that metro manila list looks like it was prepared by a typical PEXer. mapua and UP-Manila should be in that list, along with adamson university. sh_t, adamson's facilities are lot more modern than those of UP-Diliman!

MSU-IIT can put most of the schools in this list to shame. (at least when science is concerned)

BPI’s 2002 Science awardees
Once again, 10 universities all over the Philippines have named their respective outstanding science students. These winning young men and women are the Bank of the Philippine Island’s idea of role models. These are individuals whose efforts made them excel in specialized fields of science such as mathematics, physics, engineering, chemistry, biology, and computer science. The awardees are recognized for their potential contributions to industry and nation-building, and are selected on the basis of their academic performance and nomination from the school.
The BPI Science Awards go to the top three junior and senior students of the following: Ateneo de Davao University, Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, Silliman University, St. Louis University, University of the Philippines (Diliman and Los Baños), University of San Carlos, University of Santo Tomas, and Xavier University.
For BPI, science, research and technology development are essential components in nation-building. This year’s batch of winners are making inroads in their respective fields, pushing advances and pursuing diverse researches that will benefit the society. Their concerns range from environmental wellness to home improvement.
Majority of the 2002 BPI Science Awards winners zeroed in on addressing environmental issues. Ateneo de Davao’s Christopher Jabonero (BS Civil Engineering) accomplished the project “A Drainage System Assessment of Purok 18-21, Bgy. 76-A, Davao City” which aims to help restore the drainage system of the dying Davao River. His schoolmate Ana Karenina Pahimalan (BS Chemical Engineering) did “The San Miguel Davao Brewery: An Assessment of their Environmental Management System” which attemps to find out whether the existing procedures within the Davao Brewery have a significant impact on the environment.
De La Salle’s Richard Abalos (BS Chemical Engineering) finished the thesis “Absorption-Catalytic Oxidation of VOCs on Metal Oxides Supported on Activated Carbon.” Abalos explains, “Environmental catalysis is a relatively new field. I like to experience developing catalysis that have potential applications to the control of air pollution.” His fellow Lasallian, Tanglaw Roman (BS Physics) achieved “Fluorescence Characteristics of Pyrodinium Bahamense var Compressum Determined by Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) Technique. Roman says, “This project aims to achieve a remote-sensing LIDAR system wherein the laser can be used onsite to determine if red tide will occur.”
From Silliman, Jeffrey Joseph Araula (BS Biology) and Raymund Vincent Pinero (BS Physics) submitted “A Comparative Study of the Effectivity of Azadirachta excelsa Oil Extracts as Botanical Pesticide and Commercial Pesticide on Guava Aphids” and “An Experimental Determination of the Sound Absorption Coefficient of Some Local Materials with the Use of Locally-Constructed Taylor Tube.” Araula wanted to make more affordable and environment-friendly botanical pesticide while Pinero aimed to minimize noise pollution through materials with high absorption coefficient.
From Baguio City’s St. Louis, Michael Agustin’s (BS Biology) “Prevalent Fungi Affecting Vegetable Crops and Fruit Trees in Baguio and La Trinidad” was a three-month project that involved the observation of fungal infections that plague crops. Alexander Safran (BS Chemical Engineering) came up with a study of the effect of treated factory wastewater on surgarcane growth, tiller production and sucrose content.
UPLB’s Mariefel Valenzuela (BS Chemical Engineering) finished the project “Evaluation of Handsheet Optical Properties Made Using Flocculated Paper Mill White Water” which concerns water recycling. Valenzuela remarks. “The large freshwater consumption of the pulp industry has a huge environmental impact.”
For San Carlos’ Annely Jane Celecia (BS Biology), she researched on finding alternative solutions against plant pests with less or zero impact to the environment. Karl Owen Suan (BS Marine Biology) pursued the incidence of imposex in mollusks around Mactan Island. His study tried to find affordable indicators for pollution.
Another field where the 2002 BPI Science Awards winners ventured into is information. This is true with Ateneo de Davao’s Mary Glen (BS Computer Science) who took up “Enhancing the Security Features of Sendmail Using Encryption / Decryption Technology.” She says, “Information is a critical business asset and must be protected.”
Adrian Serohijos (BS Physics) of Ateneo de Manila chose to research on the “Spectral Analysis of Infrared Semiconductor Lasers for Free Space Signal Transmission.” On the good of his research, he says, “The system will provide key players in national economic development a forum wherein ideas can be exchanged quickly.”
For De la Salle’s Joel Panugayan (BS ECE), his project aims to create a device which will allow people to make voice calls in a local area data network.
St. Louie’s Rhowella Macay “Document Imaging System” which focuses on archiving documents for her school’s Registrars Office.
Also finishing a school-based project in Xavier’s Noel Saracanlao, who finished the thesis “Xavier University Syllabi Manager,” which allows teachers to create, edit and delete a syllabus online.
UST’s Math major John Paul Lorredo applied his know-how to complete “An Analysis of the Mortality Rates Among Individuals Living in the Rural and Urban Areas in the Philippines” while UPLB’s Jericho Bautista, an Applied Math major, carried out the project “Quantification of Crop Mortality Associated with Tropical Typhoons.”
There are also recipients who pursued to improve daily living through science, such as Silliman’s Vanessa Alpeche (BS Electrical Engineering) who designed an automatic doorbell which works without pressing a button. The doorbell will sound off if someone stands in front of it. With UP Diliman’s Marko Arciaga (BS Applied Physics), he touched on coating punching and cutting tools with titanium carbonitride to increase the cutting lifetime of the said tools.
UST’s Brian Go, a Chemical Engineering major, took a rather different path, working on food research in “Extraction of Juice from the Philippine Mango Pulp Using Thermophilic Pectinase Enzyme.”
San Carlos’ Emily Gobok (BS Industrial Engineering) took on “A Feasibility Study on a Toll-Packing Company.” Gobok says, “This is to determine the feasibility of establishing a packing service company which shall cater to select industries in Metro Cebu.”
Applications are the order of the day for AdMU’s John Mathew Ng (BS Computer Science) with his project “Parallelizing Exponential-Space Algorithms,” UP Diliman’s Ericson Chua (BS Computer Engineering) with his “Real World Image Segmentation Using Color and Stereo” and Karen Kate David (BS Molecular Biology and Biotechnology) and her “Molecular Basis of Behavioral Differences Between Albino and Pigmented Mice,” and UST’s Francis Castro (BS Mechanical Engineering) and his project “Integration of Microsoft Access to Spur Gear Analysis and Design.”
UPLB’s Rosa Paula Cuevas (BS Biology) tried to produce in her research the substance called tylosic, a cheap alternative for the cure of chickens with stomach aches and diarrhea.
Xavier’s Rey Lumayon (BS Biology) tried to find a possible treatment for cancer through the chemical called holothurin, found in sea cucumbers. AdMU’s Paul Dominic Olinares worked on isolating a protein that is potential drug for tumor detection of breast cancer.
