to his own retirement, De La Hoya makes it clear that December 6th will be the last time fight fans will see him as a professional fighter inside the ring.

This will be my last fight,” he says. “There is no doubt about it.”

Read the rest of the article here, cuz I just picked up the interesting lines.

....

Reading between the lines, Oscar is contemplating of setting up the rubber match between his boxer, J.M.Marquez, and the Pacmonster.

I have a gut feeling that Oscar will eventually fight Floyd Mayweather Jr.

If Cottos loses the fight against Margarito, De La Hoya may just look for another fighter.

Mayweather's probably just waiting for Cotto to get out of the picture.

Another De La Hoya-Mayweather fight's good to watch. Not that it's gonna be as exciting as watching Manny in the ring, but hey, it's the Golden Boy down to his last fight.

As for Pacman, going 147 is a dangerous thing to do.
