libis is sorta a coming of age gimmick place...but i think it is overrated.the only place i dig there is blue onion..the rest are crap.
malate is sort of had a resuscitation after being outshined by rockwell strip...it is still a coll place to go after all these years..i particularly like fidel.

I never really liked Libis. True, there are a lot of good places to eat in, but I've always found it too crowded and just too "urban." By that, I mean too busy, too loud, too fast-paced. And I don't really like places where people go to "be seen."
I like Malate because its mood is warmer and more relaxed. Maybe it's my age as well. The younger crowd hangs out at Libis more, while my friends and I like hanging out in Malate more. There are less pretentious people in Malate now -- thank God these people are trooping somewhere else. I miss Pepe and Pilar. I miss Luna. Thank goodness Cafe Adriatico is still there. You can just sit there for hours and keep talking till the early morning.
Maybe that's why I like Malate. There are a lot of party places here, but there are even more places where you can have great conversations. There's nothing like a good cup of tea, a yummy dessert, a terrific companion and good conversation to have a wonderful evening. ;)

personally i like the makati crowd better...especially those people who hang at the rockwell strip. there are times that the party spirit in makati seems dead and dreary but there's no place like rockwell strip.mati,dish...ano pa? outside rockwell, you can find il ponticello, wesabi, flute and pravda.personally, these are totally cool places to unwind and just get away from the craziness of everyday life. what else..yeah, wherelse! do i need to say more? this place rocks!! gotta love the decor.
libis, libis. i never liked this place actually. napakaraming wanna-be.the only redeeming and saving factor of this strip is outback.
malate is a cool place so to speak.the artsy crowd hang there.napaka-unpretentious ng people.two thumbs up.have to agree with solace, i miss pepe and pilar.:(

I loved hanging out on their balcony and just watch people along Orosa. I liked their 60s-like furniture. That was my favorite nightcap place! I'd have their yummy champorado with tuyo. :D *sigh* Kaka-miss talaga.

NEVER liked Libis. when i went there, i felt old and very bored. i think the place is just brimming with 14-turning-24 kids and 40 yr old women trying to be 21. too bad that the place has nice buildings and physical "atmosphere". but the crowd is just too..proletariat for my own taste.
there was a time, i'd say 5 years ago, Malate was the "in" thing. then the bad crowd came, i hated going there for quite a bit..it took awhile for Malate to have it's rebirth..and i dare say, the last time i was there(december-january), the place is just on the verge of being perfect yet again. great places like Fidel(though old time fave Pepe and Pilar is missing..so is matina) are starting to take shape. beats the hell out of libis.
but, then again, i like hanging out in Makati myself.

ako kse i grew up sa malate area, parang malungkot na ngayon yung ambience dun atska super konti na ng tao. Nakakalungkot lang dahil nalulugi na yung mga bars. Libis naman medyo malayo for people living in the South pero mukhang masaya and I've heard medyo mura daw dun. Pero **** nothing will beat the energy of the Makati area.

I love MALATE.
Like what most of you have said about LIBIS, it's over-crowded with kids trying out their first cigarette and what not. It's too young for me and I'm only 23. Everyone is wearing the same thing, all the girls oops kids have the same silhouette. There's no diversity.
solace took the words out of my mouth. Malate is more relaxed, comfortable, UN-PRETENTIOUS, trendy, and diverse. I've never seen a fight there, nor have I heard major complaints. The mood is just so easy and pleasant. As opposed to Rockwell with all the wannabe 'in' people and their 'new cars pare' and constant competition on who has the biggest set of 'pearl earrings'. Don't get me wrong, girls in pearls are nice but too much of the same thing just isn't fun.
I especially like Ladida, Fidel, and ACQUARIO in Malate :)

Libis is incomparable to Malate! Just look at the architecture of Malate, yes there's been a proliferation of modern facades but the ambience of the place, its rich stories and invaluable history are still intact. I love being "lost" in Malate's small lanes and discover small, interesting places tucked away in surrepticious streets and corners. The FEEL of the place encapsulates psuedo-spanish traditions with a tinge of modernity and heavily laced with FUN and EXCITEMENT!
FREAK I MISS it na! :unhappy:

I checked out Libis a month ago and didn't enjoy it. It was lifeless. I expected a lot pa naman. oh well.

the first time i went to Libis, there was this group of girls who are all clad with skimpy bluses and mini (super!)skirts...i mean talk about desperate..they have "TRYING TOO HARD" stamped on their foreheads.that's what i hate about Libis. too much wanna-be crowds who hang there just to be seen.

Well, I'm not a big Libis fan but I don't really like Malate.
Ang hirap ng parking sa Malate and I don't like the crowd that frequents the bars that have bands playing. Iba talaga yung crowd eh. But I have to admit that if we're just talking about chillin' out like in coffee shops, Malate definitely has the ambiance. It is, after all, the original coffee place even before sipping lattes and cappucinos became in style (read: pre-Starbucks days).
But the bars in Malate just don't do it for me.
For gimmicks, I prefer Timog and Makati.

yes u people are sooo damn right, libis is filled with wannabe older kids, and tryin to be younger people. :nerd: :disgust:
almost everyone who go there are ''jologistas'' :hiphop: since it is just a walking distance from the squatters area beside blue ridge...:yuck:
and the clubs...parang super desperate...they let minors enter their super wild clubs...i even got the chance to hang out in culture club...i'm only 15!! i dont even look 15, most people say i look 12, height lang panlaban ko coz im taller than most adults... they didnt even ask me how old i was!!! parang they're so desperate to have customers, to earn money,

kung kayo naiinis sa mga wannabes ng libis. e pano pa kaya kami na nagwowork dun?un tipong titingnan kami ng mga gumigimik kse naka simpleng jeans and shirt lang kami kase magdidinner lang naman kami. kala mo pa kung sino tumingn parang sinasabi ba e "yukk ang baduy". kaya nga kami we make it a point na isuot *** ids namin when we go to jack's loft or dun sa mga places na frequent nila.kainis dba?

Medyo patay na ngayon sa Malate. But between Libis & Malate, I still prefer the latter. Puro mga chikiting sa Libis. Pag andun ako, pakiramdam ko ang tanda ko na talaga. I like the Malate bars/restos. And the crowd, you'll see & meet all sorts of people. Unlike sa Libis, magkakamukha ang mga tao.
I miss LITO, that gay vagabond who claimed to be a former New York fashion designer. We used to treat him to a bottle or 2 of Blue Ice, while he told us stories of his once-successful career. He carried around this big bag na puro damit ang laman (designer clothes daw), tapos syempre aalukin niya kaming bumili. He's okay. Hindi naman siya mapilit kapag tumatanggi kami.
And also that Jamaican-looking guy w/ dreadlocks. Can't recall his name. He's one of those Malate characters, too. Kaso pusher daw 'yun.
Tsk, I miss Malate. I miss Orosa. It's the only gimik place in Manila where you could do just about anything and no one would give a damn.

Ei thanks sa mga opinions and suggestions niyo.;) Anywayz... Most of you prefer malate and rockwell/makati. I really haven't been in malate. Sa Libis lang and makati. Yah you're right peeps... Lahat ng tao sa libis gusto maging "IN" sila kaya masyado silang "pa show-off" diba? Pero honestly lang, dami din magaganda sa libis like yung mga resto nila and party houses. Sa makati naman sarap din mag hang-out kasi perfect talaga yung atmosphere. Ano naman ang mga bars sa malate? I'll check it out na lang pero suggest pa kayo ng maganda & very interesting places here na pwde mag hang-out or mag party! Thanks ulit! :teehee:

Ok din naman sa Libis e. Daming nice places, kaya lang it's the crowd that irks me. Ok sana kung wala masyadong mga pretentious people.
Malate is still the right place for me. Lalo na if you want/need good places to hang-out.

Malate may be int the doldrums, but I think its popularity will re-surge in time

does it really depend on popularity? Like for example.. You'll only go there when it's part of a rumor or because it's popular. But it depends on how the place works and what others say... "may ibubuga!";)

i don't think malate is 'dead'..i just think that the original people who hung out there(circa 1995) are back to reclaim the area. malate was THE place to be around 1999 to 2000..then of course, the saturation just took away the thrill and the novelty. what makes malate the thing again? because it went back to what it used to be..a great hang out place where people are more laid back, have great conversations until the wee hours of the morning and just have a good time. i really like how they re-invented the orosa strip...while libis, jesus..i'm just 23 and i get headaches and i feel a tad old. mass consumption ain't my thing anymore. and i really don't think it's just a matter of popularity... my friends and i prefer the places where only a few know...once everybody talks about it or writes about it in every society column, we move to another place.
fidel, ACQUARIO, ladida rock!

I beg to disagree. Malate is so not dead. I'm there almost three times a week: Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. It's not dead at all. It only seems dead because the usual hangouts pick up at 10 or 11. Malate is alive from 1 - 3.
unagi - You're so right. Fidel, Ladida, and ACQVARIO rock! We probably run into each other.
Fidel and ACQVARIO are probably the classiest bars/lounges I've been to in Manila.
maush here are some suggestions:
Places in Malate that I LOVE :)
Fidel
Acqvario
Ladida
Komiks
Havana
Cafe Adriatico
Hap Chan
Cafe Breton
Raj
Bravo
tons and tons more that i forget at the moment. Stick to the Orosa strip, Nakpil, and Adriatico circle :)
You don't know what you're missing until you go to Malate.

A few years ago during the pre-Libis era. Malate and the Fort was crawling with wannabes...
During the pre-Malate/pre-Fort era, Makati was crawling with wannabes...
I deduce that whatever the in-thing is, that's where the wannabes hang out. That's reality for us.
Maybe at some point we were wannabes ourselves. Come on, admit it. I bet some of you guys were part of the pre-Malate/pre-Fort Makati wannabes. We were once highschool kiddies trying to hang out at Makati. :)
Just shows that we are getting old and we already think of these kiddies the way the older generation once thought of us. :)
Personally, I still prefer Makati during the weekdays (less smoky and less noisy, an ideal place to go after a hard day at the office). Besides, I never appreciated the weekend crowd (anywhere for that matter). I find it too pretentious and I find the smoky air distasteful. I really like it at Il Ponticello (Azurri rocks!) and Rockwell.
I never liked Malate and I only like Libis during the weekdays and Sundays.

the place never fails to amaze me
becaue it reinvents itself
new places:
a japanese minimalist-designed sake or whatever place
in fornt of episode and verve
and yes...
di ko alam kung bad o good itong development na ito
merong mala-coyote ugly na bar
swingers yata (where politixx used to be, opposite casa armas)
di ko makita sa labas kung bakla ba o babae iyong nagsasayaw
saka me ginagawang bargo
sa tabi ng fidel...
why? whay??? whhhhaaaaayyyyyy?

Ibig nyong sbabihin you're not one of those wannabes? Then how come you're looking for the crowd. Bakit, when looking for a place to hang out, you would like the place because of the crowd. Kung wala nang crowd hindi naba "in" yun? So, kung nasan pala ang magagandang crowd, yun ang "in".
I think that should not be the case. If you like the place, you like the place not because people hang out there but because you like the place period. Kahit mga taxi driver pa ang nakatambay doon kung gusto mo yung lugar oks dapat diba?
I have been hanging out in malate ever since.......

Yes, it's part of the consideration. I wouldn't want to hang out at a place primarily infested by boisterous 16 or 17-year old kids. I want some place where I could talk to diverse but interesting people.

hey I've never been to libis. My impossible schedule permits it. and what's really funny is that I live right next to libis... (or thereabouts..)
I like malate though. Excellent place. You can go there and just be yourself... I think the fact that there's a dress code sort of limit one's fun... you tend to get so aggravated by the fact that you're not dressed for the place... or overdressed.
I went to makati a couple of times and felt like an askal amongst dressed up poodles... heehee...
Malate is relaxed and cool... people are of the unpretentious sort... well, at least most of the time. Well you do get the types that lord it around in their club gear (i.e. cool ako, ikaw hinde!!!) but well, you can't get everything.
i miss Cafe Caribana. I wish it were still around. I remember chillin out at Third World Cafe all the time in college (cheapest submarines around - beer with lambanog) Other good old places include verve (i haven't been gimiking in years.. is it still around???) and I remember Blue Cafe (where verve is...) the first ultra cool gay club...
I've also never partied hard at clubs, so the relaxed bob marleyish atmosphere of malate rocks with me...

Sa Libis... madaming parking at tabi tabi lahat ng gimik places in one place.. sa malate.. pamatay yung parking tapos if you park in one place.. medyo kalat yung mga gimik places depending on where you want to go.
pero some of the most ok gimik places are in Malate.. kaso I think they better put more security lang nga.. :)
