Regine’s turn
“Unlike the Korean actress who originally played the role, I did not gain 15 pounds to flesh out my character,” Velasquez tells the entertainment press during the show’s launch. “They required me to wear a fat suit. Since the size of my face is rather small, I have to press my chin to my neck to create the illusion of having a double chin. I do not want to put prosthetics on my face because it would take time. Effort talaga to be Kim though baka nanaba din ako because there is too much food in the set,” she laughs.
More popularly known as Asia’s Songbird, Velasquez is also credited for having box-office movies to her name. In television, she is seen weekly in SOP, GMA 7’s Sunday noontime fare. The artist is definitely excited to take on this new challenge. “It’s more difficult to make people laugh than make them cry, and I think that is a reality that we all know. I like doing romantic comedies because I am very comfortable with the genre. Although I recently realized that doing Sam Soon is very challenging because this is not your usual screwball comedy, it also has many drama scenes. I have to come up with real emotions most especially when people discriminate my character, ‘yung ‘pag sinasabihan na mataba or matanda na siya. However, my writers are all wicked in a very good way. They know how to balance the dramatic and comedic elements. They made everything funny even with the way I look and react to things. Not to mention the cast that supports me are some of the best performers that we have.”
Is she a better comedienne than a singer? “I love that question!” she guffaws, quickly adding, “Well, I think being considered a comedienne is a great compliment, so I hope people would watch us and like what we are offering them.”
Velasquez is also aware that some people think she and Fernandez make an odd pair. She explains, “Well, the role requires a woman who is slightly older than the guy since the age peg of Cyrus is really that of a younger man. I must admit that I had my apprehensions at first, and I think Mark felt the same way. Slowly, however, the rapport is building up and we are starting to have chemistry; the connection is already there. Mark is a very good actor. He is willing to try anything and everything, which is a good thing. Right now, I am very comfortable with him already so go-go-go na ako.”
Fernandez, for his part, reveals that being in a comedy, after playing villain roles in the past, came at an opportune time, and he was happy to be working with Velasquez.
“When you are in a scene with Ms. Regine, talagang mai-inspire ka. You really must give your best. At natural na lalabas na gusto mong galingan, gusto mong pagandahin lalo kasi she is with you. Not everyone has the opportunity to work with her so now that I have it, I am really enjoying every minute. She is very humble, sobrang down-to-earth. She always talks to you prior to doing a take so that relaxes me.”
Velasquez also shares her similarities with her character Kim. “There was a point in my life when I could relate so much with Kim only because I felt the pressure of being single, having no boyfriend, and you are at a certain age when people wonder why you are not married. And as women, there is more pressure since the biological clock is ticking. With the character of Kim, she felt the pressure because people around her were pressuring her to tie the knot or shed off weight, but if you ask her, she does not care how people think because she is happy with her life. Personally, I feel blessed that I have found my joys in life, which is singing and acting and, of course, my family is always there to support and love me, so I am good.”
Joining Regine and Mark in Kim Sam Soon are Wendell Ramos as Harvey, Sam Soon’s ex-fiance; Nadine Samonte as Hannah, Cyrus’ first love and ex-fiance as well; Eugene Domingo as Chef Dina, the restaurant’s head chef; Carmi Martin as Mrs. Ruiz, Cyrus’ domineering mother; John Lapus as Marcus, Mrs. Ruiz’s spy and secretary; and Ms. Tessie Tomas as Sonia, Sam Soon’s loving mother.
Kim Sam Soon, with Dominic Zapata as director, airs nightly after Dyesebel on the GMA Telebabad block.
