View Full Version : UP et al and RP's Global Competitiveness

I don't know what, but I think education is one of the factors, if not the only, to be blamed if the rating of a country's global competitiveness is low.
And, I don't know why, but somehow I also think that UP, as the country's premier academic institution, must be the first to feel alarmed about the sad fate of our country's performance in the global arena.
Based from the article on Asian Countries and Global Competitiveness published in the Philippine Graphics in August 2001, the Philippines ranked poorly according to a study by some prestigious research team.
And then, too, I don't know how, but, if the Philippines must be seen as globally competitive compared to his neighboring Asian countries then, UP or, other such competitive academes, must be at the forefront in the country's struggle for a place in the globe. Because the quality of education we give to our people is the last thing that a country hangs on to if all else fail.
But then again, it's ironic how most of us swagger around for being UP-bred or somewheres, when our country on the whole has been poorly earmarked as belonging to the homogenous group of Section D, Row 4, Malapit sa Basurahan.
It's about time The Oblation needs an eyewear to clearly see his focus.

FYI, UP knows about this and does not need an eyeglass to see the real scenario clearly. However, there is only so much that UP can do considering that the government has been continuously reducing the budget for education, specially UP!!! Thank Sen. Osmena for that!
How would you expect UP to provide quality of education on the same level as those in our neighboring countries such as Singapore, Korea and Japan, among others, with its faculty members' dismal salaries, low-budget laboratories, and lack of classrooms!??! If UP increases tuition, the students will rally against it and yet these same students are the ones suffering for those mentioned above.
Oh well -- should the government give priority to education and increase UP's annual budget, at least twice what UP is asking for, then I do believe that somehow, somewhere it will trickle down to the students and hopefully, these students will graduate and make the country better.

Hohum.
Why do we always have to, for crying out loud, associate Quality with Money?
Financial back-up is no guarantee for quality education.
As in.

...guiding philosophy.
Bossing Mac,
Maybe you can adopt my philosophy for your org. I think it fits in well:
The philosophy of THAT
Metaphysics - the individual and anything he can or cannot point his finger at
Morals and ethics - self interest and confounding others
Epistemology - un-reason
Politics - getting one over the other guy.
What do you think?

It is NOT a direct correlation. You have to see it in the context of CAPITAL OUTLAY and SALARIES to enable the university to provide the best equipment and hire the best faculties. UP is suffering from an exodus of faculty members to private institutions that pay from 5 to 10 times MORE than what UP pays them... some are leaving the country because of this as well.
And oh - I also agree with you that is no GUARANTEE (one IT university is but a good example!) but it will surely help in allowing the university concentrate more on quality rather than on financials!
