View Full Version : What's the overall best anime series/OAV/movie and who's the best anime character?
Jacob

Lucky are those who have Home Cable.
AXN channel is holding an anime festival this August and it includes such titles as Akira, Ghost In The Shell and Fatal Fury.
Sayang, hindi kasama ang Ninja Scroll, my all-time favorite.
I have watched a fair share of anime pero I still don't understand why people are raving about Ghost In The Shell. It's OK pero medyo boring and the reviews don't exactly reflect the whole film. Parang overrated. Same goes for Akira. I admit, I was blown away when I first saw it pero ng panoorin ko ulit (esp. after watching Ninja Scroll), inaantok na ako sa pacing.
Did you guys watched the Samurai X (aka Ruroukin Kenshin) movie last August 5 on HBO? Whaddayathink?
Do you guys know which video shops have great anime collections?
Hiya Jacob!
I've also heard that Ghost in the Shell is good (I haven't seen it yet), although an officemate of mine, who saw it after I prodded him to do so, didn't quite like it. He said it was "bitin" and couldn't understand just what the story was all about.
Ninja Scroll is REALLY cool! It was actually the first OAV which I appreciated. I also liked Fist of the North Star eventhough it was violent and gory. My brother loves Ah! My Goddess for the great detail given to the drawings.
Have you seen "Vision of Escaflowne"?
I think Cats is one of the more popular anime stores, although they have exorbitant prices.

Yeah! I saw Samuri X on HBO , it was a realy god anime , it had a story and all , and I heard of ghost in the shell , the ghost in the shel I know was a game , does that mean , this ghost in the shell was based on the Game?
Jacob

Ghost In The Shell was based on a comic book.
Ada, I haven't seen those titles YET.
Probably the reason why I didn't like Ghost In The Shell is because I'm a samurai/ninja fan rather than a big robot one.

i must admit. i'm not exactly an anime conoisseur but i do appreciate some of the films i've seen.
to jacob: i love ninja scroll as well, probably my all time fave too.
with regards to akira, it was regardded in such a way because it was *way* ahead of its time. parang blade runner. so, comparing it to newer and more sophisticated animes just doesn't do the film justice.
in my opinion, akira the second time around is even better :)
btw, there's an anime rental place somewhere in BF (near the alabang area)... pretty good collection. they even used to have chasing amy, clerks and the likes...

I hope you all know where I got my name, I am not like Eric Harris or Dylan Klebold, the Colorado shooters, I swear.
Ninja Scroll was kick ***, some of the best sword-fighting I've ever seen. Rurouni Kenshin has some of the best character backgrounds, and is thick with story. The movie was more cinematographic and had more story than fighting, but what it lacked for in content, it made up for in quality. (Hint: Shigure uses Musashi Miyamoto's stance Juji dome in his fight with Kenshin. Watch where he croses his swords in front of him). And I'm already done with the Shishio series, hehehe.
Recomendations: Rurouni Kenshin, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Martian Successor Nadesico (REALLY REAlLY GOOD), Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 (the 90's version), Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (the sequel to he tv show) (I like mecha)
Do not get: Night Warriors: Darkstalker's Revenge( Slow fights)

Well, I'd have to say Ranma for the series, with second place going to Macross.
I really haven't decided the best OAV yet, but I have two winners for the movies:
Ghost in Shell and Akira.
What're your picks?

Sep 5, 1999, 07:40 PM
akira din, pero try mo rin yung ninja scrolls, malalim masyado yung ghost in a shell...sa tv series, dragon ball siyempre
second is samurai x....
For the TV series, I'd have to go for Ranma for its humor. For the OAV, I'd say Ninja Scroll, hands down. None of the other OAVs I've seen can compare.
Samurai X is okay animation-wise, but I'm bothered that the lead character, err, Bathusai (sp?) sounds so condescending. I guess that's what you get when you translate anime to english. You rob the character of uh, character.

Yeah, Rumiko Takahashi hit a gold mine with Ranma 1/2. Did you know that it has shown for nine years in Japan? It's really one of the most popular anime series of all time. I've even read about it breathing life back into anime in the states.
But you also gotta recognize Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT. The drawings are unique and the animation's fast.
But who can forget THE milestone of Japanese Animation...none other than Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira. It's story, art, music and style set a new standard for the genre. Another movie worth mentioning is Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononke. Bold and beautiful, yet something the whole family can watch.

Pokemon's really cool. It's kind of new, but already it has an intense following in the states. Do you remember the news about the anime in Japan whose frame rate flickers so fast that it caused some kids to be sick? That's Pokemon. :)

Dragon Ball's better because it came out after Macross, but have you seen Macross Plus? Moy Fantasitico! You should try it out... :)

Mononoke is great!

from Samurai X a far second.
Hey, Neon Genesis Evangelion is on Channel 2! With Tagalog voices nga lang.

We have a tape of Akira, and my brothers love it. Way too violent for my tastes, though.
I love Akazukin Cha Cha, as a whole. It's so silly and funny and weird, and even at 22 I enjoy the little jokes and the quirks of the characters! :D

wolverine: Did you know there's a Jubei character in Samurai Showdown? Coincidence or crossover? According to internet sources, mas malapit sa Jubei ng Ninja Resurrection (wc. incidentally, is NOT Ninja Scroll 2) than the Ninja Scroll Jubei.
Master Yoda: anime talaga ang Crying Freeman. The live action one is almost faithful to the animated original, even some shots are framed like the anime.
jepoy: Nothing against Ghost In The Shell, pero after viewing Ninja Scroll, it kinda drags. Pero ang galing ng animation.

NINJA SCROLL RULESSSSSSS!!! (although no matter how many times i watch it, i still cant find one mention of the words "ninja scroll"! there is no scroll!)
i also like AKIRA and Ghost in the Shell. I like Ghost in the Shell especially because it pre-dates "The Matrix" and yet it pretty much tackles similar tech issues. hell, in terms of hardcore cyberpunk stuff, Ghost is far better than the Matrix (an Agent should've thought of grabbing the phone from one of the good guys and escaping from the Matrix into the body of the good guy)
my fave character? hmmmmmm, thats a tough one... i used to like Son Goku because he kicked ***, pero after a while DBZ became somewhat predictable... then came Eugene (or Yusuke)... the character development in Ghostfighter (Yu Yu Hakusho) is waaay much better than in DBZ! now there's Recca, but alas, he's just a Eugene wannabe... so i guess my fave character is Eugene.... uh, no wait, may Samurai X pa pala... its pretty much a toss-up between Eugene and Kenshin for me...
^_^
peps: i like Cedie better =P

master_yoda, like pinhead said, everything about "Ninja Scroll" is good. Opening scene pa lang blown away ka na. The story is very engaging since the lead dude, Kibagami Jubei, is a masterless ninja, ronin kung baga. It's set in feudal Japan, which is always a favorite due to the abundance of ninjas, samurai, swordplay, and magic. The female lead isn't just there for display (although she does it very well), Kagero is also a ninja with some er... interesting abilities. They go through a bunch of bad guys so this is the anime that "Samurai Showdown" should have been. Plus, if you like ninjas that move fast, slice and dice, and come in droves, you'll love it.

Ninja Scroll ze best! Master_yoda, why is it great? Lemme put it this way. Before Ninja Scroll came along, I snubbed all OAVs my brothers watched. I happened to take a peek when they were watching NS, and what can I say? I was glued to the TV until it finished. It's that good. Great animation, great story. It'll blow you away.
Other interesting OAVs I've seen: Fist of the North Star (very violent though), Macross Plus, Vision of Escaflowne, Bubblegum Crisis, Ah! My Godess, and of course, Ranma.

Personally, I didn't like Ninja Scroll. I don't want to go down to technicalities but it just irked me. What's with all the sex and profanity? The way they showed the women there was...never mind.
Favorite anime character? Hmm. That's a hard to answer question. In YuYu, my favorite is Hiei. He may be short, but he's so funny when he goes SD-form everytime Kurama teases him about Yukina! :) In Rurouni Kenshin, its gotta be Aoshi Shinomori! I love his fighting style and his clothes are nice too. Next in RK: Soujirou and Kamiya Kaoru. Kaoru is one cool girl: she can fight and she's one of the few anime women whose cleavage and legs isn't the focus.
EVA: Rei sana, but then again, they tend to show too much of her body more than what is necessary. The verdict? Kaworu! hehehe.
Flame of Recca: Tokiya Miyagami! Si Fuuko sana but I don't like her attitude, and the way she is portrayed? Duh.
And lastly, Gundam Wing is my favorite anime of all time. I love the movie Endless Waltz (Gundam Heavyarms was indescribable). My favorite character is Quatre Winner, and next would be Lucrezia Noin.
That's all. =)

Crying Freeman the OAV is still the best for me, even though it doesn't really count as a movie. The Gundam Wing Endless Waltz is also cool and the soundtrack and direction of the movie is very good. I'm more of a fan of OAVs so I hope you don't mind if I mention some of my fave OAVs too. My fave OAV is the 2 VCD version of the Reminiscence Chapter of Rurouni Kenshin. Great art, amazing soundtrack and a really tearjerking storyline.
I'm not much of a fan of Ninja Scroll, not because I'm a girl, but because I'm not a fan of sex-themed anime (to those who've watched it already, NO OFFENSE, ok?).
The Rock: I loved Princess Mononoke!! I wonder when they'll release it here??

Para sa Sci-Fi with matching ROBOTS, Gundam Wing. Sayang nga nag-iba ang kuwento ng di-nubbed sa tagalog. <;Favorite Gundam: Deathscythe>;
Para sa Romantic Comedy, Oh My Goddess (or is it Ah My Goddess?). Ang ganda ng Kuwento. Para sa 'kin, si Belldandy and pinakamagandang Anime character. Na-in-love talaga ako sa kanya.

MABUHAY ANG RUROUNI KENSHIN 4 EVER!!!
IceAngel: yup... COOL ARTWORK AND STORYLINE!!! the OAV's called "A Meiji Story" in japan. the best thing i love about kenshin is that it's a great piece of fiction based on historical events (the ishin war which led to the meiji restoration... i teach asian history :oP)
astrogirl: "Flying high in the sky... (taran-tara-ra-ra-ra-ra-ran)... Astroboy, Astroboy...." I used to watch that series every sunday when i was a kid on channel 9!!!
YEAH... FUUSHIGI YUUGI!!! then it is true!!!
me? for me, miaka rocks BIG TIME!!! she's cute... and the way she matures over the course of all her adventures really got to me.
something to ponder about...
have you guys noticed that most anime series involve teenagers as the main characters?
i was able to watch one cool series in AXN (cool anime... from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.) called CYBER TEAM IN AKIHABARA and it featured overly "developed" thirteen yr old girls!!!
for the most part... it's a culture thing in my opinion.

Mar 17, 2000, 07:56 AM
Goonie: I LOVED the OAV!! Its so romantic yet its also really historical. Yup, that's one of the reasons why I favor Rurouni Kenshin over Neon Genesis Evangelion, it has this "real" feeling in it.
E-man: I love the action scenes in Rurouni Kenshin, its so well-choreographed and the animation is just perfect. What's your favorite fight ever? Me, it has gotta be Saitou and Kenshin's memorable fight at the Kamiya Dojo. As for favorite fighting techniques, its gotta be Kodachi Nitoryou of Aoshi. Dang, there's something about that hunk fighting with two kodachis that really make me drool.... :)
Flyderman: Suggestions? Check out Rurouni Kenshin. You seem to be the type who likes action-comedies. How about Flame of Recca? That one's pretty cool too.
dreampsyche: Its still Hotohori for me!! ;)
I think the reason why there are a lot of teens in anime is because its usual target audience are teens and above...if the anime is kodomo anime (for kids) then its likely the protagonist would be a little kid too (like in Pokemon). But yeah, its very noticeable that its usually the young people who are the characters in anime. Take Gundam Wing, I mean, 15 year old boys piloting such machinery like Gundams is kinda absurd! Not to mention that they're kinda pushing it with the ages. I mean, Treize is the leader of Oz, yet he's only 24? Geez.

FUSHIGI YUUGI ON FRI? COOOOL!!!
iceangel: for me, i don't really have a fave move. I LIKE 'EM ALL!!! especially when hiko and kenshin faced off for training for the kuzu ryu sen and the ama kakeru ryu no hirameki... that was a blast!!! the final fight of shishio and kenshin was really cool too...
flyderman: do u have cable tv at home? if u do, try turning on to AXN (if ur cable operator has it...). they have cool comedy action anime series there from 5:30 to 7:00... including rorouni kenshin.
flame of recca was pretty cool... PERO SOBRA SYANG BITIN!!! there were a lot of things that didn't happen in the the series.
for example, the old guy (who's supposed to be one of the 8 dragons) told koganei, the kid with one of the psychic devices, that his weapon had a sixth configuration. THE SHOW DIDN'T EVEN LAST LONG ENOUGH TO SHOW THAT!!! GOSH!!!
another example, there were some fights that didn't happen. one fight which didn't push through was one between fuuko and one of kurei's flunkies (on that episode when fuuko and domon were temporarily detained in a trap... i'm talking about the guy who released them from the trap). that flunkie mentioned that there will come a time when their psychic devices should clash. then... in some part of the series, THAT FLUNKIE JUST FORFEITED HIS MATCH!!! DUUUUUUHHHH!!!!

Pinakagusto ko yung Fushigi Yuugi, Marmalade Boy, Yu Yu Hakusho, Ah/Oh My Goddess, Knight Hunters (super cute ni Aya!) at Utena.
Goonie, were you able to complete the whole series of Utena? I was only able to watch half of the whole series. If yes, where did you get the copy of the complete series?

chrissycares: I love Weiss Kruez (Knight Hunters) too! I still can't decide which one is cooler looking, Aya or Yoji. I kinda like Aya since he's mix of Aoshi (from RK), Kurama (his red hair) and Hiei! (his attitude and his Filipino seiyuu). Ah, but I like Yoji too! :)
I like Nuriko too, but I love Hotohori more! Aw man, I sound like a crazed bishounen addict here...
Yoshi: It depends on what type of anime do you go for. I think the anime they show on GMA is acceptable, I mean, the Filipino seiyuus are well picked and they can really act (voice-wise). But some of the anime are more of for a wide audience. Like YuYu, Flame of Recca, the like. Like I said, it still depends on your taste.
Hey, I just found out something cool (or weird). Yuusuke's (Eugene from YYH) Filipino seiyuu is the same as Michael Joe from Maskman! *ducks as people starts throwing katanas and the like at her* Ok, I'll shut up now...

another thing... what's MONSTER RANCHER about? is it anything like Pokemon?
sampaguita: YEAH!!! SAILORMOON rocks BIG TIME!!! have u watched the sailormoon stars series? super cool!!!

LOL goonie, baka di ka lang nasanay. I kinda liked Akane's voice, she has a better seiyuu than Ranma (the girl version). Isn't the guinea pig version of Ryouga cute!!
Did you see the ending of Macross on AXN? I didn't get to watch it since I don't have AXN *sigh* Kainis, Macross is still one of my favorites, though.
I think I already announced that Escaflowne would be shown in GMA...I know, its so cool! I was only able to rent the first three tapes of Escaflowne and I really wanna know what's going to happen with that Alec guy. I wish GMA would hurry it up with the plugging of that anime!

Flyderman: Cards and Friends at UM basically has everything, but Mimay's Hobbies Shop at the 3rd floor has more RK stuff. They have the English subtitled version of the Ishin-Shishi movie (the one shown in HBO) there too. In Greenhills, there's this shop at 3rd floor Sampaguita Lane called "Comic Sale" and has really affordable VHS tapes of RK. It has all the episodes (about 4 episodes per tape, I think) which is quite a bargain for most VCDs only have two episodes each and cost 400 pesos, while in Comic Sale each VHS costs 250 pesos only. There's also this store at the 2nd floor called Comic Express, you might want to check that out.
Yoshi: Kainis nga yung premiere eh, but I love the voice actors. I just didn't like the way they gave the voice actress of Jenny (YuYu Hakusho) to Miaka, I mean, she could so much better! But I have to say the voice actor of Tamahome sounds so dreamy...and ditto to Yui's voice actress! :)

For me, I still love Macross (Or retitled as Robotech) Do you know that it is now in Robotech 8? as in the Mechs are now different and the pilots are.. get this.. Musicians!!!!! yeah..... they pilot the mechs by playing instruments inside them.. in a way cool.. but in a way lame..
Although I do have to say that the music from the series really rocks.. I have a Cd at home and I really love it...
Actually, I love the Original one better though.. you know.. the one with Rick hunter and minmay... :)
What I also like about anime is the music accompaniments.. I tihnk I have a whole stack of Music CDs at home all devoted to Anime.. I have Macross(a few), Gundam (tons), Ranma (some), Ghostfighter (a lot) and others.. the only anime music I cant find is from Recca no honou.. or in english, Flame of Recca... as in it is so hard to find..
If you ppl really love anime, you should check out the anime movies then.. They really rock.. Like "Kaze no tani no Nausicaa (Nausicaa of the valley of the winds)", "Mononokehime (Princess mononoke)" and others.. the best are from Studio Ghibli..

Ninja Scroll? Yup, I watched it with my bros, and no offense or anything, I didn't like it that much. Maybe its because of all those naked girls...^_^ But I have to say the artwork is very good, and Jubei's swordfighting skills is better than Kenshin's! My opinion only, of course. :)
Assassin_Mage: I absolutely LOVE theme songs and music from anime! My most prized possession would be that RK Theme songs CD I bought out of my own money (it cost a friggin' 500 bucks!!) and I really haven't stopped listening to it ever since. FLYDER MAN: Ninja Scroll's one of the best feature-length anime's i've seen. although, you have to have a background of japanese history to appreciate it fully beyond the animation and special effects. here's a clue... read about the edo period/tokugawa period and the meiji restoration. it'd be useful if you also read about japanese mythology. (medyo overboard noh... just to watch one movie...mwe-he-he-he!!! teacher nga naman oh...)
ASSASIN MAGE: why don't you try downloading mp3's ... that is if you have u have access at home. suhestyon lamang po... anime CD's are hard to find, and, if ever u find any, they're as expensive as *$## !!!
SILENCE: yes my fellow kenshin fan... i do wish people knew about the essence of the story of kenshin. i've been using rurouni kenshin as a springboard for my lessons in japanese history and culture for some time.
TO EBRIWAN...
ANIME SONGS ARE THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE WHOLE THANG!!! the songs set this kind of animation apart from others in the way that it evokes emotions through sight and sound. i personally love the themes of escaflowne (yakosoku wa iranai), utena (revolution), fushigi yuugi (itooshi hito no tameni), sailormoon stars, and the ending themes of rekka (zutto kimi no soba de) and kenshin (1/3 no junjou no kanjou)... BASTA ANG DAMI!!!

Goonie: I'm not much of a Ranma fan, but a lot of my friends were complaining too because they didn't show the first episode, which makes me want to ask, WHY didn't they show it anyway???
Actually, watching Kenshin gave me the pull to research on Japanese history, so I was really prepared when I finally got to watch the OAVs. A bunch of my classmates borrowed my tape of the OAV and they were quite mystified since they couldn't understand the relevance of the Bakufu and etc. to Kenshin. hay naku, so few RK fans are actually even aware of the essence of kenshin and the relevance of his past to his current philosophy in the series. Actually, I felt like a real expert in Japanese culture and everything since I was the one clearing things up. Tee hee. :D
I know, the music is really great! I especially love the instrumental themes...like the ones playing during the end of RK OAV 4, and the violin theme of Gundam Wing Endless Waltz...the battle theme of Macross...etc etc...ang dami! Makes me wanna grab them all...oh yeah, not to mention that instrumental theme of Shinji everytime he has an action scene...grabe! I really love it!

'bout why they didn't show the first episode... i have an idea. maybe it's because of the breast exposure thing when ranma first transformed into a girl. but gma could've easily edited it out... parang yung nangyari dun sa recca (when kurei called on his flame, kurenai --- who had the least offensive breasts i've seen!!! ewan ko nga ba kung bakit pa inedit!!!). idea lang naman.

SOK: i hope you won't mind my ignorance... but what does " *pttt " mean?
to everyone:
i just visited the "WeAreAnime.com" site. pretty cool presentation; i even signed up for their promo thingie!!! i liked that feature where you could choose the background songs!!!
you could even download the opening sequences of their feature series... i LOOOOOVE the opening sequence of escaflowne!!! it's just sooooo cool, with the great song and all!!!
i question for everyone... what are your fave anime opening sequences? kahit na nga hindi anime... basta fave opening sequence nyo for any cartoon (pero anime sana... :D)
another thing... there a fellow PExer who set-up an anime mail group in egroups. sumali na ako... sana sali na rin kayo para mas madalas yung usapan natin. baka makaligoy rin tayo mula sa usaping anime, para maging friends tayong lahat. hope to see you guys there!!!

I heard from people on the net that Flame of Recca wasn't finished, so I don't watch it that much. I still prefer Weiss Kruez over Flame of Recca, even though the art of Weiss sometimes sucks.
My favorite theme music...hmm, that made me think. I never really listened much to the theme sounds, but I have to say its still that instrumental theme in Gundam Wing...the one in where there's always a fight scene...dang, basta, in the last episode, it was the one playing when Heero and Zechs were battling it out in their mechs, Heero in Gundam Zero and Zechs in the Gundam Epyon, and they were fighting really intensely in the dilapidated Libra heading for Earth....love that scene!
I already saw weareanime.com and I liked it too, but I just felt bad when they didn't even have any info on Weiss Kruez other than a few cheap pictures. Grr. BTW, I have a mailing list of my own, kaya lang, we're all girls, but its an anime mailing list. If you want to try it, go to the mailing list link through my gundam wing site, http://www.crosswinds.net/~gwinghq

Nope Goonie, he doesn't have a voice there. Medyo nagkamali ako, I meant the original Fushigi Yuigi voices. Heero and Tamahome has the same seiyuu. LOL, natatawa nga ako sa Ranma e, Ranma has Heero's Tagalog seiyuu while Ayane has Relena's Tagalog Seiyuu! Hahaha!
I liked the jobs being taken by the one who did Hiei of YYH's voice...he's the one who did Aya's voice in Weiss Kruez (man, for a Tagalog seiyuu, that guy's voice is SOO sexy) and he's currently doing the voice of Mosquiton.
Goonie, did you join the mailing list yet? We used to have a discussion about manga shops here in the philippines and one of the girls pointed out this huge manga library in Makati. Apr 19, 2000, 06:49 PM
hmmm... where do I begin? <;...there's so much for me to say...>;
First off, I'll answer the main question in this post; what is my fave anime?
Nobuhiro Watsuki's RUROUNI KENSHIN!
(literally translated as "Kenshin in wandering" ---up to you creative dudes to revise it to make it sound cool in English)
I noticed that mot of you guys were almost drooling at the fluidity and intricacy of the fight scenes in Rurouken, but it is with the sad truth that I should say that the fighting styles used are impossible (duh!). What is even more surprising, is that most of the techniques were not based on real fighting styles in kendo. Saitou Hajime's Gatotsu however is based on the left handed thrust move used by the Shinsengumi when fighting in numbers. The names of the techniques however, have meanings!
Hi- soaring, flying
Ten- sky, heavens
Mitsurugi- Honorific name for sword
Ryuu- style, school of
Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu - School of the Flying Sword of the heavens
The translation is a bit rough, but it more or less gets the meaning across. If you guys are interested in knowing the meaning of your fave moves in Rurouken, you can email me at Hitokiri_DarkScythe@yahoo.com and I might be able to find what you're looking for (might).
Also, the backdrop of Rurouken, (post bakumatsu Edo, 1860+) was based loosely on the events after the Battle of Toba and Fushimi (for you RK afficiandos out there, take note! the Boshin War began with the last battle of the Chousu Inshinshinshi and Shinsengumi, which is, the battle of Toba!)
References to the Bakufu, the Meiji Gov't and others were in a way, near-accurate.
While I also enjoy AXN's appended (read here-post-makoto shishio) RK series, I don't really like it since it wasn't Watsuki-sensei who wrote it. I still prefer the REAL story found Chapter 152-200+ of the RK manga. There, you will see the actual events in the OAV and how it all concluded with Enishi's return from china after Shishio's death. (here, you will see the legendary Watoujitsuu Zougeki Tousei which kicked the Amakakeru Ryuu no Hirameki in the @$$, the tag team of Saitou and Aoshi, and a few other surprises that will, ...er, "shock" you. The character you would least expect to die, ...dies... guess who?)
Enough about that...
Please don't call Filipino Dubbers as Seiyuu. Its an insult to Megumi Hayashibara and all her fellow colleuges in the Seiyuu bussiness. It takes more than dubbing to be a seiyuu, there is a certain amount of dignity and honor given to Japanese Seiyuu.
Hmmm... I find it strange that while most of you seem to have been oriented to the actual Japanese titles of several anime being shown here locally, I find it surprising that none of you mentioned the real title of the so-called Knight Hunters (or did I just miss the post of whoever may have mentioned it?), the real title is White Cross, but its written in another language (German I think)so its pronouced as Weiss Kriuz, or something.
What's all the fuss about watching Sailor Moon?! I'm a straight, male, homophobic, 18 year old college sophomore, who has (proudly) watched at least 95% of all the Sailor Moon episodes (IceAngel: I can't give you a number but it was the Sailor Stars series that concluded the entire story, long live crystal tokyo. Ai****eru Minako-dono!).
Goon: there's a store called Feata on the top floor of Makati Cinema Square that is owned by a Fil-Jap couple (the fil wife is here and the Jap husband is in Japan) the sell original Manga, Soundtracks, posters and all other stuff at very (extremly) low prices (P300 for a manga volume, it's in Jap so it's very cheap!) Also they consider requests, like getting titles they don't have yet, just give them your contact # and they will tell when the stuff you ordered has arrived. -yup, AXN doesn't have much franchising capabilities do they?
trivia: I'm sure there's at least one of you guy's who have seen Bioman, Mask Rider Black, Ultraman and Godzilla. The live action five-people groups are called Sentai, each year a new sentai series arrives and the last one ends (kaya maraming pinapalabas ang Saban na version ng power rangers ay dahil nang-ri-rip-off sila sa japan). Mask Rider (Kamen Rider) and Ultraman (along with Jiban, Shaider and the others) are called Tokusatsu. Godzilla, along with Gamera, Mothra and all the other Japanese giant monsters are called Kaiju.
Neon Genesis Evangelion rules! I love Rei Ayanami!
Assasin Mage: the Macross you are talking about is Macross 7, the one with Basara and Mylene. Yeah, kinda weird that you could pilot a Variable Fighter using a guitar, or drums, or whatever. Princess Mononuke Rules! Also check out Musamune Shiro's Ghost in a Shell, I highly recommend it. Also Perfect Blue for those who also enjoy music and pop culture, you'll enjoy the story (slight nudity though). For those who go for the fight scenes, then Ninja Scroll is for you (flydermann: reaction? I assume that you viewed it right?)(some sex scenes though). Oh, one final warning, some titles I mentioned were released around 1995, so expect a slightly old style art.
I don't know about most of you guys, but I hate it whenever channel 7, 2 and whatever other local channel is showing Anime. Why? First, because I hate it whne they dub, cut and bastardize and anime. Second, ever since ch 7 franchised anime, the prices of anime goods have sky rocketed. Gundam Wing Endless Waltz 1/144 model kits were once selling for P350 at Alternate Dimension. Now it's P1,000+. Kinda greedy reason, but for a purist anime otaku-to-be (don't anyone of you dare call yourselves as real otaku, you haven't seen how extremely cult fanatical the real Otaku's are -go to Japan and you'll see what I mean) being able to collect every single Tokimeki Memorial, Akira, Gundam 0800, and all other anime vhs, betamax, manga, LD's, VCD's, DVD's, cassetes, posters, model kits, figurines, action figures, fanzines, accessories and all other related stuff is a must!
Everybody: hope I didn't bore you people with that long tirade, anyway, if any of you ppl are interested to learn more about Anime or related Japanese culture, feel free to Email me at the address I placed somewhere in the beggining of this post. Also, I just finished two baby thesis defending that anime is a genre on it's own and anime is not a cartoon. For that, I flunked a couple of other subjects. Ja mata.

kaede: thanks for the nice info!!! you can bet that i'm passing by that shop anytime after the holy week.
btw, i'm a teacher of asian history in high school, and i used kenshin as a springboard for my discussions in the transition towards modern japan, esp in d meiji restoration. i love it when my students are able to relate to the discussion...since a lot of them, including the girls, watch the series. they were surprised to see that the story was based on real events in japanese history.
i heard somewhere that kenshin was based on a real persona...a real "hitokiri". is that true?
btw... yes, i have resigned my thoughts to the seeming physical impossibility of some of his moves. maybe there was some exaggeration done, considering it is part fiction. i don't know... the term "god-like"/"battou" (tama ba?) speed is pretty relative anyway.
about ch 2 and 7, well... yeah, they do a lousy job of translating the series. they don't give ample respect to the original spirit of the themes of the series. heck, they should all burn in damn anime h@%%!!! but i have to commend them for having brought this artform to the eyes of the filipino masses. to echo one of the posters of this thread, they tried to make the series "maka-masa". the fans don't really care about what the original spirit of the series is (but we do... :p OTAKUS RULE!!!). but beyond that, it is good that they can learn to appreciate such an intricate aspect of japanese culture.
thanks a lot kaede... and no... you did not bore me a single bit :D :D :D :D :D

You can call yourself an otaku. One does not have to buy all those items to be an otaku. If one has your dedication to the art, you can call yourself an accomplished otaku.
Yes, Macross 7 was a bit weird, but it does have one great musical accompanimant.. especially the firebomber series of songs. really rocks.
some of the anime which were not mentioned before in any of these posts are
Legend of Basara
Tokimeki Memorial
Lodoss Wars (a great Classic)
and a lot of others.

Actually, Kaede, I'm quite aware myself on the real name of Knight Hunters. But I kinda prefer calling it Weiss Kruez, it sounds better that way. Gaack, I have NO idea where GMA got that idea of calling it Knight Hunters...but I have to admit, the Tagalog voice actor of Aya really sounds so sexy when he says "Ako ay isang (insert strategic stage pause here) KNIGHT HUNTER." :D :D
I just want to clear up that voice seiyuu thing. I am not really aware that it is an insult to use seiyuu to refer to a Tagalog voice actor, for I know that "seiyuu" simply means voice actor. I didn't know that it had some cultural rings or whatever into it. My apologies if I offend the real otakus.
LOL, Kaede, right on, its quite obvious anyway that those fighting techniques are impossible in real life! :D But I guess that's the reason why we drool over them, because we can only see them in anime! Anyway, I get all my info on RK on my bro, who is gaga over the series and researches for info on it as much as he can. Its a good thing I knew all about it or else I would be really confused when I watch the OAVs.
Oh yeah, Kaede, Weiss Kruez, is indeed German. :D
Hey, don't leave me out, I watch Bioman, Mask rider Black, Maskman, etc. Actually, I remember when I was a kid I would argue with my sister since we both fantasized being "Pink 5" in Bioman. :D BTW, Kaede, I huge percentage of my research papers, essays and speeches for English class were anime-related and is an attempt to clear things up about anime. Yes! May kapareho na rin ako!
Assassin_Mage: I saw a bunch of Recca no honou OSTs in a shop at Greenhills...
Goonie: I know that Saitou is based on the real Saitou Hajime, and so is Okita, and Aoshi is based on some devil guy (dang, let me check my notes again), but Kenshin, a real hitokiri? I doubt it. From what I've heard, he's the one who isn't real.
Seishirou
Apr 20, 2000, 07:52 PM
It's nice to see that they're some other RK fans out there. Actually, I was under the impression that some of the maneuvers that they do is quite possible, although improbable. While some are really tricky to pull off(Kenshin's Kuzuryusen), some are not that inconceivable to pull off in real life. The Ryuitsuisen, for example, is a simple downward finishing blow from above, hardly impossible for an adept kenkaku. Enishi's Watoujitsu also contains mechanics that are attributable to real kenjutsu. I guess the person who even wants to attempt such difficult maneuvers would have to be physically gifted in order to pull it off, like excellent leg strength to attain Gatotsu's thrust or Shukuchi's speed. I guess the only real impossible thing that happen in that series is Kenshin's extraordinary regenerative healing factor. I mean, this guy get's impaled by Saitou on a ceiling, sliced in the back by Sou-chan, burned, exploded, and then gutted by Shishio, but manages to fight without any noticeable hindrance whatsoever. Really ridiculous, if you ask me.

I'm with you on this one, Kaede-kun. Although they were generally not that bad, the Rurouni Kenshin TV fillers were not that thrilling to begin with. The Shura, Amakusa Shougo, and Kenshingumi filler episodes were the only good ones, IMHO. Frankly, I'm salivating at the rumors that Sony is going to be animating the Jinchuu Hen very soon, 'cause it's my most favorite RK chapter ever. The action, the drama, the plot,... hell, it even has the REAL ending, for crying out loud. The fight between Enishi and Kenshin, both at the dojo and at the beach of his fortress, has got to be one of the best fights ever. The only one that could possibly be better than that(in the RK universe, at least) is the classic duel in the Kamiya dojo between Saitou Hajime and the Hitokiri Battousai.
Ne, Kaede-kun, I believe Enishi calls it the Watoujitsu Zetsugi Kofoku Tousei, the ougi(sucession technique) of Watoujitsu. It was able to defeat Kenshin's ougi for the first time, but it failed the second time because of Enishi's emotional collapse. Try going Serazawa's translations of the Jinchuu Hen past chapter 200 because the story goes on for quite awhile more after that, and gets even more intense with all the recent action and plot twists.

bostsip: From what I know, I don't think that a Valentine's OAV of YYH really does exist, although they're unconfirmed reports about it. There is, however, 2 OAVs of YYH that I know of that have the cast and seiyuus doing crazy stuff all over the place, but it's such a rare item that I think nobody can ever get their hands on it.
As for Weiss Kreuz, if you're a little bit dissapointed by the ending, then the 2 OAVs will certainly make you feel a little better.
The quality of the animation is finally done with justice, the story and plot twists are amazing, and we get to see *SPOILER ALERT!!!!* the Weiss boys literally try to kill each other!!! Definitely a must see.

Anybody here seen "Perfect Blue"? It's not your typical anime with giant mechs, sorecry, or swords. In fact, it's very realistic. Psychological thriller!!! :D The Rock says that this has become an instant favorite. http://www.pinoyexchange.com/evilgrin.gif

I ordered Perfect Blue on DVD but I'm still waiting for it in the mail. I heard it's really good.
By the way, do any of you order from CDNow? They don't normally ship videos & DVDs outside the US, however I found a glitch in their system, which only works for anime DVDs & VHS tapes. There's an error that lets anime titles ship internationally, at a low price of $6 for Fedex Priority (1 week). Try it and you'll see what I mean.

My picks would be:
Series:
1. Dragonball Z
- best action-oriented anime out there
2. Rurouni Kenshin
- great characters and animation
3. Gundam Wing/Evangelion
- great storyline/captivating, although depressing, atmosphere
4. Fushigi Yuugi/Yu Yu Hakusho
- best shougo anime/DBZ's younger sibling
5. DUAL Parallel Trouble Adventure/Weiss Kreuz
- funny atmosphere/unmatched soundtrack courtesy of Weiss
Movies:
1. Ninja Scroll
- the king of gore in anime
2. Gundam Wing Endless Waltz: The Special Edition
- much better than the OAVs, and with new scenes, as well
3. DBZ movie 8
- Brolly simply kicks ***
4. Rurouni Kenshin: Requiem for an Ishinshishi
- great movie for a great series
5. X: The Movie
- awesome animation
OAV:
1. Rurouni Kenshin: The Reminiscence Edition
- it doesn't get any better than this
2. Weiss Kreuz: Crime and Punishment
- Weiss vs. Weiss. 'Nuff said.
3. DBZ: The Trunks Story
- touching tale on Trunks' origin
4. Yu Yu Hakusho OAV
- not the Valentine's special, but the one where the characeters and seiyuu's are fooling around and acting really silly. it's quite a hoot to watch.
5. Crying Freeman
- captivating storyline and characters
-

I'd go for Dual for the series, Samurai X for the OAVs and Yuyu for the movie

The Rock
Jun 6, 2000, 01:01 AM
The Rock's favorite anime are these little snippets:
1. Ninja Scroll - 'nuff said!
2. Perfect Blue - psychological thriller, who would have thought that a "cartoon" could get this genre in this manner?
3. The Princess Mononoke - it is epic fimmaking done with animation. :D
4. Neon Genesis Evangelion - the EVAs, the story, the EVA pilots http://www.pinoyexchange.com/yummy.gif, the best anime series of the 90s.
5. Voltes V - The Rock was introduce to anime through this little toon from the 70s, life has never been the same since.

I would have to say that I still love the Macross (Robotech) Series. Also one to be mentioned is GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka). But as said, for a funny show, check out Ranma :D
For movies, It has got to be Mononokehime and Kaze no tani no Nausicaa.

Ako naman:
OAVs
Ninja Scroll - aba syempre po!
Rurouni Kenshin (4 volumes)
Ranma 1/2
Series
Rurouni Kenshin
Ranma 1/2 (english translation)
Flame of Recca
Dragonball Z
For the TV series, the wonderfully funny Ranma 1/2 and Rurouni Kenshin would be my picks (for Ranma, not the translated version in GMA 7...that sucks).
For the OAVs or movies (aren't they one and the same? OAV = Original Animated Video, sometimes OVA = Original Video Animation), I have a hard time comparing across genres, so I'll break it down:
Action/fighting: Ninja Scroll and Rurouni Kenshin. Ninja Scroll boasts of excellent animation AND dubbing. RK has magnificent, albeit superhuman swordfights.
Comedy: Dragon Half, Ranma movies. Hard to describe, you just simply have to watch.
Mecha stuff: Neon Genesis Evangelion and Macross Plus. The former has an extremely unusual storyline which is rather disturbing, the latter is a superb fusion of traditional anime and computer graphics.
Love stories: Oh My Goddess. Really sweet with a good helping of comedy. Tenchi Muyo and Fushigi Yuugi are also fine additions.
Classics: Akira. A milestone for its era. Can't really get the story though, despite having watched it around 4 times.

Series
1.) Gundam Wing
-Storyline is solid from beginning middle to end. Unique way of doing the recap episodes, getting points of view from opposite spectrums of war.
2.) Rurouni Kenshin
-Fillers aside, it's blend of history , action and interesting characters made it stand out.
3.) NGE
-Although confusing and depressing, it was such a philosophical show(which i like).
Movies
1.) Endless Waltz Special Edition(enough said)
OVA's
1.) Romance of A Meiji Swordsman
-The darker side of RK. I liked how they showed to us how Kenshin became what he is today....

Another anime movie that I haven't seen mentioned: "Whispers of the Heart: If you Listen Closely" or something, don't remember the exact title. The Best Jap-Anime that I have watched so far would be this movie called Tomari no Totoro--in English, it's called "My Neighbor Totoro". This story is set during the 1940's. Two girls and their dad stay in this summer house and wait for their mom get well in the hospital. Their garden has spirits dwelling in them, which help the plants grow. The biggest one of all is named Totoro. Anyway, you guys should rent it on video. The animation is superb, the scenery is beautiful--especially the wind blowing on the grass. The story is cute and funny. The music is melodic and beautiful. A must see for all. :D
When I was in 1st year highschool, I used to live in Osaka, Japan, so I was spoiled with all the Japanese Anime. My most fave TV show/anime was this story called: "Orange Road"--they show it on the Star Channel in the Philippines, kaso lang it's in Chinese. It's a story of this boy who has the power to teleport. He has 2 sisters who are gifted as well. One has telekinesis and one can freeze time. The guy is sort of in a love triangle. There's this petite, short-haired girl who always clings to him and calls him "Darling", but he is intrigued with the graceful, long and raven-haired girl named Ayukawa. Sayang, never ko na tapos yung series, but the story is really, really good. :D
