I saw this one just today in one of the stalls in Glorietta. I'm wondering if this is a good buy because I'm looking for a cheap but quality CD Writers. Your advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Personally, I'd add another 650 pesos and get me a 16x/12x/32x Cyberdrive burner. They're available at PC Express (http://www.pcx.com.ph) and Rising Sun (http://www.rsuncomputers.com) if I recall correctly.

Opt for a 16x/10x/32x drive for a few hundred more.

Or better, a 32x/12x/40x Asus CDRW drive for 4800.

Gatcho AH ganun ba?! Akala ko kasi medyo ayos pa yung speed-to-price ratio na yun. Di pala....

Eh ano ba yung "burnproof" na nababasa ko?! Ano ba nagagawa nun?

Question: Can anybody recommend a good external (USB) CD writer, and where to buy it?

I use a laptop mainly (with no Firewire/IEEE 1394 interface) so I'm stuck with USB. Say, budget in the P5K-P8K.

Will be used mainly for backup and the occasional burning of an audio CD, so, top-notch speeds (16/20/32x) isn't much of a consideration -- but burn-proof technology might be, and compatibility & bundled software.

raven23, there's a Lite-On 24x/10x/40x external writer available at PCX that makes use of USB 2.0. It's got burn-proof as well. Unfortunately, it retails for 9,200 pesos...There are a lot more available at Villman's site (http://www.villman.com/products/product_list.asp?catid=cdrw&prodname=CD-RW+Drives), but they're a little higher up the price range.

Buffer under-run protection. It means that if you're doing a lot of tasks like opening Photoshop, copying files between two harddrives etc, you won't end up with a coaster. The technology comes under various names such as SmartBURN, Exaclink, JustLink etc, but the basic principle is the same: when there is no longer enough data in the buffer, the writing process is paused, and continues only when it has been filled once again. Some drive manufacturers go through the extent of giving their drives a larger buffer such as in the case of Yamaha's offerings (8MB as opposed to the 2MB found in most drives).

P9,200? Will check it out, then. Will also have to see if it's available and cheaper in the States. :)
