No, not me. the title is just to attract pexer to post here. besides, im a guy and im not into modeling.
but my friend thinks and wants to be one.
she had recently quit her office job because she's not interested in working in a typical office.
She had aspired to become a model even she was in college. but unfortunately, no one was there to guide her and to tell her what steps to do.
what are the steps ba to become one?
what are the qualifications?
where can we seek help?
ive read about that post na dapat magta tambay ka sa mall para may makapansin na talent scout and would give you his/her business card , but that is way too frustrating to wait. She wanted to make her own move now.
Ive heard this FTV (fashion tv) phils is seeking for models over the radio 92.3. She plans to submit pictures though.
Please help.

If you're watching cable, they have this fashion TV over channel 37 (ahh, that's in our local cable provider), but that is international.
However, they intend to have a local fashion TV here in the phils.
i read a newspaper column at inquirer they're making a "soft" air at channel 5 hosted by 2 local artists.
over 92.3 Joey's rhythms, ive heard this commercial of FTV "casting search". The requirements are at least 5'5" for girls and 5'10" for guys.
they need 2 pcs 4x6 close up and 1 pc. 4x6 whole body.

This is the first time i've heard about the FTV fashion model search, but to be honest, I kinda get the impression that it isn't any better than standing around in a mall waiting for a fashion scout to come up to you and offer you a contract, those things are simply too chancy...
if you're friend is serious, which i get the impression from you that she is, i suggest she get a portfolio of herself made, a very good portfolio which she can take on 'go-sees' with different agencies. The catch is that good portfolio's take good money, but if you approach the reputable modeling agencies, they would most probably tell you to go and get one of yourself made anyway so it's a necessity if you want to make a career out of modeling...
i hope this helps a little bit...

Ok, i got it. below is the email i got from FTV phils.
ok na sana ang kanilang casting search, but the problem is
mayrong 50,000 pesos na hinihingi.
lahat ba ng modeling agency eh ganito? why do they need that sum of money? tsk. tsk.
i don't think that amount of money is justifiable for just 1 -1/2 minute exposure to TV.
well, what do you think???

The participant will be charged a FIFTY THOUSAND PESOS (PhP50,000) Service Fee for this package. This amount can be seen as a career investment. The exposure and media values alone are certainly worth more than what that price indicates. Think of it as a commercial for yourself that you can present not only to friends and family but to modeling and advertising agencies as well which can land you future contracts! The association with a powerful brand like FashionTV is priceless.
*PROMO* : Our first 100 applicants automatically receive a 50% (P25,000) discount on their service fee!
HOW IT WORKS:
1) Round 1: Pre-selection Stage. Our FTV team will be screening all applications. Pre-selected applicants will be scheduled for an interview.
2) Round 2: Interview Stage. Our FTV team will do a round of interviews with the pre-selected applicants to choose those that can be “FTV material”. The lucky few will be the participants for FTV’s casting segment.
3) Round 3: Contract Signing. The selected participants will return to our office to sign a one-year non-exclusive contract with FTV. FTV requires a P25,000 advance payment upon signing of this contract. We will also schedule you for your workshop, photo shoot and filming of your video clip for the casting segment on FTV.
4) The fun begins… You attend your workshops, photo shoots and filming sessions. You may even get the chance to attend special FTV events! During this period, you should settle the balance and pay any remainder of the service fee with FTV.
5) Watch your segment on FTV! After clearing all fees with FTV, your segment is ready to go. Depending on the number of participants, we will let you know the airing date of your TV appearance so you can tell all your family, friends, coworkers and everyone else about it!
6) Vote and Win! Viewers of FTV will get a chance to vote on their favorite Casting Participants each week and each month. It could be YOU! Monthly winners will automatically earn a spot at the “FTV Philippines Model Search”, slated for November 2002.
7) Get your kit… you’re good to go! After your segment has aired, FTV will give you a promotional kit that includes your pictures and a video copy of your segment as well as available footage of you during your workshop, photo shoots, filming sessions, or other events. We highly encourage our talents to go out there and use these materials to kick-start their careers by showing them to modeling and advertising agencies. Remember to indicate in your resume: “Appeared on a casting segment for FashionTV”.
If you have any other questions, just let me know. Our team will be glad to help you.
Sincerely,
Candy Reyes, FTV Marketing Manager

imho, it doesn't sound worth the fifty k, u can probably get more out of doing individual rounds... sort-off checking out the different modeling agencies, if they like what they see, some will even make u a portfolio for free.... provided you haven't had one made yet....

So far, haven't heard yet of an agency who ask for money.. that's the first. 50K ? quite high and they didn't give any guarantee that she'll have a modelling career afterwards.

Tell your friend, if she wants to become a model, she better stop eating! Do you know that models are POOR HUNGRY individuals?
But seriously,
Its hard to become a model.
The intrigues.
The other *****y models (they will pull you down).
Vanity.
Good money but heck, no friends!
Im just too tired to explain it all. I'll go back to this thread soon.

yeah, ive heard about it little witch.
i had this former textmate who admitted herself
to be solenn heusaff (model of pop cola "the kaunting
bawas, kaunting dagdag" girl)
anyway, i had no solid proof that she was really solenn
heusaff, but anyway, that's another story.
the story is that, before she got mad at me,
she told me about the "dark side of models"
in her exact words, she told me " hey, if you only
knew the other side of our work, MODELS are also
*******, you know"..
i find it hard to believe, though,
but considering the lifestyle of models, what factors
can be considered to be the "dark side of their work" ?
i recently visited calcarrie international website.
one premiere modeling agency here in makati.
the online application asks there :
1. are you willing to go nude? (yes / no)
whoa! wait a minute.! tsk tsk.

Nope, I didn't go for it. The agent is still textin me right now and askin for my portfolio.. nyways, what I know is after I submit my portfolio, they will shoot a VTR (for commercials) , no need to pay a single cent.. but the portfolio, I have to invest on it. Heck, I don't have the "HEIGHT" to be a super model :D .
If you're interested to know the agency, just pm me.. i'll give you the info. :)

First of all, be wary of model searches - especially the ones that ask for money. Those don't guarantee you any jobs afterwards.
Tell your friend to have a good picture of her taken.. various headshots and full (body) shots. It would be best if she doesn't look too made up in the pic. :)
Next, she has to "shop" herself around. Hanging out at malls wouldn't do her any good because it's just one of those "right time, right place moments." I mean, who knew when would be the right time, right? :D Ok.. I'm rambling now.
Moving on... she has to visit various agencies for VTRs. Some agencies don't require appointments, but it's best if she calls up first because some are just open in the afternoons. Once she's there, she'll just ask for a VTR.. then she'll have to fill out a form (provided by the agency), give out her pics (some would just ask 1 headshot and 1 fullshot).
Tell your friend to let her mirror be her bestfriend. Doing VTRs can be so stupid sometimes. It makes you feel awkward. So it needs a special skill to appear NOT stupid and awkward. So she needs to practice infront of her mirror. :p
For VTRs, she should be prepared to smile in front of the camera, say her name, height, age, previous modeling gigs (if any), and they sometimes ask for your hobbies. Then, she has to turn to her right and slowly face the camera then smile.. She'll do this again starting from her left side.. Then she'll do this turning and smiling thing again without smiling or smiling w/ or w/out showing her teeth. Annoying huh? After that, she'll wait if she gets contacted by the agents for another VTR for a project (go-see).
Now.. for go-sees (model speak for auditions).. she'll do the standard thing for the VTR.. you know, the whole twirling and smiling thing. BUT THIS time, casters will ask her to act. It depends for which product she's auditioning for. For instance, if it's for a softdrink commercial, she needs to act out that she's drinking something.. stuff like that.
Portfolios come afterward.. They are mondo expensive so it's best to save up for that once she's more settled in the modeling world. :beam:
Good luck to your friend!

Hey! Yep, of course I still remember you cyberredz. :D
Hmm.. that model search is really something huh? 50K :wow: Are they for real?! Gawd, at that money, the contestants/candidates should have their very own billboard along EDSA! Ok.. was just exaggerating for some dramatic effect.
Anyway, your friend can go to Cal Carrie's. They have a training division there apart from the modeling agency per se. They are not paying me to plug this ok? But seriously, they have people there who can tell you if you have what it takes to make it in the business. They don't have VTRs, but your friend can still check the agency out. Who knows.. she might have the "bankable" face/body value they are looking for. Oh.. she might be talked into joining the training workshops - which comes at a price of course (but it's considerably cheaper than John Robert Powers). It's helpful really. Half, if not, all the models of Carrie's go through the workshops. Here's the addy...
Cal Carries International Models Philippines
Suite 1514 Herrera Towers
98 Herrera St. Salcedo Village, Makati
Tel #: 844-0350
While she's there, she can pass by at the 6th (or was it 7th) floor of the same building. There's a casting agency there called Don Management. She can ask the guard at the lobby for the exact unit number. Tell her to bring her pictures. :)
And while she's in the same area, she can go to Xpose. (their more famous talents are Amanda Griffin, Tessa Nieto, Nichole Schulze, etc.)
Xpose
3/F Centrum II Building
150 Valero St., Salcedo Village, Makati
Tel #: 893-7946 (I think it's this agency that holds VTRs on afternoons.. better call to check).

Yup, totally right. :D Advertising agencies, casting agencies, modeling agencies are 3 separate, um, entities(?). Freelance talent scouts/agents are different too.
Here's the deal.. The client (like for instance, Sprite) will ask an advertising agency to do the ad for them. Now, advertising agencies will hook up with casting agencies to, obviously, cast the talents for the commercial/print ad. (However, most advertising agencies do have casters already). Then, casting agencies will let modeling agencies and freelance talent agencies/scouts know about a go-see for the models. However, models and agents wouldn't know which product they are auditioning for until they get the part. They will just be told that they are going for a go-see for a softdrink commercial. (Or phone company if it's going to be an ad for Globe or something like that).
Out of a hundred models pinning for a spot in that ad, casters will pick like (for example) 5 of the best models who auditioned. This is what you call a "call back." a/k/a The 2nd round of go-see. And, once you're given the story board AND contract, that's when you're sure you got the part already. :)
Oh.. and there's a 30% cut for your talent agent (the one who referred you to that go-see) if you get the project. If you have a talent agent for a particular project, it doesn't mean you're exclusively tied to him/her, unless you signed on to an exclusive contract. You can have 1 talent agent for this go-see, and another agent for a different go-see, and so on. And that's what makes you a freelance model. :beam:

well, thanks for all who posted here. starfish07, kerwin, especially wittygurl and juniper.
we'll go check-out the agency. but as to what ive said to wittygurl, its not a solid plan yet. we're just exploring the possibilites if she really can do the modeling.
i still can't believe that FTV phils who asks for 50 thousand bucks para lang maka appear ka sa TV for just 1.5 minutes.
hmm, makasali na lang sa game ka na ba, baka manalo pa ako ng 1.6 million.

http://aa-super-images.reform.com/brunetteangel.gif I just read that thing about 50K. It was awfully long, so I didn't exactly read it the first time. :D So the 50K is for the entire package for the workshops and portfolio PALA. Dang...
Actually, I think that's fine already. Seriously! :beam: You only have to fork 50K when you're accepted right? I thought you have to pay 50K to join. :bonkself:
Here's why I think that's a good deal already...
1) Workshops (which u can do w/out really, but it can be helpful)
- like John Robert Powers, they can charge as high as 100K depending on which level you are in.
2) Portfolio & Composite Cards
- A good portfolio can cost around P60,000-P70,000. Of course, provided that your photographers are Raymund Issac, Jun de Leon, and the like. They charge really high for portfolio shoots.
- Like Cal Carrie's, their composite cards are still being printed in Hong Kong for a hundred pieces. They would cost around P25,000. (Composite cards the once you give out to different agencies. They contain different pictures of you in a single piece of card, your contact info, and vitals).
The logic behind this HUGE amount of investment on the model's part is that once they get to score a major deal (like P1M for a particular ad), then eventually, your 50K investment would be paid off.
So... bottomline, again, it's best to invest on a portfolio when you're more settled in the business. At least by then, you'd know the ropes involved so to speak. :)
