FUNNY SONGBIRD IN KIM SAM SOON
Before I begin my article, let us first read the following excerpts...

1) Manila Bulletin, June 26, 2008 -- There is no doubt REGINE HAS ALWAYS HANDLED COMEDY WELL, but deglamorized to the fullest, this, she admitted to be quite unfamiliar territory even to a ROMANTIC COMEDY SWEETHEART like her. "This is by far the MOST CHALLENGING ROLE of my life because it's not easy playing a person na medyo nabubugbog sometimes," Regine told the media during "Kim Sam Soon's" launch at the Glass Garden in Pasig City. "Maraming mga eksena na nasasaktan ako dito," she added referring to the SLAPSTICK leaning of the "Kim Sam Soon" comedy.

Star, July 9, 2008 -- This is actually not hard to explain since REGINE (VELASQUEZ), aside from being the BIGGEST FEMALE SINGER in the land also EXCELS in LIGHT DRAMATIC FARE...Mark and his leading lady only have praises - which sound genuine - for each other. "We're aware that some skeptics were saying we didn't have chemistry," shares Mark, "but personally, I believe that we have it. If there really is none, considering HOW GOOD REGINE IS IN COMEDY, then chemistry will develop in time."
3) Phil. Daily Inquirer, July 9, 2008 -- REGINE VELASQUEZ is such a NATURAL in "Kim Samsoon" as a fat chef who's hungry for love. I asked her BF Ogie Alcasid if he gave Regine comedy acting tips, since he's a "Bubble Gang" mainstay. "No need to teach her," beams Ogie. "She's NATURALLY FUNNY."
4) The Manila Time, June 27, 2008 -- (Eugene) Domingo shares that she also GETS INSPIRATION FROM FELLOW ACTORS and industry workers who have a TRUE PASSION for their craft. Take the case of Regine Velasquez, the lead character in Kim Sam Soon. “I have worked with Regine in the past and we have this unspoken understanding to CONNECT at a certain level in order for us to be EFFECTIVE in portraying our roles.
5) Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP), June 28, 2008 -- NATURAL COMEDIENNE. Sa pagsasama nila rito sa AKO SI KIM SAMSOON, na-discover ni Ms. Tessie na isa palang NATURAL COMEDIENNE si Regine. Sa mga naging eksena nila, may MAGANDANG TIMING daw si Regine lalo na sa pagbitiw ng punchlines. Minsan naman daw ay PHYSICAL and pagpapatawa nila at WALA RAW KAARTEHAN si Regine sa mga eksenang nababatuk-batukan siya, nadadapa, o natutumba.
"Nakakatuwa kay Regine ay MARUNONG SIYANG MAG-IMPROVISE sa mga eksena niya. Kung sa palagay niya ay kulang, ipapaulit niya at mas dadagdagan niya. For her stature, nakakagulat na pumapayag siyang papangitin sa role niya o gawin siyang katatawanan. It only means that she's a VERY PROFESSIONAL ARTIST. Para sa kanya ang trabaho ay trabaho. And she's very serious with it.
"Wala kang mararamdaman o makikitang may diva attitude siya. Marami na akong nakatrabaho na mga artista and marami rin sa kanila ang may kakaibang attitude. May ayaw pumangit ang hitsura sa TV, may ayaw magpabatok, may ayaw magpatulak, at may mahilig magpahintay sa set. Iba-iba ang ugali nila.
"With Regine, wala akong makitang negative sa kanya. Kaya hindi ako magugulat if people admire her because she's VERY DOWN TO EARTH at MARUNONG MAKISAMA sa lahat," papuri ni Ms. Tessie sa kanyang co-star.

Regine Velasquez, The Asia's Songbird, is no stranger to comedy. Before Kim Sam Soon, I watched the Philippine Diva in her biggest movie with Robin Padilla, TILL I MET YOU, and she was really wacky. Everytime she threw punchlines at Robin, her natural comedic flare showed. Especially in her drunk scene with Robin where she drank too much and spoke like a drunkard, that's enough for Mr. Padilla to praise her. He even said that he wouldn't be surprised if Regine would be nominated for her funny acting. And indeed, Regine was nominated for Best Actress at the Film Academy of the Philippines last year.
However, some said Regine was kinda "overacting" in her latest TV comedy, Ako si Kim Sam Soon. Actually, for the sake of everyone's further knowledge, the comedic acting in KSS is supposed to be "OA". In the original Korean telenovela of KSS, the actors used a lot of "physical comedy" (as silly face or clownish movement) and "slapstick" (physical violence or activities). This form of comedy is never subtle but EXAGGERATED in execution. So it's no surprise see Regine and other actors knocking their heads (batukan), slapping faces (sampalan), and doing a lot of facial contortions or cathartic roleplaying while delivering their lines with precise timing and skillful delivery. Literally speaking, being "OA" is certainly NOT EASY, and involves a degree of MASTERY in acting.
The other seasoned comediennes in KSS as Tessie Tomas and Eugene Domingo know this kind of comedic device. Both have theatrical background that's why it's second-nature for them to act larger-than- life on the small screen. They have been recognized many times for their comedic talent from doing physical comedy and slapstick in their past TV/Stage/Movie stints. Regine has already worked with Eugene (in last year's blockbuster romantic-drama movie, Paano Kita Iibigin) but it's her first time work with Ms. Tomas. Both have nothing but praises for Regine's professionalism and comedic talent. Regine is indeed lucky to have them as powerhouse supporting casts.
And as the climbing audience-rating of KSS is concerned, more and more televiewers every night are certainly lauging out loud. And that's a real confirmation that Regine and her co-star's "OA" comedic acting is effectively FUNNY.
