Has Princess Mononoke been shown here already? I hope I didn't miss it in the theaters! I just got Castle of Cagliostro on DVD and loved it -- hilarious & cleverly paced, even better than most of the action/adventure stuff out there like the Bond movies. Actually, parang The Saint (thief kasi) but far superior. Hard to believe it was produced in 1979, it hardly shows its age -- probably because of the all-new dub, which for once, is actually better than the subtitles.

The DVD of Princess Mononoke is due to be released next month, but there's an online petition against Buena Vista's decision to release it only with the English dub, and not the Japanese dub. To those who've seen Princess Mononoke, how's the English dub? I hear it's pretty good, after all, the one on Cagliostro was quite satisfactory. But still, having the option to view Mononoke in its original Japanese version would have been a plus.

Princess Mononoke rules!! I've seen the english subtitled version. I think it's better that way, but with Neil Gaiman writing the English script, it's bound to be good! I want to see the english version myself! :D :D :D

Mononoke is a great film, animated or not.

The sheer detail and artistry, the ruthlessly rigorous storytelling, the unbelievable imagination--a wolf with two tails, a sprite with a rattling head, a forest god with endless antlers and a startlingly human face--Miyazaki's genius for creature design shines through.

The characterization--all of them, human or not, give better performances than practically all Hollywood performers I've seen in recent years.

And the animation--better than in Spriggan, Akira, Wings of Honneamise, Ghost in a Shell. Remember, these films show machines and a high tech future; Mononoke shows nature and ordinary people, a far more difficult challenge. It's easier to draw a tank or robot than it is to draw a deer, a waterfall, a gust of wind.

If there's a fault to Mononoke it's that it isn't as emotionally intense as, say, Miyazaki's earlier works, Laputa, or Nausicaa. But that's quibbling about it's pefection, not complaining about its flaws.
Some say Miyazaki is the Japanese Disney. I think this is an insult. Miyazaki is an incomparably greater artist than Disney.

"The Princess Mononoke" hasn't been shown in Philippine cinemas yet. Fortunately for The Rock, he already borrowed a copy on VHS. ;) It is truly an anime on the grand and epic scale. This would probably not have been made if it were live action because it would be near impossible to produce and the ffects would cost billions. That's why it belongs in the perfect realm of anime. :D

As Noel Vera already said, it lives up to the tradition of Miyazaki's earlier work like "Laputa, Castle in the Sky" for it's grand scale and rich texture and storytelling. The Rock can't comment on "Nausicaa, Warriors of the Wind" since he hasn't seen it yet, but he's getting around to it. The stampede of the boars, the arousal of the Nightwalker, and the attack of Princess Son were all breathtaking feats of animation. http://www.pinoyexchange.com/smokin.gif The Rock presently has a Japanese classmate in grad school and even she told me that in Japan, Miyazaki-san is a legend whose films are always awaited. Clearly, he has not disappointed with "Mononoke Hime".

If you smell what The Rock is cookin!

The Rock -- is the video of Mononoke readily available or am I going to have to scour Manila for a viewing? I've been waiting for it to come out in theaters since late last year... what are the chances that this reputedly fantastic feat in anime is going to skip the big screen and go straight to video?

I hear it will be in theaters in October.

No promises. But you've been warned.

Yup, baka matagalan pa bago mo makita ito sa big screen. :( The Rock borrowed a tape from his usual source right outside Xavier School in San Juan. :D It's dubbed in English and it's not the clearest copy, but it does justice to the piece.

Mononoke Hime is kewl! Good story although nalabuan ako at first kasi Japanese version ang napanood ko.

I'd hate to see the English version, especially if the voice actress of Princess Mononoke is Clare Danes.

I saw mononokehime before..

Actually I saw it in Japan in the Original japanese dub. All I can say is, it is spectacularly beautiful!

A point of note, Miyazaki himself once admitted that he modeled his artwork on Disney. But he outgrew the mold that he himself created and so we have the stunning artwork of the master himself.

the english-dubbed was okay... these are the artists that i remembered who "lent" their voices for the movie

Claire Danes --- Mononoke
Billy Cudrup --- Ashitaka
Minnie Driver --- i forgot the character's name... sya yung nagli-lead don sa mga taong gumagawa ng weapons??

I liked Minnie Driver's voice here, pero minsan mahina yung boses nya kaya medyo kelangan makinig ka ng husto so you could understand what she's saying...

yung iba, nakalimutan ko...

i agree with Noel Vera, there's no comparison between Miyazaki and Disney... Miyazaki's works have so much depth and very detailed...

But it is indeed a delicious irony:
A point of note, Miyazaki himself once admitted that he modeled his artwork on Disney. But he outgrew the mold that he himself created and so we have the stunning artwork of the master himself.
